Miasto nad rzeką Menam [PL] / A city on the Chao Phraya River [ENG]

September 2021 · 10 min read · Bangkok

Bangkok is a fantastic city. Very big, modern and at the same time largely green. What makes it a pleasant city to live in, despite crowds, traffic jams and smog, is the winding and quite cloudy Chao Phraya River. It fulfills an obvious transport and commercial function (water market), and, as it turns out, it can save the butt of careless tourists ;)

Transport

There is an inherent problem with such a large city: traffic jam. The riot of cars, motorbikes and tuktuks can make life in a big city very difficult. This is where the river comes in handy - it is a cheaper, faster and more reliable means of transport. In Bangkok you can rent a tourist boat or use the river buses. The latter are definitely cheaper, run according to the schedule and have specific stops, including the most interesting tourist spots in the city.

And as it happens, there is plenty to see in Bangkok.

Wodny bazarek / River Market

The floating market is now probably more of a tourist attraction than the real place where Thai people shop, but the whole idea comes from the actual Damnoen Saduak market, located about one and a half - two hours from Bangkok.
We spared the time for such trips and visited a smaller version of it in Bangkok - Taling Chan - which may actually be a bit "for the public", but at least it is close and offers nice views.

Poratunek / Rescue

W Bangkoku byłam dwa razy (w 2013 i w 2017 r.), odwiedzając zasadniczo te same miejsca.

I have been to Bangkok twice (in 2013 and 2017), visiting practically the same places. And it is true what they say about Bangkok: it is the perfect place for your first exotic trip. Everything is very well-organized there, and even beginners will do well. This is such a good direction to go for a start and then explore the world further.
After the first visit, we dared so much that during our second trip we decided to visit the jungle in the middle of the city.

Gdzie Pan, idź Pan, my idziemy zwiedzać dżunglę, przecież potem coś znajdziemy albo zamówimy z aplikacji! No i sobie Pan pojechał.

Dżungla w Bangkoku to nic innego jak Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and Botanical Garden. Znajduje się tutaj:

It was the afternoon of the last day of our stay in Bangkok, we were due to leave for Phuket at 4 am the very next morning. After completing all the temples and the royal palace, we decided that we still have plenty of time - so we're going to the jungle to see these funny kittens (dragons) live and up close.
I do not know why, instead of the river, we chose Uber or their Grab. So, of course, we got stuck in a traffic jam. When we finally got there, the kind driver offered to wait for us. What, no way man, we're going to explore the jungle, then we'll find or order something with the app! And so he went away.
The jungle in Bangkok is nothing but Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and Botanical Garden. It is here:

Amatorów "dżungli" na miejscu było całkiem sporo.

There were quite a lot of amateurs of the "jungle" there.

My z zapałem pooglądaliśmy warany odpływające w dal, a następnie ruszyliśmy w kierunku drogi dojazdowej.

The trip was quite nice, but all the good things come to an end quickly. As it is in Thailand - the sun suddenly set and it immediately became dark, and bloodthirsty mosquitoes, armed with malaria, dengue and zika, set out to eat. Other tourists disappeared immediately. We eagerly watched the dragons drifting away, and then headed towards the access road.
There were a few scooters in the parking lot, but no car. The last tourists jumped on scooters, but we decided that since there are as many as 7 of us, we won't use those scooters and will order Uber.
Soon the scooters were gone, but neither Uber took our report, nor did Grab.

Wytyczyliśmy sobie więc jakiś kierunek i ruszyliśmy piechotą. Idźcie w kierunku rzeki, ktoś Was przeprawi.

The amusement of the situation was that there was so dark, the mosquitoes eat mercilessly, we have no vision of how to return to the hotel, we were completely unpacked, and at 4 am we were to set off for Phuket.
So we set a direction for ourselves and set off on foot. We reached a gate with a building behind it. We called a nice gentleman and asked for help - could he order a taxi for us here? You almost amused yourself to tears, a taxi here? Nothing comes to this place! Go towards the river, someone will get you through.

...

Niesamowite wspomnienia.

After reaching the river, we saw a small pier on which a couple of tourists (probably Germans) were sitting. They confirmed that yes, every now and then someone passes by by boat, they would probably be happy to take us.
And in fact - in a few minutes a Taj arrived in a beautiful long boat. We asked how much he wanted for transporting us to the other side - he gave a sum of PLN 10. ** Ten zlotys for crossing us in the middle of the night. Seven people. So it was about PLN 1.40 per head. ** The man really did not realize that what amount he would not throw, would he receive the money, because he was our only salvation. Of course, after giving us back to his beloved civilization, he received a tip from us.
Unfortunately, we do not have any photos from this overnight crossing, because it was just too dark. However, I remember very well how the boat was moving slowly on the black surface of the water. Silence, broken only by an oar cutting through the water. Darkness, only in the distance the lights of the city on the opposite bank. A small, flat boat, the kind in which you have the impression that you are sitting almost on the water. Amazing memories.

We happily got to the hotel and left for Phuket in the morning. Another thing was that the next day I was caught by a slight fever that hit me with even greater force two days later. Well, even if it was dengue - I survived it;)
