Discover the Underwater World

Koh Lipe is located in the Andaman Sea and part of the Tarutao National Marine Park. The region is quite known for its diverse underwater world. There are a lot of PADI and SSI diving centers on Koh Lipe offering all kind of diving licenses. We didn’t choose to do our open water license here as the prices are a bit higher than in the Gulf of Thailand region. In retrospect, I would choose the region for a diving license over the Gulf region as its much more protected and not as busy as the diving spots on Koh Tao.

What I can though recommend is booking a snorkeling trip at one of the local agencies. They offer four different “slow” trips and one speedboat trip. We compared several offers but the prices are not negotiable and the same everywhere anyway. The agents will always try to recommend the speedboat trip as it’s more expensive, which was quite funny for us because from what they described, it’s not at all what we expected from a snorkeling trip. Hop off the boat, take a picture, hop on, drive to the next destination, hop off, take pictures, hop on again aaand so on.
We decided to take Trip B which was a great experience. The only thing they don’t tell you: You have to be a really good swimmer for seeing the colorful corals of Jabang as there is REALLY strong current. Even breast-stroke swimming didn’t work anymore. So some people just had to stay in the boat.

Shopping on Walking Street

Walking street is the main street on Koh Lipe with plenty of stores, restaurants, bars, ATMs, pharmacies and food stalls. The food and drinks here are cheaper than in the beach restaurants.
The shops offer diverse products, mainly wooden souvenirs, clothing, sunglasses, and jewelry. The prices are almost fixed, the sellers don’t bargain a lot, but most things were anyways not much more expensive than in Bangkok. I loved especially the hippie charm of most stores. In contrast to the shops on other islands, the shops here were selling much more alternative colorful garments and self-made bracelets.

Enjoy diverse Food & Drinks

Especially on Walking Street but also at the beaches you can find a lot of seafood restaurants selling freshly caught fish and lobsters. We found some restaurants offering it in an all-you-can-eat menu with side dishes.
After some days of Thai food, most tourists feel like having some variety. A good burger place is The Box Restaurant on Walking Street with a relaxed atmosphere.
Serendipity Rock Bar Restaurant is offering one of the best views on its beach terrace.
Also, bar-wise Koh Lipe has a lot of Hippie charm. You will come across several reggae bars with a special smell filling the air. Most people in those bars are really open-minded so it’s a great place to make new connections.
Best dessert tip: Coconut donut for 10 Baht (roughly 30 Cents). You will easily find them, just follow the coconut donut song calling from far away.

Hike to the Viewpoints in Koh Adang and Koh Lipe

The most popular view over Koh Lipe can be experienced from the neighbor island Koh Adang which is only a ten minute boat drive away from Koh Lipe. You will reach the island by longtail boat from Pattaya beach or Sunrise beach for around 6 Dollar per person.
If you want to spare that money you can also hike to the viewpoint on Koh Lipe itself. The path starts close to The Cliff Resort straight through the woods. It’s so small that it’s not pretty obvious and we also were the only ones up there by that time. Afterwards I knew why: The route through the woods is like running the gauntlet through flocks of mosquitos, so remember to bring a strong repellent.

Clean the Beach as a Trash Hero

Unfortunately, due to the masses of tourists arriving on the small island every day, Koh Lipe has a massive waste problem. Especially some parts of Sunrise beach are riddled with litter. Therefore the Trash Hero movement is inviting everyone on Koh Lipe each Monday to clean the island together and pick up waste. Entdecke die Unterwasserwelt

Koh Lipe befindet sich in der Andamanensee und ist Teil des Tarutao Marine Nationalparks. Die Region ist für ihre vielfältige Unterwasserwelt bekannt. Auf Koh Lipe gibt es viele PADI und SSI Tauchschulen, die alle möglichen Tauchlizenzen anbieten. Wir haben uns dagegen entschieden unseren Open Water Schein hier zu machen, da die Preise hier höher sind als im Golf von Thailand. Rückblickend würde ich die Lizenz eher hier als im Golf von Thailand machen, weil die Region viel besser erhalten und beschützt ist und nicht ganz so viel los ist wie an den Tauchplätzen auf Koh Tao.

