3+1 Bogatyrs / 3+1

"Bogatyrs" or "3 Bogatyrs" - a picture of my countryman Victor Vasnetsov. He wrote it for more than 20 years and on April 23, 1898, it was finished.
In the center is Ilya Muromets, on his right Dobrynya Nikitich, and on the left Alyosha Popovich.
About each of them is composed in the Russian people epic, legend. All of them are epic heroes, defenders of the ancient Russian land. But Vasnetsov decided to show them together in one picture. Currently, there is a series of cartoons about these characters, where they get into funny stories, but successfully overcome all difficulties and come out victorious from any trouble that sometimes they themselves create.
The most incredible epic is composed about Ilya Muromets. It is believed that as a child he was crippled and lay on the stove for exactly 33 years. And then the old vagabonds gave him a drink of water and he became a mighty warrior, strongman and went to protect the Russian people from all evil spirits and from external enemies.
About a year ago I realized that in English there is no word "bogatyr". There is a word "strongman", "Hercules", "knight", "warriar" but everything does not reflect the essence of this word. And even I always thought that the "bogatyr" is something ours, originally Russian. But as always - dig into every Russian and you will find a Tartar there. (In the middle ages Russia was 300 years under the yoke of the Mongol-Tatars. But this is a difficult question). In this case we find Mongolian. It turns out this Mongolian word. Hence the word "Batyr", and in Persian "Bahadur".

I found an interesting translation of this word - JOHN HENRY (Negro hero), ie Bogatyr-is Russian JOHN HENRY.

Pictures my daughter did, Oh how it happened. In the photo, almost 4 heroes. Perhaps, guess who the fourth?

And here still Victor Vasnetsov has a picture "The Vityaz at a crossroads". And there, too, painted bogatyr. But why knight (vityaz). I did not see this picture in the hall. It was under restoration.

I think that in the future I will tell more about the paintings that I saw in the Tretyakov gallery
