U.S. Bank Tower vs the New Guy

U.S. Bank Tower vs the New Guy

April 2018 · 3 min read · Los Angeles

I've been wanting to post this photo for a few months and don't believe I have yet, so I'll use this as my opportiunity. Here is my entry to @killerwhale's #killerpix weekly contest. This week's theme is OPPOSITES. I'm not sure if this photo matches that or not, but I feel like it does and the theme isn't too specific and thus open for interpretation. To me this represents the opposition of old vs new.

This photo was taken February 8, 2018 from the 46th Floor of the Gas Company Tower in Los Angeles, CA. As I've stated in other posts before, one of the perks of working in the film industry are all the amazing locations I find myself working in.

In frame to the left is the majestic U.S. Bank Tower. Finished in 1989, it's been the tallest building in Los Angeles standing proud at 1,018-feet (310.3 m) with 73 stories above ground. This building has been a staple of the Los Angeles Skyline for almost 30 years. At night you can see it's beautifully lit crown top, which is normally white (as it is pictured below), but every so often they'll switch up the colors. For example: during the holidays it's red and green. It's modest but beautiful. Not flashy and obnoxious.

To it's right in the reflection down at the bottom of frame is the "new guy" in town. This is the Wilshire Grand Center building. After demolishing the historic Wilshire Grand Hotel that was built in 1952 this monster took it's place. Finished in September 2016 standing at 1,100 feet (335.3 m) also with 73 stories, it became the new tallest building in Los Angeles....notice the tall antenna at the top. The building is owned by Korean Air, which is why you see the logo blaring bright. It rotates out with the Intercontinental Hotel logo as the building is part hotel, part shopping center, part office spaces. That light is obnoxiously bright at night. By far the brightest in the city and in my opinion it's too much. I've heard rumor that this building is the first of many to be implemented with bright LED lights. It's part of a new planned light and sign district similar to Times Square in New York...There should be a limit to the brightness and the light pollution. I hope it doesn't happen, but seeing how quickly this city has been growing and building in just the 10 years I've lived in it, the odds are not looking good. Here's a link to a post I did a few months back with before and after photos of the skyline within the part 2 years. https://steemit.com/architecturalphotography/@alevaskye/rapid-growth-of-a-city

The perspective of this photo is how I see it. In my mind, the US Bank Tower is still superior and grand next to the small little annoyance coming to change and take over. Change is inevitable. Get ready it's coming with a bulldozer. If you couldn't tell, I'm not a fan.
