Axeman's Travelfeed #013 - Klaipeda Old City. Autumn impressions through Fish Eye Part #1

October 2019 · 6 min read · Klaipėda

About 5-6 years ago, when I have actually started my journey into photography more or less actively, that was a fun time of trials... That was interesting to try various types of lenses, color filters, different genres of photography. So, actually I have my archive from those times pretty packed with city walks and some fun staff.
One of such pretty funny experiments was street shooting with a fish eye lens without further lens correction in Lightroom (which is actually possible). Those highly distorted images are fun to play with trying to get very unusual perspectives and curves.

So here we go and start our journey around Klaipeda Old City closer to nice and warm autumn sunset, combined with amazing autumn colors and perfect blue sky with nice white could formations

Just few general words about Old City itself. Klaipeda has pretty complex record history being all the time quite important regionally due ice-free port and initially was controlled by Prussia and the German Empire until 1919. In 1923 it was annexed by Lithuania and remained until 1939 while returned to Germany as a result of famous Molotov-Ribbentrop pact (between Germany and Soviet Union). The comes WWII and from 1945 Klaipeda becomes a part of Soviet Lithuanian Republic, while Lithuania finally gets independence in 1991.

The Old Town is actually represent more the German heritage with small narrow streets and stone roads.
And here we go with first views from the embankment of the river Dane

From the opposite side we can see Klaipeda Town Hall, which was temporary residence of the King Frederick William III of Prussia and his wife Queen Louise. The sculpture for the fisherman was built in Soviet times

Next we are approaching "Birzos Bridge", one of the main City highlights. Being wooden for quite a long time the steel one was built in 1877 only and it is opens to let yachts and bigger boats to get inside the river

Passing the central road and at the other side of the bridge we approaching another symbol of Klaipeda - sailing vessel "Meridianas". As a result of the claim and as WWII contribution, the series of those ships were built by Finland and passed to Soviet Union. In 1949 the newly built ship was passed to Klaipeda Seamen High School and was used for cadet practice till 1967. From 1970 it was moored at this place as a restaurant, while in 2012-2014 completely repaired.
