Sushi Fresh: Canberra, AUSTRALIA

This little eatery/restaurant/takeaway was a pretty unusual find... and quite a welcome one! Sushi Fresh is a little Japanese food place that is situated right in the middle of the industrial area of Canberra, Fyshwick. This is where all the car and tool places are... along with fireworks and the local legalised brothels as well. And it is all within easy sight of the local international airport as well... so, it isn't really the sort of place where you would expect to find a decent feed.

So, it was with some surprise that I found a place that served decent enough Japanese food, both cooked and sushi. Mmmmmm... makes me hungry just thinking about it!

The Space

So, the space is decked out very much in a Japanese style... I'm not entirely sure if the owner is Japanese... actually, I definitely know that he isn't Japanese, but it is possible that his partner is. Regardless of heritage, they still serve up some pretty decent Japanese food, and in the end, that is all that matters!

There is a little bit of seating on the inside and on the terrace... but most of the traffic will be tradies and local workers just grabbing a little bite to go.

The Menu

There is a good selection of sushi (on display in the food cabinets), and more interestingly to me, the cooked foods. The Combo meals and the Donburis have been pretty decent... and for Australia, relatively inexpensive as well. I think that the next time, I will give the Udon and Ramen a bit of a go... but I feel like once I have found something that I like, it is really hard to try and order something else!

The Food

There is nothing better than getting a warm meal in the middle of a day of teaching... and that is why I'm so happy that I've found this place. My main complaint about the meals, is that they tend to be a bit too heavy on the sauce... and there could be a bit more variety in the little side dishes. There is just a little bit of seaweed salad... and that is it. Perhaps next time, I should check to see if he combo meal offers a bit more interest.

Otherwise, the rice is just right (yes... Asian people tend to be quite picky about rice...)... and the chicken katsu is nice a crispy... as long as you can rescue it from the flood of sauce in time!

Whether you eat in or take away, the serving dishes are the same.... in the takeaway plastic trays.

The Experience

Well... it might not be the BEST Japanese food on offer... but it is definitely the best in the area, and it isn't too shabby on the whole. So, that is definitely good enough when you just need a quick warm lunch. I probably should explore around a bit more... but for the moment, the staff and owner are friendly, the prices are low enough, and the food is filling and warming. So, everything that I need to keep me going...

... plus, given the area, I'm sort of a bit too scared to go exploring too far!
