[PL / ENG] Efez: milion zdjęć, 3 miliony ludzi / Ephesus: one million photos, three million people

Wybraliśmy się dzisiaj do Efezu, ażeby zobaczyć trochę tego tureckiego świata. Efez słynie z tego, że jest jednym z lepiej zachowanych miast starożytnych w tym rejonie. Nie odstraszyła nas mocno wygórowana cena taksówki (40€ w dwie strony, podczas gdy do Kusadasi w podobnej odległości cena dojazdu to 10€ w jedną stronę) ani wysoka cena wejścia na teren zabytku (400 lir tureckich, czyli jakieś 85 zł za osobę).
Co nas za to odstraszyło na miejscu?

We went to Ephesus today to see a bit of this Turkish world. Ephesus is famous for being one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the area. We were not deterred by the exorbitant price of a taxi (€40 return trip, while to Kusadasi at a similar distance, the travel price is €10 one way) or the high price of entry to the monument (400 Turkish lira, or about PLN 85 per person).
What put us off on the spot?
Huge crowds!

Po odstaniu swojego w kolejce po bilety w oddali już zobaczyliśmy masę ludzi, żądnych starożytnych widoków. Trochę nas to zaniepokoiło, ale odwrotu już nie było - ruszyliśmy w kierunku wycieczki.

After standing in line for tickets in the distance we already saw a lot of people eager for ancient views. We were a little worried, but there was no turning back - we headed towards the sightseeing route.

Ogólne wrażenie byłoby całkiem niezłe - ładne ruiny w otoczeniu miłej dla oka zieleni.

The overall impression would be quite good - nice ruins surrounded by pleasant greenery.

Jest też bardzo dużo kotów. To chyba takie kocie miasto. Niestety, wiele z nich była mocno ranna. Brakujące nosy i zadrapane oczy były na porządku dziennym. One chyba między sobą tak walczą, czy co?

There are also lots of cats. I guess it's a cat city. Unfortunately, many of them were badly injured. Missing noses and scratched eyes were the order of the day. They seem to be fighting with each other, aren't they?

Ten czarny kocur z daleka wyglądał na zadowolonego z życia, ale przy bliższej inspekcji okazało się, że ma potargane ucho.

This black tomcat looked content with life from a distance, but on closer inspection it turned out that he had a ruffled ear.

Ten poniżej natomiast wyglądał na okaz zdrowia i był wielce fotogeniczny.

The one below looked healthy and very photogenic.

Pierwszą ruiną, która przykuła naszą uwagę, był tzw. Odeon, czyli mały amfiteatr.
Nie był taki mały, ale w porównaniu do znajdującego się nieco dalej teatru wielkiego faktycznie był niepozorny.

The first ruin that caught our attention was the so-called Odeon, a small amphitheater.
It wasn't that small, but compared to the grand theater located a little further away, it was actually inconspicuous.

Doszliśmy do punktu, z którego jest ładny widok na znajdującą się poniżej malowniczą drogę Kuretów, prowadzącą aż do biblioteki.
Na widok tego tłumu cierpnie trochę skóra i słusznie. Spacer w takim tłoku naprawdę nie należy do przyjemnych.

We have reached the point from which there is a nice view of the picturesque Curetes Street below, leading to the ancient library.
The skin crawls a little at the sight of this crowd, and rightly so. Walking in such a crowd is really not pleasant.

Droga Kuretów (w starożytności Embolos) biegnąca przez zagłębienie doliny pomiędzy dwoma górami miejskimi jako dawna Droga Procesyjna nie pokrywa się z ortogonalną siatką ulic hellenistyczno-ramańskiego miasta. Główny bulwar o długości 210 m został prestiżowo wyposażony w portyki i marmurową nawierzchnię we wczesnym okresie cesarstwa. Pod ulicą o szerokości 6,80-10 m przebiegał kanał kanalizacyjny. Sklepy (tabernae) znajdowały się za portykami o głębokości 3,5-4,5 m, w których kupcy, rzemieślnicy i karczmarze oferowali swoje towary i usługi. Wzdłuż ulicy przed każdą kolumną stała podstawa z inskrypcją podtrzymująca posąg z marmuru lub brązu; na nich czczono dobre uczynki obywateli i dobroczyńców. Stromą ulicę (z różnicą wzniesień ok. 20 m) ostatecznie zamknięto dla ruchu przez zbudowaną w późnym antyku „Bramę Heraklesa”. Naprawy konserwacyjne trwały aż do VI/VII wieku naszej ery.

