A weekend in Paris - Fluctuat nec mergitur [EN/FR]

Before starting my new semester, I’ve been for a weekend in the capital of France, the city of Love, the city of Light ... Paris. Another departure on a sudden impulse for an express weekend and that's why I looked for the cheapest transport possible, so I used the bus. Since 2015 in France, with the so-called "Bus Macron" law (in reference to Emmanuel Macron, then Minister of the Economy) have been liberalized the bus lines, companies such as Ouibus, Flixbus, Isilines, Eurolines, etc have developed. And even if it is sometimes certain rides are long, it is quite practical.

Avant de recommencer mon semestre, je suis partie un week-end dans la capitale de la France, la ville de l’Amour, la ville Lumière… Paris. Encore un départ sur un coup de tête pour un week-end express et c’est pour cela que j’ai cherché le moyen de transport le moins cher possible, j’ai donc utilisé le bus. Depuis 2015 en France, avec la loi dites des “Bus Macron” (en référence à Emmanuel Macron, alors ministre de l’Économie) ont été libéralisées les lignes d’autocars, ce sont ainsi développées les lignes Ouibus, Flixbus, Isilines, Eurolines, etc. Et même si c’est parfois certains trajets deviennent longs, c’est assez pratique.

I arrived a little before 11am at La Défense, which is the business district of the Metropole of Greater Paris recognizable with its large buildings, including one forming square (empty in the middle). And this is also where I met my friend and we took the metro to go to the neighborhood of Levallois-Perret to drop my stuff.

Je suis arrivée un peu avant 11h à La Défense, qui est le quartier d’affaire de la Métropole du Grand Paris reconnaissable avec ses grands immeubles, dont un formant un carré vide en son milieu. Et c’est là aussi que j’ai retrouvé mon ami et nous avons pris le métro pour nous rendre à Levallois-Perret pour y déposer mes affaires.

For lunch and as we did not want to waste too much time, we went to a restaurant not far from my friend’s place, La Piazzetta. It’s an Italian restaurant, not fantastic but with many options, good food and fast service.

Pour déjeuner et comme nous ne voulions pas perdre trop de temps, nous sommes allés dans un petit restaurant au coin de sa rue, La Piazzetta. Restaurant aux spécialités italiennes, pas fantastique mais choix varié, la cuisine est bonne et le service rapide.

The early afternoon was spent visiting the Marmottan Monet Museum, located in the 16th arrondissement. The building of the current museum is a former hunting lodge, bought in 1882 by Jules Marmottan, whose son, Paul Marmottan, has turned into a mansion. At his death, he bequeathed the property to the Académie des Beaux-Arts to make a museum, opened for the first time in 1934. The interior is beautiful and I must confess with adore the floor!

Le début d’après-midi a été consacré à la visite du Musée Marmottan Monet, situé dans le 16ᵉ arrondissement. La bâtisse de l’actuel musée est un ancien pavillon de chasse, racheté en 1882 par Jules Marmottan et que le fils, Paul Marmottan, transformera un hôtel particulier. À sa mort, il légua la propriété à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts qui en fera un musée, ouvert pour la première fois en 1934. L’intérieur est magnifique et je dois avouer avec adoré le sol !

Regarding exhibitions, in addition to the magnificent works of Monet, and until February 10, 2019, it is possible to admire some sixty works exclusively from private collections around the world. For lovers of art or not, but especially to make you want to go, there are masterpieces, signed among others by Monet, Degas, Caillebotte, Renoir, Rodin, Camille Claudel, Seurat, Signac, Émile Bernard, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Redon, Vuillard, Bonnard, Derain, Vlaminck or Matisse ...
I could enter without waiting and have a free ticket, my friend having worked for the museum (Lucky me!), Otherwise the entry costs 12 € (reduction to 8.50 € possible on production of proof of eligibility).

Concernant les expositions, en plus des oeuvres magnifique de Monet, et jusqu’au 10 février 2019, il est possible d’admirer une soixantaine d’oeuvres provenant exclusivement de collections particulières du monde entier. Pour les amoureux d’art ou non, mais surtout pour vous donner envie d’y aller, on retrouve des chefs-d’oeuvre, signés entre autres par Monet, Degas, Caillebotte, Renoir, Rodin, Camille Claudel, Seurat, Signac, Émile Bernard, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Redon, Vuillard, Bonnard, Derain, Vlaminck ou Matisse…
J’ai eu la chance de ne pas avoir à atteindre pour entrer et de ne pas payer mon billet, mon ami ayant travaillé pour le musée (Lucky me!), sinon l’entrée coûte 12€ (réduction à 8.50€ possible sur présentation d’un justificatif).

