Temples of Gorokhovets

Climbing the mountain to the walls of Trinity Cathedral

Continuation of the history of visiting the city of Gorokhovets.

As I wrote earlier, we walked from the city center to the Klyazma River. It is only a few hundred meters. Beautiful views of the city were so attractive that we immediately wanted to be on the highest mountain of this city in order to view everything from above.

And while we go up to the beautiful church of the Trinity Cathedral whitening on a green hill, I want to talk about the churches and temples that are in Gorokhovets.

Let's start with the Holy Trinity Nicholas Monastery, which is located on Puzhalova Gora. The center of this monastery is the Trinity Cathedral, to which we go. This cathedral was built with private donations from a merchant. The last name of the merchant was Sapozhnikov. He gave money to build a stone temple in exchange for a burnt wooden one.

Climbing Mount Puzhuy to the Trinity Cathedral, another monastery became clearly visible. This is the Znamensky Convent. This monastery is located on the other side of the Klyazma River. The monastery was founded in the 16th century. At first, all the buildings were wooden, but with the help of merchants-patrons in the late 18th century stone buildings were built.

While we were walking through the city center, we could observe the Sretensky Monastery. So, on the heel with a diameter of one kilometer there are three monasteries at once. All of them are ancient and interesting in terms of history and architecture.

But the list for inspection does not end there. The main object in the city center of Gorokhovets is the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Built in the 17th century at the expense of the family of merchants Ershov. The monumental cathedral is the highest in the city. Above it is only the bell tower, which is located next to this cathedral. The height of the bell tower is 37 meters.

Climbing Mount Puzhuy we passed another temple. This is the church of the Resurrection.

Even in the city there is a temple of All Saints next to the cemetery. But this is a relatively new building of the early XX century.

In addition to the churches that are in the monasteries at the entrance to the city from the side of the large road from Nizhny Novgorod to Vladimir, there is also the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. This cathedral was built at the very beginning of the 18th century.

In a word, a small city is simply saturated with spiritual power. Monasteries and churches adorn these hills, creating a unique spiritual warmth. This is not to say anything about museums and other interesting architectural buildings.

And it is not surprising that this city has turned into a tourist center, where a very large number of tourists come every year. The status of Gorokhovets as a valuable object of historical and cultural heritage was noted even by the international organization of UNESCO. In 2017, UNESCO included the entire historical center of Gorokhovets in the list of historical heritage.

I hope this status will allow the city to attract more money in order to maintain its facilities for new tourists. I will definitely come again to Gorokhovets to take a walk along these hills and look at the bends of the Klyazma river.
