A new path from temple to temple in Kostroma

June 2020 · 4 min read · Kostroma

Walk along the Kostroma river.

Last night we went for a walk around the city. We decided that we should change our favorite route. We decided to go a greater distance, but to new places. The beginning of a new journey was from the inspection of the Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands on Zaprudn.

The temple is located on the banks of a small river called Zaprudnya. Although there is another name. According to another version, the river is called Belilka. From the word bleach. The fact is that there was flax production on the banks of this river, and a bleaching operation was carried out in the waters of this river.

But the history of this temple is more interesting.

As usual, first on the site of today's temple the first one was built - wooden. It was in the 13th century. The reason that the temple was founded in this place was the iconic appearance on this place. This is our most famous local icon, the Fedorov Icon of the Mother of God.

Prince Vasily Yaroslavovich found the icon. He was the brother of the well-known Prince Alexander Nevsky.

Due to the acquisition of this icon, a monastery was founded in that place and the first wooden church of the Savior was laid on the territory of the monastery.

A stone temple appeared on this site in the XVIII century. Later, a theological seminary was organized on the territory of the monastery.

Natives of this educational institution were many famous people of the Kostroma region.

In the middle of the XVIII century the monastery was abolished and turned into a parish church.

The church had many problems during the Soviet period.

We walked past the temple, admired its white walls and went further to the bank of the Kostroma river.

The Kostroma river is quite long and flows far along the Kostroma region. This river flows into the main Russian river Volga. To regulate the water levels in both reservoirs, a dam and a water level regulation system were built at the mouth of the Kostroma River.

We climbed onto this dam and before us a view of the Ipatiev Monastery opened.

From the dam to the Ipatiev Monastery, a beautiful road has been laid, and a path passes along which we walked.

We walked past the boat moorings. This is a collective pier, where ordinary people store their boats. It smells of mud, water, gasoline and adventure. I remember this smell since childhood, when we went fishing with my grandfather.

We came to the same pier, got into the boat, started the engine and sailed along the Volga to the places where you can catch some fish.

Since we crossed the Kostroma river along the dam, we had to return back across the bridge. I made two panoramas from this bridge. On one of them Ipatiev Monastery is visible - one of the main attractions of our city.

On the other - the territory in front of the monastery. This is the so-called settlement.

Here you can also see the domes of churches. One of them is large and stone. This is the Church of St. John the Evangelist. On the left are the domes of the Ipatiev Monastery. In the center are visible wooden dummies of the museum exhibit - the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was brought from the village of Kostroma Kholm Region to the local museum of wooden architecture.

Pleasant walk.

When I approached my house, I looked at how far I went. It turned out that the distance traveled was 17 kilometers. No wonder I rubbed the corns. But that doesn't scare me. A good walk is worth knocking your legs down a bit.
