The Maldives of Thailand

Koh Lipe is often said to be the Maldive of Thailand. I’ve never been to the Maldives but from all Thai islands I’ve seen it’s by far the most paradisiac one. Crystal clear water surrounds pure white beaches. There are almost no cars on the island, only motorbikes with sidecars, everyone else is just walking. But it’s anyways so small, you can walk around the whole island in two hours. It’s the most southern island of Thailand, the neighboring island Langkawi is already belonging to Malaysia. We had a combined ticket of flight, bus and boat service from Bangkok provided by Air Asia, which is also the best way to get there! It costs around 60 Dollars all in - you don’t have to mind about any transfer.

Where to stay

The shape of the island looks like a triangle - this results in three main beaches. There’s Pattaya Beach in the south where the big transfer boats from the mainland arrive. It’s the most touristy and busy one as also the main walking street of Koh Lipe ends up on this beach.
The eastern one - Sunrise beach - is said to be the most beautiful one with it’s broad white sand strip.
And last but not least there is Sunset beach in the north, which offers stunning sunsets and a relaxed atmosphere.
All three of them have advantages and disadvantages. I will share some impressions of the different beaches in the upcoming posts, starting with Sunset beach today.

Sunset Beach

Of course also this beach has its drawbacks: With ten minutes walk it’s the furthest distance in order to get to the walking street with all its shops and restaurants.
We chose Sunset beach for our accommodation as we rather walk a bit for food and action and have a relaxed atmosphere and a bit of solitude at our accommodation therefore. And for me - after seeing the other beaches - it was still the best choice you could do!
It’s a mixture of sandy bays and rocks in between, so the best spot for snorkeling. There are only three to four resorts in one bay, each consisting of small unique bungalows overlooking the bay.

We stayed at Bayview Sunset Resort, which was such a great experience, I could have stayed there forever. The little huts built on a hill only consist of a bedroom and a small bathroom - but even from the shower or the toilet you could see the beach through the huge window. The restaurant at the beach serves breakfast for the guests each morning and if you get hungry in the afternoon they offer the world bests tomato salad and chicken sandwich that I’ve ever tried! The owner is Spanish so she always adds an extra portion cilantro to her dishes. We enjoyed them together with ice cold pineapple shakes on one of the relaxing daybeds on the beach.
The hotel also cares for two stray dogs living on the beach, that will always curiously welcome you. For me this place is heaven on earth!

There’s a mojito booth a few meters away offering mojito for 80 Baht (3$) in the evening. A lot of people visited the beach for only this and the amazing sunset.

Koh Lipe wird oft als die Malediven Thailands bezeichnet. Ich war noch nie auf den Malediven aber von allen Thailändischen Inseln die ich gesehen habe ist es bei weitem die paradiesischste. Kristallklares Wasser umgibt strahlend weiße Strände. Es gibt kaum Autos auf der Insel, nur Roller mit Beiwagen, alle anderen sind zu Fuß unterwegs. Aber die Insel ist ohnehin so klein, dass man sie in zwei Stunden umrunden kann. Es ist die südlichste Insel Thailands, die Nachbarinsel Langkawi gehört bereits zu Malaysien. Wie hatten ein Kombiticket von Air Asia, bestehend aus Flug, Bus und Boot von Bangkok aus. Das ist auch die einfachste Lösung um dorthin zu gelangen. Es kostet rund 50 Euro mit allem - man muss sich um nichts mehr kümmern.

Unterkunft

Die Insel hat eine dreieckige Form - deshalb gibt es drei Hauptstrände. Es gibt den Pattaya Beach im Süden wo die großen Transfer Boote vom Festland ankommen. Es ist der touristischste und vollste Strand, da die Haupteinkaufsmeile von Koh Lipe direkt an diesem Strand endet.
Der östliche - Sunrise Beach - wird mit seinen breiten weißen Sandstreifen oft als der schönste bezeichnet.
Und zu guter letzt gibt es noch den Sunset Beach im Norden, der mit beeindruckenden Sonnenuntergängen und einer relaxten Atmosphäre lockt.
Bei der Wahl der Unterkunft hat jeder der drei Strände Vor- und Nachteile. Ich werde in meinen kommenden Posts mehr Eindrücke von den verschiedenen Stränden teilen, beginnend mit Sunset Beach heute.

Sunset Beach

Natürlich hat auch dieser Strand seine Nachteile: Mit zehn Gehminuten zur Walking Street mit ihren Läden und Restaurants ist er am weitesten abgelegen.
Wir haben unsere Unterkunft am Sunset Beach gewählt, da wir lieber ein wenig für Essen und Action laufen und dafür eine relaxte Atmosphäre und ein wenig Einsamkeit an unserer Unterkunft bekommen. Und nach dem ich die anderen Strände gesehen habe war es definitiv die beste Wahl die wir hätten treffen können!
Der Strand ist eine Mischung aus sandigen Buchten und Felsen und daher der perfekte Ort zum Schnorcheln. In jeder Bucht gibt es nur drei bis vier Hotelanlagen, bestehend aus kleinen individuellen Bungalows, die die Bucht überblicken.

Wir waren im Bayview Sunset Resort, wo es so toll war, dass ich dort für immer hätte bleiben können. Die kleinen Hütten wurden auf einem Hügel am Strand gebaut und bestehen nur aus einem Schlafzimmer und einem kleinen Bad - aber sogar von der Dusche oder der Toilette konnte man den Strand durch das riesige Fenster sehen. Frühstück gibt es jeden Morgen im Restaurant am Strand. Und wenn man Nachmittags Hunger bekommt gibt es dort den weltbesten Tomatensalat und Hühnchen Sandwiches die ich je probiert habe! Die Besitzerin ist spanisch, deshalb fügt sie ihren Gerichten immer eine extra Portion Koriander zu. Die haben wir zusammen mit einem kühlen Ananas Shake auf einer der Liegen direkt am Strand genossen. Das Hotel kümmert sich auch um zwei Straßenhunde, die einen immer neugierig begrüßen. Für mich war dieser Ort der Himmel auf Erden!

Ein paar meter weiter gibt es einen Mojito Stand, der Abends Mojitos für 80 Baht (2€) anbietet. Viele Leute sind extra dafür und für den tollen Sonnenuntergang an diesen Strand gekommen.
