The ancient city of Delphi

The ancient city of Delphi

A visit to modern Delphi

As you remember, we drove through the Parnassus massif, where, according to legend, there was a monastery of the god Apollo and a dwelling of muses that inspired artists and poets.

Since I had never been to these places before, I did not know where exactly the ancient Delphian city was located. I simply entered the city name "Delphi" in the navigator and followed the instructions of the computer.

And now I’m passing the sign that says “Delphi”. I look around and see the beauty of the local nature. From the side of the mountain you can see the sea. Somewhere on the shore there is the city of Itea. There is a valley between the sea and me. The mountains border the valley. All this is very beautiful and impressive.

Somewhere here the ancient city of Delphi should be excavated. Before setting off to look for this city and maybe a museum, we decided to first explore the modern city with the same name.

The modern city of Delphi is not at all big. Less than one thousand people live in it. The city was built near the ruins of the ancient city of Delphi. The city was built instead of a small village, which was located directly on the site of ancient temples.

Excavations began on this site in 1891. These excavations were carried out by French archaeologists with the permission of the Greek authorities. Because of these excavations, it was necessary to demolish the village and build a new city.

On the streets of this new Delphi, we walked, looking at the blue in the distance Corinthian Gulf. The small town itself was really small. Just a couple of streets running along the side of the mountain and several small streets that crossed these streets across. But there is a beautiful temple. Near the temple is the main square of the city. Here is the post office, government, police.

In a word, everything is cozy and neat.

By the way, the main street passes through the city, which leads to the Museum of Antiquity of Delphi and further to the excavations of the ancient city.

While we walked along the streets of modern Delphi, I smelled a lot of pleasant smells and pleasant places like an outdoor cafe, where the tables were right on the city stairs.
