Northgreen Cafe: Sydney (AUSTRALIA)

The Northgreen Cafe is a nice little cafe that I went to everyday last week in the Chatswood (a northern suburb of Sydney). It was my go to place for a morning coffee as I was staying at a serviced apartment, which meant that I didn't have any coffee being served up for breakfast!

So, it was just by accident that I found this place... it was on the walk between the rehearsal venue and the apartment... and when you are desperate for a coffee in the morning, you just stop into the first place that you see and hope that it is good. If it is decent, then you keep coming back... and if not, you keep trying your luck every day with a different place!

Thankfully, Northgreen was a decent coffee the first time around... so, I was lucky to hit the jackpot on the first try. However, Australia is pretty good with the coffee culture... and it can be actually quite difficult (although not impossible) to get a BAD coffee!

The Space

I like the decor style of Northgreen Cafe. If you couldn't see outside, you could be quite easily mistaken in thinking that this was a sort of beach cafe! Of course, we are in one of the busier transport hubs of Sydney... but the place is well set back from the busy street, and right next to the Chatswood library.

There is a spacious indoor area, and I had a particularly favourite couch in the corner of the room! However, if you wanted there was covered seating in the terrace outside. I caught this on photo on a particularly good day in the beginning of the week... but after this day, it was raining crazy hard and I was scared that sitting outside would end up being a very very wet affair!

The Menu

I'm afraid that I didn't get photos of the lunch menu... even though I dropped in for the lunch break every day, I wasn't in the mood for a full lunch, and I would order a coffee and something little and sweet from the glass display at the counter.

The Food

Exhibit A... a very nice lemon tart. I was a bit in a mixed mind about this... I enjoyed the lemon part, but I found that the pastry was a bit soggy and not really to my taste. I would have preferred something with a bit more texture to it as well.

Plus, the cream... meh... it looks nice, but it was that hard and very buttery kind of cream. I had one bit of it, but eventually scraped the cream off. I know that everyone has their own taste in cream... but yep, this was more for show than for eating!

... well... the coffee! I'm getting back into the habit of ordering the good old Australian Flat White! Northgreen excels here... decent cup of coffee, and at a decent temperature as well. I find that there are many places that do coffees badly tend to make them crazily hot. If I get those ones, they go straight into the bin. Plus, they tend to be way oversized as well...

On the next day... I ordered a different dessert plate. Lychee and Strawberry tart... topped with a white chocolate wafer and strawberry mousse. Yep, this was the one to get! It become my go to lunch plate for the week! It has fruit... so, I think it is healthy!

The Experience

I loved this place... the staff were friendly, and there wasn't a huge crowd in the times that I was there...even during the lunch hours. What I liked best was that you could just sit and have your coffee and cake... and just be left alone with your thoughts and food. No harassing to check if you wanted anything more or if everything was okay. I like it like that! I've ordered... now leave me alone!
