Apollo Bay Bakery (Apollo Bay, Australia): A Tasteem Review

One of the most iconic landmarks on the Australian mainland are the Twelve Apostles, which is a several hours drive from Melbourne on the Southern Australian Coast. Needless to say, if you are making that trip, then you will need a pitstop for food and a toilet break! Especially if you are travelling with kids...

... however, the same idea holds true for gigantic busloads of tourists as well! Apollo Bay is pretty well situated between Melbourne and The Pinnicles on the scenic Great Ocean Road... so, it appears to be a natural place for people to stop and rest. It is no surprise that there are seasonal restaurants and bakeries that have grown with the demand... but are they any good?

The Space

The imaginatively named Apollo Bay Bakery is a bakery located in Apollo Bay... no misleading advertising there! You can already see from the outside that it is set up especially for the tourist trade... in particular, the lucrative China tourist trade! All the menus and signage have Chinese equivalents... it's a little strange to see, but no different to English translations of menus and signage that you see all throughout Europe.

If that didn't give it away, a pretty tacky looking giant Koala on the outside might have clued you in....

The eating area on the inside is pretty limited... however, the bakery is situated on the foreshore of the Southern Ocean... so, for this day (in the middle of a crazily blustery winter's day...) we chose to eat outside... not sure who made that decision... but they will famously go down in infamy... as you will se from later photos shots....

The Menu

The big claim to fame of the Apollo Bakery is their Scallop Pie.. apparently, this is the home of that particular pie... which I have never heard of. It does sound a bit interesting... a fish pie... I've had some nice ones before.. but scallops?

Australia is pretty famous for it's pies though, so it is no surprise that there is a special frozen section for that particular delicacy!

When I was younger... my go to meal would be a roast beef/pork roll dripping in gravy... warm and comforting (something that would have been really welcome on this day...). However, as I've grown older... this sort of greasy food agrees less well with my stomach... and as I was the main driver for our car this day... I decided to play it safe and avoid the yummy yummy greasy goodness!

Unfortunately, the same thing applied to pies...

So, it was the cold sandwiches and rolls that were the order of the day... sigh, I wish I was young again and could mistreat my digestive system without too much to worry about afterwards!

The Food

Remember how I had mentioned the cold blustery winds? Well, blustery was a bit of an understatement... near gale force was a bit closer to the truth... after opening the bag for two familes... we had lots of food and wrappings go flying everywhere!

These were some of the few survivors... half of my crumbed chicken sandwich and a veggie burger for my wife. The roll had gone flying and some seagulls made it to it before I did... hence, the missing section... but I was hungry, so I ate the rest of it (after tearing off a little bit of the end so that I wasn't kissing seagull.... ).

Both bun and sandwich were okay... nothing amazing... but you could get much worse but I really wished I had a pie or a hot roast roll....

Thankfully, my consolation prize for dessert was an ANZAC biscuit... this is another Australian specialty... something that I don't find anywhere else... it is a sweet oat biscuit... and I hadn't had one for years and years! I should learn how to make it at home.... taking a bite of this was just heaven!

The Experience

Well... I guess you can't blame the weather on the bakery!.... the bakery is a decent place for a quick stop to get something warm to eat, however, you really need to be lucky with the timing.

As I had mentioned before, you are also in the pitstop of multiple coachloads of Chinese tourists.... when those coaches unload... well, good luck ordering, the place is swamped! Thankfully, it disperses pretty quickly if you are patient (or if you avoided the lunch rush..), but you have to hope that the leaving of one crowd doesn't herald the start of another!

To be honest, we ended up choosing this place becuase our preferred place wasn't open in the non-peak winter season. It's okay, but nothing better than other bakeries that you would find all through Australia... I wouldn't make a special stop for this place. However, if you do find yourself going to visit the Pinnicles on your way from Melbourne... this could be a nice place to stop by!
