Change your plans and let yourself be surprised!

It's good to change plans sometimes and discover something amazing.

During the trip to Iceland, We spent every night at a different campsite. One of them stayed in my memory; it was a Þakgil, magical place hidden in a beautiful glacial canyon. We got there by accident - we had a reservation at another campsite, but at the last minute our guide changed his mind. We were after a walk on Sólheimasandur Beach, the next day we were going to see, among others, Black Sand Beach.

We were driving to the Þakgil in complete darkness. The road was very bumpy and tiring, and we were very curious about the landscape behind the car windows. We arrived at the camping around midnight and we were dreaming only about a quick supper and rest.

When I opened the tent in the morning, I was delighted. I was in a small space, flat as a table, surrounded by rocky slopes, which were covered with suede green. In this intimate place, protected from all sides, there was not a bit of wind, an unusual thing in Iceland! There was very quiet; it was also relatively warm despite the cloudy weather.

Although I turned around on my axis several times, I couldn't determine from which way we came yesterday.

It turned out that we slept right under the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, under which the Katla volcano is hidden.

I was very sorry that the busy schedule didn't allow us to trek around the area. It's one of those places in Iceland where I want to go back.

We left the campsite in the morning, on the same route (there was no other way). The landscapes we passed were so beautiful that we stopped twice to admire them.

First stop: the combination of huge, flat, and barren spaces covered by volcanic dust with the beautiful, green hills was breathtaking.

After about 10 minutes, we stopped for the second time. We arrived at the viewpoint, from where there was a beautiful view of the river Múlakvísl and the coast.

We came from there; you can see a glacier hiding in the clouds.

And now look at the coast.

This is what you can look at endlessly.

A bit of relaxation in the warm sun. It was a fleeting moment of happiness.

Then, when we were going to Vík, we could still admire beautiful views outside the car window. It was an incredible combination of the harsh, volcanic landscape with lush green.

And to think that if it wasn't for coincidence, I'd never see it!

After returning home, I read a little about this area. It turned out that it's not very popular among tourists; I couldn't believe it! Such a beautiful, wild place! Anyway, I'm happy that we changed our plans that day, it was worth it!
