Food in Thailand

The Thai cuisine consists most often of rice, vegetables, meat/prawns, rice noodles and a lot of spices. You get a whole meal for 4-5 dollars at low-middle class restaurants. It’s even cheaper at the food stalls on the streets. Main dishes start at 2 dollars for Pad Thai noodles - the most popular dish at tourists. The authentic Thai cuisine is more likely to be found at non-touristy regions, especially on markets that are less well known to tourists. There are a few hints you should know before ordering food in Thailand: A lot of tourists of western civilizations can’t stand the food in Thailand, because they are not used to such a high level of bacteria in the food. Therefore it’s a good idea to eat at food stalls that are highly frequented to make sure the food hasn’t been lying in the heat for a longer time. Second tip is to order “super extra no spicy food” - I’m not kidding with the wording - if you’re not to tolerant with well-spiced food. Most waiters know “spicy”, “thai spicy” and “no spicy”. But the category “no spicy” is still far from not being spicy in Thailand.

Food

Khao San & Rambuttri Road

Khao San Road is THE backpacker hotspot in Thailand. It’s a street packed with hostels, shops and street stands where you can buy almost anything - even fake IDs - party till late night on the street and buy food all around the clock - even “special interest food” like grilled spiders, bugs and grasshoppers. Since a few years it turned to a wohle open air club, one bar next to the other is trying to beat the volume of the neighbors’ bar. For a relaxed meal, a few ice cold beers and nice music I would definitely recommend the neighbor street Rambuttri Road over the Khao San Road itself. It has a much more relaxed vibe and isn’t that noisey and over crowded. Here you will find plenty of outdoor restaurants with great colored lanterns, playing Reggae music and serving the typical Thai tourist dishes like Pad Thai, Fried Rice or Curries.

China Town

In most cities China Town is a well-known Tourist spot. In Bangkok it’s not that popular with tourists and seems more like a normal district with a lot of Chinese super markets. Because it’s more frequented by locals it’s a great place for cheap street food. It’s mostly still Thai food but you will probably not recognize one dish. That’s what makes it exciting to just walk around and discover the different tastes.

Special locations

If you're searching for a spot for a special dinner there are two good choices: "Asiatique" is a beautiful esplanade along the river with plenty of good food choices from all different countries. It's a bit expensive for Thailand, so this is really more worth doing on a special occasion. Another special restaurant is the "Eagle Nest Bar", a dreamy restaurant at the river where you will enjoy a stunning view on the temple Wat Arun on the other side of the river - it's wonderful lighted by night.

Bars

Sky bars

The best way to discover Bangkok from above is to visit one of the many sky bars on top of the skyscrapers in Bangkok. If you haven’t seen the Skyline from above, you definitely missed something! The most famous one is maybe the Lebua Sky Bar from the movie “Hangover”. There’s not a lot you can do wrong with choosing a sky bar - they all have some things in common. The prices for drinks are pretty high - comparable to European standards - and the dress code is strict: No flip flops, no shorts for men, no tank tops and sometimes even covered shoulders and knees are a must. But the view is definitely worth it! A good sky bar is the Octave Bar on top of the Marriot Hotel - they have happy hour during 5 and 7 pm - the best time for a sunset view. Another good choice is “The Nest Rooftop Bar” on top of the “Le Fenix Hotel” which has a relaxed vibe inviting for a drink on one of the big daybeds between the green plants.

Sukhumvit Road

If you’re searching for a place to go out, Sukhumvit Road will be your address! Especially Soi Sukhumvit 11 (street number 11) offers plenty of bars, restaurants and night clubs. If you’re traveling on a budget, definitely try “Cheap Charlie’s” - a freaky jungle-like bar that offers all drinks for 80 Baht (≈ 2,50$). Most sky bars are also located in the district around Sukhumvit Road.

Essen in Thailand

Die thailändische Küche besteht vorwiegend aus Reis, Gemüse, Fleisch/Garnelen, Reisnudeln und vielen Gewürzen. Man bekommt eine volle Mahlzeit für 3-4 Euro in günstigen bis mittelklasse Restaurants. Noch günstiger wird’s an den Garküchen auf der Straße. Hauptgerichte starten dort bei einem Euro für Pad Thai Nudeln - dem bekanntesten Gericht bei Touristen. Authentisch thailändische Küche findet man eher in nicht-touristischen Regionen, insbesondere auf Märkten, die bei den Touristen nicht so bekannt sind. Es gibt ein paar Hinweise die man beachten sollte, wenn man in Thailand Essen bestellt: Viele westliche Touristen vertragen das Essen in Thailand nicht, da sie die hohe Anzahl an Bakterien im Essen nicht gewohnt sind. Deshalb ist es ratsam in Garküchen zu essen, bei denen viel los ist, um sicher zu gehen, dass das Essen nicht länger in der Hitze lag. Der zweite Tipp ist, sein Essen “super extra nicht scharf” zu bestellen, wenn man kein scharfes Essen mag. Die meisten Kellner kennen “scharf”, “thailändisch scharf” und “nicht scharf”. Aber die Kategorie “nicht scharf” ist immer noch weit davon entfernt nicht scharf zu sein!

