The real Greece. The city of Ioannina.

May 2020 · 3 min read · Ioannina

City on the lake

Moving to the north of Greece, we visited the city of Arta and examined the historic bridge. I wrote about this in my previous post. Next, we continued heading north.

I marked on the map the goal - the city of Ioannina on the lake of the same name. A city on the shore of a mountain lake - what could be more interesting?

We arrived in this small town and found a parking place. We decided to walk and look around. To eat, we went to a small cafe. They made a local branded cheese pie, which is similar to Italian pizza, though the dough is completely different.

This area is famous for its pies. They are cooked with different fillings - sweet and onion, stuffed with pumpkin and cheese.

A colorful Greek wrapped us two pieces of this pie in paper and we went to explore the local sights.

Ioannina is a very beautiful and picturesque city, combining historical memories with the reality of a modern metropolis. Located at an altitude of 480 m., On the western shore of a large lake, it is an important commercial, transport and cultural center of northwestern Greece, as well as the capital of Epirus County.

One of the main attractions of this amazing and mysterious city is a small island located in the middle of the lake, which is currently inhabited. Here is the famous monastery of St. Panteleimon, where the legendary Ali Pasha was hiding and killed in 1822.

Nowadays, Ioannina is a rapidly developing city of students and the military, famous throughout Greece for its feta cheese and mineral water Zagori, as well as silver jewelry, shops with which can be found on the main street.

We went to the shore of the lake and with pleasure felt a cool breeze from the water on a hot day.

We decided to stay for the night somewhere in the area. Studying hotel booking sites has given us the understanding that cheaper accommodation options are located in the suburbs.

A small settlement called Perama was located a few kilometers from the center of Ioannina.

We went there. It turned out to be a very cozy village. We found a place to sleep and went for a walk. On the main street of the village of Perama, we found a large number of jewelry shops. We went into one of them. The owner worked there. He allowed me to take some photographs of himself and his employee.

That was interesting.

In addition, this village has a large cave. This is one of the main local attractions. Quite often we went to different caves and once again plunged into the ground this time we did not want to.

We went up to the hill under which this cave is located.

The hill offers a beautiful view of Lake Ioannina, the city and the island in the lake.

The warm sun, mountains, large water and the feeling that everything will be fine.

Ioannina is an amazingly beautiful place. If you will be able to visit this lake - do not hesitate. It's worth it.