Was ich trotzdem empfehlen kann ist einen Schnorchelausflug in einer der örtlichen Agenturen zu buchen. Es gibt vier verschiedene “langsame” Routen und einen Speedboat Trip. Wir haben verschiedene Angebote verglichen, die Preise sind aber ohnehin nicht verhandelbar und überall gleich. Die Angestellten versuchen immer einem die Speedboat Tour zu empfehlen, weil die teurer ist. Wir fanden das recht lustig, so wie sie die Tour beschreiben entspricht sie so gar nicht unseren Vorstellungen eines Schnorcheltrips. Runter vom Boot, Bilder machen, rauf auf’s Boot, zur nächsten Haltestelle fahren, runter vom Boot, Bilder machen, rauf auf’s Boot uuuund so weiter.
Wir haben uns für die Tour B entschieden, die wirklich sehr schön war. Die einzige Sache, die einem keiner sagt: Man muss wirklich sehr gut schwimmen können, um die bunten Korallen von Jabang sehen zu können, weil die Strömung dort WIRKLICH stark ist. Selbst Brustschwimmen hat dort nicht mehr geklappt. Deshalb mussten einige Leute einfach im Boot bleiben.

Shopping in der Walking Street

Die Walking Street ist die Hauptstraße auf Koh Lipe mit zahlreichen Läden, Restaurant, Bars, Geldautomaten, Apotheken und Garküchen. Essen und Trinken ist hier günstiger als in den Strandrestaurants.
Die Läden bieten vielfältige Produkte an, hauptsächlich hölzerne Souvenirs, Kleidung, Sonnenbrillen und Schmuck. Die Preise sind relativ fix, die Verkäufer lassen nicht viel mit sich handeln, allerdings sind die meisten Dinge ohnehin nicht viel teurer als in Bangkok. Ich fand besonders den Hippie-Charme vieler Läden toll. Im Gegensatz zu den Läden auf anderen Inseln, gibt es hier viele alternative bunte Gewänder und selbstgemachte Armbänder.

Genieße vielfältige Gerichte & Getränke

Besonders auf der Walking Street aber auch an den Stränden gibt es viele Fischrestaurant, die fangfrischen Fisch und Lobster anbieten. Einige Restaurant bieten ihn auch als All-You-Can-Eat Menü mit Beilagen an.
Nach ein paar Tagen thailändischen Essens sehnt sich so mancher Tourist nach ein wenig Abwechslung. Ein gutes Burger Restaurant dafür ist The Box auf der Walking Street mit einer relaxten Atmosphäre.
Im Serendipity Rock Bar Restaurant findet man eine der schönsten Strandterrassen.
Auch Bar-technisch hat Koh Lipe viel Hippie-Charme. Man kommt an einigen Reggae Bars vorbei, bei denen ein ganz spezieller Duft in der Luft liegt. Die meisten Leute in diesen Bars sind recht aufgeschlossen, deshalb lernt man hier schnell neue Leute kennen.
Bester Nachspeise Tipp: Kokosnuss Donut für 10 Baht (circa 25 Cent). Man kann sie kaum verpassen, einfach dem Ruf des Coconut Donut Songs folgen, den man schon aus der Ferne hört.

Steige zu den Aussichtspunkten in Koh Adang und Koh Lipe

Die bekannteste Aussicht über Koh Lipe findet man auf der Nachbarinsel Koh Adang, die nur eine zehn minütige Bootsfahrt von Koh Lipe entfernt ist. Man erreicht die Insel per Longtail Boot vom Pattaya Beach oder vom Sunrise Beach für circa 5 Euro pro Person.
Wenn man sich das Geld sparen will kann man auch zum Aussichtspunkt auf Koh Lipe selbst wandern. Der Pfad startet in der Nähe des The Cliff Resorts und führt direkt durch den Wald. Er ist so schmal, dass er kaum auffällt und wir waren auch die Einzigen dort zu dem Zeitpunkt. Später wusste ich wieso: Die Route durch den Wald ist wie ein Spießrutenlauf durch Scharen von Mosquitos, deshalb sollte man ein starkes Mückenspray mitnehmen.

Säubere den Strand als Trash Hero

Durch die Massen an Touristen die jeden Tag auf der kleinen Insel ankommen, hat Koh Lipe leider ein massives Müllproblem. Speziell manche Strandabschnitte am Sunrise Beach sind mit Müll gerade so gespickt.
