The Temple over the water

The Temple over the water

April 2021 · 2 min read · Vladimir Oblast

Not far from the city of Vladimir, near the village of Bogolyubovo (the residence of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky), there is a pearl of Russian architecture. This is the Church of the Intercession-on-Nerl.

I have come to this temple more than once to admire the beauty of this creation of ancient Russian masters. I have already written about this place several times, but every time I come to this place, I accumulate new emotions that I want to share.

An acquaintance of mine lives next to this temple. He always lets me know how the weather and the state of nature near the temple. The thing is that the temple stands on flooded meadows. In the spring, the rivers Klyazma and Nerl rise and sometimes flood all approaches to the temple.

It turns out that this small graceful church stands among the water. This is an amazing sight, but very short-lived. Therefore, every spring I try to get here and see this miracle.

This time there was a feeling that there must be a lot of water. We hit the road. I wanted to be near the temple at sunrise, but it so happened that the sunrise is very early and we did not have time.

But this time we saw the temple in big flood. Of course, this is not the state when only the temple itself rises above the water. This time it was possible to approach the temple on a dry one, forcing two very large puddles.

By the way, in order to cross these puddles, we applied a clever method. They just had plastic bags on their feet.

As a result, we just walked across the field to the temple and admired the spring nature. It can be noted that we were able to walk only because there is a special road from the temple for transporting various goods and important guests by car.

This road is usually closed and is only opened by the abbot of the temple. The road can be used as a pedestrian road and since it is well above the field level, it remains dry.

A friend of mine from these places says that there are years when this road is covered with water. I still hope that one day I will find myself in these places on such a day.
