Where to go on a summer day from Kostroma for an hour or two

Nerekhta. History of the native land.

Nerekhta is a city near Kostroma.

This is a very small city and if in ancient times it was a promising city in the historical sense, now it is a very small provincial town.

The very word "Nerekhta" from the language of the Meryan tribes that inhabited these places is translated as a river in a lowland and swamp.

Mention of Nerekhta appeared in written sources as early as 1214, but these places received greater significance a little later, in the XIV century.

Then, on the banks of the Solonitsa River, which flows near the city, salt was mined.

For this purpose, wells were dug on the banks of the river and salt solution was collected from the bottom of these wells. Then this solution was evaporated in special wooden houses. These houses beat like furnaces where boilers were installed and water was constantly boiling.

Water evaporated and salt formed at the bottom of the boilers. Salt was a very expensive product, as it could ensure the safety of products for a long time.

Salt was mined and sent directly to Moscow. The fact is that all these places were in the possession of the Moscow princes.

It is known that in 1504 the great Moscow Prince Ivan III bequeathed Nerekht to his son Vasily, and in 1572 Tsar Ivan the Terrible transferred this land to his son Fedor. It turns out that Nerekhta was in the possession of the royal family.

Following Russian history, Nerekhta suffered greatly from the Polish detachments during the Russian unrest.

In 1609, Polish troops captured Nerekhta and burned the city. Many townspeople were killed. This greatly undermined the development of the city. The population did not increase almost 12 years after this event.

It should be noted that before the seizure of the city, local residents gathered a squad of seven thousand wars. Of course, these were just peasants and not professional soldiers. As a result of the battle, the Nerekhta militia was defeated by the superior forces of the Polish search.

With the onset of the 18th century, the city of Nerekhta began to grow. There was a rise in industrial production. The wealth of the inhabitants began to grow.

Of course, the development of industry created difficulties with the intensified exploitation of peasants. It is known that peasants, brought to an extreme degree of indignation by requisitions and their position, even set fire to their enterprises in order not to work and not to endure difficult living conditions.

***

We arrived in this city just to walk along the small streets and look at this corner of the Russian province.

I must say that today in Nerekht there are a lot of architectural monuments that are worth exploring.

Right along the road, at the entrance to the city is a beautiful Epiphany church.

Right behind it stands the Kazan bell tower.

A little further down the street you can see the domes of the Vladimir Church.

If you turn right in front of the Epiphany Church, you will see the Varvara Church.

A small river Nerekhta flows through the city, in the waters of which the domes of temples are reflected.

It's beautiful.

Basically, all the buildings in Nerekhta date back to the beginning of the 18th century or later. The fact is that strong fires often raged in Nerekhta, after which the city had to be rebuilt.

But the spirit of the old city remained and I with pleasure walk through this old city, enjoying the peace and beauty of the old provincial streets.