The Curetes Street (in antiquity, the Embolos) running through the valley depression between the two city mountains as the former Processional Way, does not follow the orthogonal street grid of the Hellenistic-Ra- man city. The 210 m long main boulevard was prestigi- ously equipped with porticoes and marble paving in the early Imperial period. A sewer channel ran under the 6.80-10 m wide street. The shops (tabernae) lay behind the 3.5-4.5 m deep porticoes in which tradesmen, artisans and Innkeepers offered their goods and services. Along the street, an inscribed base supporting a marble or bronze statue stood in front of each column; on these, the good deeds of citizens and benefactors were honoured. The steep street (with a difference in elevation of ca. 20 m) was finally closed to traffic through the 'Heracles Gate' built in the late antique period. Maintenance repairs continued well into the 6/7 centuries A.D.

Po drugiej stronie znajduje się bodajże zamknięta agora, do której wstęp jednakże wymaga nabycia kolejnego biletu - tym razem za dodatkowe 170 lirów. Stwierdziliśmy, że to już lekutka przesada, bo i tak przyznajmy otwarcie - tanio nie jest, a do tego tłumy i kolejka do wejścia do agory skutecznie zniechęciły do udziału w tym zwiedzaniu.

On the other side, there is probably a closed agora, the entrance to which, however, requires the purchase of another ticket - this time for an additional 170 lire. We decided that this was a bit of an exaggeration, because let's admit it openly - it's not cheap, and the crowds and the queue to enter the agora effectively discouraged people from participating in this tour.

ŚWIĄTYNIA HADRIANA - P. Vedius Antoninus Sabinus ufundował smail, świątyniopodobny pomnik, który według inskrypcji na budynku uhonorował cesarza Hadriana (117-138 n.e.) Kolumnada przed cellą podtrzymuje tzw. szczyt syryjski . Płaskorzeźby z kropką przedstawiające przebudowę antyczną. mit belon Wzniesiono 200 posągów cesarzy Klecjana Konstancjusza, Maksymiana, a później Teodozjusza 1, z których zachowały się inskrypowane podstawy.

THE TEMPLE OF HADRIAN - P. Vedius Antoninus Sabinus donated the smail, temple-like monument which, accor ding to a building inscription, honoured Emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117-138) The colonnade in front of the cella supports a so-called Syrian gable. The reliels aven dot depicting the antique rebuilding. myth belon 200 statues of the emperors cletian Constantius, Maximianus and later Theodosius 1 were erected, of which inscribed bases are preserved.

Jest i wielki teatr - a ten jest naprawdę duży. Miłośnikom tego typu ruin na pewno zrobi wrażenie.

There is also a great theater - and this one is really big. Lovers of this type of ruins will surely be impressed.

Poszliśmy jeszcze jedną odnogą, aby dojść do Kościoła Maryi, bo o nim opowiadał nam nasz kierowca. Czy warto było nadłożyć drogi, żeby zobaczyć to miejsce? Hmm.

We took another branch to get to the Church of Mary, because our driver told us about it. Was it worth the trip to see this place? hmm.

KOŚCIÓŁ MARYI (KOŚCIÓŁ RADY)
Trójnawowy kościół biskupi miejski o wymiarach 145 x 30 m został wzniesiony w południowej stoa Kwartetu Olimpijskiego. Bazylika zasłynęła jako miejsce III Soboru Ekumenicznego (Maryja jako Matka Boża) w 431 r. Kościół był wielokrotnie przebudowywany w późnym okresie bizantyjskim. Najpóźniej w VII wieku siedziba biskupa została przeniesiona do bazyliki św. Jana, ale jako kościół cmentarny kościół Mariacki był używany aż do średniowiecza.

THE CHURCH OF MARY (THE COUNCIL CHURCH)
The 145 x 30 m large, three-aisled bishop;s church of the city was erected in the southern stoa of the Olympian Quartet. The basilica became renowned as the site of the 3rd Ecumenical Council (Mary as Mother of God) in A.D. 431. The church was rebuilt numerous times in the late Byzantine period. At the latest in the 7th century, the seat of the bishop was transferred to St. John Basilica, but as a cementary church the Church of Mary continued to be used well into the Middle Ages.

Na podsumowanie, poniżej mapa z naszą wędrówką. Czy Efez jest wartościowym miejscem do zwiedzenia? Ja nie przepadam za ruinami, wolę spędzać czas wakacyjny wędrując po urokliwych starych miasteczkach albo podziwiać dziką naturę. Na pewno nie poszłabym więc tam drugi raz, zwłaszcza biorąc pod uwagę cenę i tłumy. Ale muszę przyznać, że parę miejsc tu robi wrażenie, zwłaszcza biblioteka.

To sum up, below is a map of our journey. Is Ephesus a worthwhile place to visit? I don't like ruins, I prefer to spend my holiday time wandering around charming old towns or admiring wild nature. So I would definitely not go there again, especially considering the price and the crowds. But I have to admit that some places here are impressive, especially the library.