Essen

Khao San & Rambuttri Road

Die Khao San ist DIE Backpacker-Straße in Thailand. Die ganze Straße ist voll mit Hostels, Läden und Straßenständen, wo man fast alles kaufen kann - sogar gefälschte Ausweise - ,bis spät in die Nacht auf der Straße feiern kann und Essen rund um die Uhr kaufen kann - auch “besonderes Essen” wie gegrillte Spinnen, Käfer und Heuschrecken. Seit ein paar Jahren hat sich die Straße zu einem einzigen Open Air Club entwickelt, eine Bar neben der anderen versucht die Musiklautstärke der Nachbar-Bar zu übertrumpfen. Für ein entspanntes Abendessen, ein paar kalte Bier und schöne Musik, würde ich definitiv die Nachbarstraße Rambuttri Road empfehlen. Hier findet man unzählige Restaurants mit tollen bunten Lampions auf der Straße, die Reggae Musik spielen und die typischen thailändischen Touristen-Gerichte Pad Thai, Fried Rice und Curries servieren.

China Town

In vielen Städten ist China Town ein bekannter Touristen Spot. In Bangkok ist es bei Touristen nicht so bekannt und wirkt mehr wie ein normales Viertel mit vielen chinesischen Supermärkten. Da es bekannter bei den Einheimischen ist, ist es ein super Ort für günstiges Street Food. Es gibt überwiegend thailändisches Essen, dennoch war mir kaum ein Gericht vertraut. Deshalb ist es aufregend, einfach nur umher zu schlendern und die verschiedenen Geschmäcker zu entdecken.

Besondere Locations

Wenn du nach einem Ort für ein besonderes Abendessen suchst, stehen zwei gute Spots zur Auswahl: "Asiatique" ist eine schöne Promenade am Fluß mit viel Auswahl an guten Restaurants aus allen möglichen Herrenländern. Für thailändische Verhältnisse ist es etwas teuer, daher ist es wirklich eher eine Empfehlung für besondere Anlässe. Ein weiteres besonderes Restaurant ist die "Eagle Nest Bar", ein verträumtes Restaurant am Flussufer, wo man einen fantastischen Ausblick auf den Tempel Wat Arun auf der anderen Seite des Flusses hat - bei Nacht ist der wunderschön beleuchtet.

Bars

Rooftop Bars

Der beste Weg um Bangkok von oben zu erleben, ist ein Besuch in einer der vielen Sky Bars auf den Dächern der Wolkenkratzer in Bangkok. Wenn du die Skyline nicht von oben gesehen hast, hast du definitiv etwas verpasst! Die bekannteste Bar ist vermutlich die Lebua Sky Bar aus dem Film “Hangover”. Bei der Wahl der Skybar kann man nicht viel falsch machen - sie alle haben einiges gemeinsam. Die Preise sind ziemlich hoch - vergleichbar mit europäischen Standards - und der Dresscode ist streng: Keine Flip Flops, keine kurzen Hosen bei Männern, keine Tanktops und manchmal sogar bedeckte Schultern und Knie. Aber die Aussicht ist es definitiv wert! Eine gute Rooftop Bar ist die Octave Bar auf dem Dach des Marriot Hotels - dort ist zwischen 17 und 19 Uhr Happy Hour - die beste Zeit für einen Ausblick bei Sonnenuntergang. Eine andere gute Wahl ist die “The Nest Rooftop Bar” auf dem “Le Fenix Hotel”, wo die relaxte Atmosphäre auf einen Drink auf einem der großen Betten zwischen den grünen Pflanzen einlädt.

Sukhumvit Road

Wenn du nach einer guten Location suchst um auszugehen, ist die Sukhumvit Road deine Adresse! Insbesondere die Soi Sukhumvit 11 (Straßennummer 11) bietet unzählige Bars, Restaurants und Nachtclubs. Wenn du mit wenig Budget unterwegs bist, besuch definitiv das “Cheap Charlie’s” - eine verrückte dschungel-artige Bar die alle Getränke für 80 Baht anbieten (≈ 2,00€). Die meisten Sky Bars sind auch im Viertel der Sukhumvit Road zu finden.
