Axeman's Travelfeed #008 - Port of Klaipeda

September 2019 · 4 min read · Klaipėda

Today we are going to the small journey around the place I live. But not to the city itself, but to have a look onto the port aquatory.
Well, the Klaipeda city is long and narrow, situated along the Curonian gulf and obviously was developing as a port, but only from one, eastern side. The western side is Curonian Spit - amazing place under protection of UNESCO - authentic nature with a sandy dunes. The port aquatory is pretty narrow and since actually you can not just go to any stevedoring company in port without a permit, only you have to do is to take a small ferry to other side of the gulf and there you can just walk along the coast observing the port from other side...

This is how it looks from google maps

So we are going to do exactly this... Taking the small ferry and here we go with first shots to see what happens around.

Those are DFDS cargo ferries terminal. Exactly the time when all the free are alongside, but soon at least two of them gonna sail as per daily schedule (to Germany, Sweden, etc)

So we are ashore and slowly walking to the southern part of theport, more inside and further from the gates

On the way to the south there is some old berths where presently you can see some port infrastructure vessels, like heavy floating crane, few small tugboats and boats, also some barges.
Here are some interesting "marine" details

Going further to the south we can see container terminal from the opposite side. And from our side some funny stones with smileys

At this point we are reaching the normal pathway and can go further only via forest road. So we are turning back and on the way catching few more shots

At this point, when obviously nothing much more interesting to shoot to be expected, here cam the FULL MOON!

Reaching the ferry, which depart still every 20 mins as daytime schedule. But now dark comes very quick. And manage to get some blue hour darker shots while passing the gulf back to city side

And that's the end for today. Hope you have enjoyed the journey!
