Nemi - The Lake & The City

Lake Nemi is 35 km South-East of Rome. This is a caldera of volcanic origin. This lake is often mentioned in the pages of ancient history. In particular, the Villa of the Emperor Caligula stood on the Bank of the Nemi, where he was most likely buried. On the high shores of the lake lies the city of the same name, Nemi.
This is the city I visited at the end of December last year. It was a small tour of the surrounding area of Rome. In addition to lake Nemi, we also visited lake Albano.
There is a legend that Caligula built luxury pleasure ships on lake Nemi. There are no written sources about the construction, operation and death of ships, but according to the marking of the found remains of ships, historians attribute them to Caligula.
Starting from the XV century, they were persistently tried to raise to the surface. The lack of modern diving devices allowed divers to raise to the surface only pieces of skin, fragments of ornaments, mosaics, and gold jewelry.
The remains from the bottom of the lake were raised by order of Mussolini in 1927-1932, but in 1944 the Museum where these ships were stored was destroyed by fire.
A small bust of Caligula, modestly located near the corner of a shop selling porchetta, reminds us of all these events in Nemi today...

Есть предание, что Калигула построил на озере Неми роскошные увеселительные корабли. Никаких письменных источников о постройке, эксплуатации и гибели кораблей нет, но по маркировке найденных останков кораблей историки приписывают их именно Калигуле.
Начиная с XV века их упорно пытались поднять на поверхность. Отсутствие современных водолазных приспособлений позволяло ныряльщикам поднять на поверхность только куски обшивки, фрагменты орнаментов, мозаик, золотых украшений.
Останки со дна озера подняли по приказу Муссолини в 1927-1932 годах, но в 1944 году музей, где хранились эти корабли, был уничтожен пожаром.
Обо всех этих событиях сегодня в Неми напоминает небольшой бюст Калигулы, скромно расположившийся возле угла лавки, торгующей порчеттой...

In fact, Nemi is a small town of one street, and that's enough. But this is what many people need after the bustle of the capital of Rome. The main street is a terrace with a magnificent view of the lake on the left and bars on the right and with access through an arch to the lake embankment.

По сути, Неми — небольшой город одной улицы, и достаточно. Но именно это и нужно многим после стоkичной суеты Рима. Центральная улица — это терраса с великолепным видом на озеро слева и барами справа и с выходом через арку к набережной озера.

But how this lady ended up on the street of this city I do not know.
But tourists clearly like it. Everyone tries to touch the turtle. Years say that you need to make a wish and it will come true.

А вот как эта дама оказалась на улице этого города я не знаю.
Но туристам она явно нравится. Все стараются потрогать черепашку. Годы говорят, что нужно загадать желание и оно сбудется.

Пройдя по улице мы можем выйти на смотровую площадку с видом на озеро.

There are a lot of small shops and shops. We all liked that everything can be pre-tasted before you buy something. We tried all sorts of liqueurs, jams, cheeses, and meat. There were jokes that you can just live here and always be drunk and full for free.
You won't find that in my area. Except in the public market, and even then it is not the owners of the product who sell there. They rarely give you a taste of food.
Local specialty-porchetta (similar to pork pork) and cakes-baskets with ricotta cheese and strawberries.

Очень много маленьких магазинов и торговых лавочек. Нам всем понравилось, что всё можно предварительно попробовать на вкус перед тем как что-то купить. Мы попробовали всевозможные ликёры, джемы, сыры, мясо. Звучали шутки, что здесь можно просто жить и всегда будешь пьяным и сытым нахаляву.
В моей местности такого не встретишь. Разве только на общественном рынке, да и то там торгуют не хозяева товара и они не будут давать пробовать еду.
Местный специалитет — порчетта (аналог свиной буженины) и пирожные-корзинки с сыром рикотта и земляникой.

Nemi is called strawberry-strawberry Paradise. This is probably true. We saw berries here on the street at the end of December: take, try, buy.

Неми называют клубнично-земляничным раем. Наверное, это так и есть. Мы видели здесь на улице ягоды в конце декабря: бери, пробуй, покупай.

And what delicious bread in Italy!!! In a restaurant or cafe, bread is given first. And we, as true connoisseurs of alcoholic beverages, started drinking alcohol and eating bread. This is just yummy! You can not even wait for the main course and be satisfied with one bread.

А какой вкусный хлеб в Италии!!! В ресторане, кафе сначала дают хлеб. И мы как истинные ценители алкогольных напитков начинали пить алкоголь и закусывать хлебюом. Это просто вкуснятка! Можно даже не ждать основного блюда и быть довольным одним хлебом.

And it's also damn nice to meet a mailbox on the street of an Italian town like a mailbox at my house. Only I have it green.

А еще чертовски приятно встретить почтовый ящик на улице итальянского городка как у меня дома. Только у меня он зеленого цвета.

I am becoming more and more aware that I have not walked much in Rome and its environs. I want more.

Я всё больше понимаю, что я не нагулялся по Риму и его окрестностям. Хочу еще.
