Old Russian village

Old Russian village

December 2020 · 2 min read · Yaroslavl Oblast

Not far from Yaroslavl

Winter walks in the vicinity of my habitat.

Not far from the city of Yaroslavl there is a village called Vyatskoye. This is an old village located on the trade road from Yaroslavl to Vologda. The location of this village provided good trade and quick enrichment. The peasants from this village turned into merchants. Today you can visit the house-museums of peasant families who were engaged in trade and agriculture.

Today, the government of the Yaroslavl region spends no small effort to return this village to its former kind of prosperity. There are hotels, museums and infrastructure for tourism.

I wanted to see this place for myself and one winter day we got into the car and went on a short trip. You can drive from Kostroma to the village in two hours. This is not a lot.

Winter is not a very convenient time for travel, as it gets dark quickly, and if you start closer to lunchtime, you run the risk of meeting an order at the place of travel. So, you have to go back in the dark.

But that never stopped us.

The village of Vyatskoye turned out to be a really interesting place. Here is a temple on a hill, here is a river.

There are old baths along the river, which were heated in black. These are the objects of the local museum.

There are many brick houses in the village. For such a large-scale construction, a lot of bricks were needed and this demand was satisfied through the construction of several small brick factories in the village.

Thus, this village turned into something more than just a village. It was already a small town.

Of course, the proximity of Yaroslavl, a large urban center, did not allow the village to become a city. But the village has acquired a very pleasant respectable look.

The village also had bad times. Trade importance declined towards the end of the 19th century. In the 20th century, this village lost its significance and former gloss.

Today everything is returning and I hope that I will see the village of Vyatskoye in its former splendor.