To continue our day, already well underway, we went to say hello to the Iron Lady of Paris ... The Eiffel Tower! And I'll unveil a little secret to have it (almost) just for you and make pretty pictures: go to Avenue des Camoens! You will have a beautiful view of the Tower, you will also have the charm of a Parisian street and very few tourists. And I could do a little photo shoot.

Pour continuer notre journée, déjà bien entamée, nous sommes partis rendre visite à la Dame de Fer de Paris… La Tour Eiffel ! Et je vais vous dévoiler un petit secret pour l’avoir (presque) rien que pour vous et faire de jolies photos : rendez vous Avenue des Camoëns ! Vous aurez alors une très belle vue sur la Tour, vous aurez aussi le charme d’une rue parisienne et très très peu de touristes. Et j’ai eu le droit à une petite séance photo

Of course we came a little more closer by going to the Trocadero. The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel and built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Note that it had to be dismantled just after the exhibition but it was decided otherwise. It is today the symbol of the French capital and one of the most visited monuments in the world.

Bien sûr nous nous sommes approchés un peu plus en nous rendant au Trocadéro. La Tour Eiffel fut dessinée par Gustave Eiffel et construite pour l’Exposition Universelle de 1889. À noter qu’elle devait être démontée juste après l’exposition mais il en a été décidé autrement. Elle est aujourd’hui le symbole de la capitale française et l’un des monuments les plus visités au monde.

To get to the last place of our day we took the metro. I must admit that when I was a child, it was a nightmare for me, I did not understand the lines and I was afraid of getting lost... And then one day I had to take it alone, so I was absolutely stressed, but I did not get lost and since, the Paris metro has (almost) no secret for me!

Pour nous rendre au dernier lieu de notre journée nous avons emprunté le métro. Je dois bien avouer que étant enfant, c’était pour moi un vrai cauchemar, je ne comprenais rien aux lignes et j’avais peur de me perdre… Et puis un jour il a fallu que je l’emprunte seule, alors j’étais absolument stressée, mais je ne me suis pas perdue et depuis, le métro parisien n’a (presque) plus de secret pour moi !

We briefly went through the Villa Léandre, a small impasse in the 18th district build in the Anglo-Saxon style ... A little trip in my trip. You can also enjoy the touch of humor of one of the inhabitants, that of the number 10 of the street who laid a plaque "Downing Street", Prime Minister are you there?

Nous sommes brièvement passés par la Villa Léandre, une petite impasse dans le 18ème arrondissement au style anglo-saxon… Un petit voyage dans mon voyage. Vous pouvez aussi apprécier la petite touche d’humour d’un des habitants, celui du numéro 10 de la rue qui a posé une plaque “Downing Street”, Prime Minister êtes-vous là ?

And finally, this day of visit ended in the district of Montmartre, with its famous stairs, its painters, its caricaturists, its sight and its Basilica of the Sacré Coeur. This religious building, whose construction took 48 years (1875-1923), is called the "National Vow" (following the defeat against the Prussian armies as a divine punishment). The Basilica, built on the shape of a Greek cross houses many statues, sculptures but also a crypt. It is an emblematic place of the city ... Be careful to your stuff, the place is famous for its pickpockets. And then, it was time to return to the apartment, the evening was calm, I was a little tired.

Et enfin, cette journée de visite s’est finie dans le quartier de Montmartre, avec ses fameux escaliers, ses peintres, ses caricaturistes, sa vue et sa Basilique du Sacré-Coeur. Cet édifice religieux, dont la construction a nécessité 48 ans (1875-1923), est dit du “Voeu National” (suite à la défaite contre les armées prussiennes vue comme une punition divine). La Basilique, construite sur la forme d’une croix grecque abrite de nombreuses statues, des sculptures mais aussi une crypte. C’est un lieu emblématique de la ville… Attention tout de même à vos effets personnels, le lieu est réputé pour ses pickpockets. Et enfin, ce fut l’heure du retour à l’appartement, la soirée a été calme, j’étais un peu fatiguée.

Wake up on Sunday morning, make up and let’s go for a brunch (I will never get tired of it I think!). We stopped at the Kozy, located at 46 rue Lafayette, just at the exit of the metro station Le Peletier. The café offers a brunch formula for 23 euros with classic options but that corresponds to the idea and the desire that we have for a brunch. I took pancakes, an avocado toast and a smoothie, which I do not remember what was inside, but it was good and cool thing, if you do not finish you can ask for a “To go” (Small negative point... tumbler and straw were in plastic... they can do better!).

Réveil tranquille le dimanche matin, préparation et c’est parti pour aller bruncher (je ne me lasserai jamais je crois !). C’est ainsi que nous avons fait halte au Kozy, situé au 46 rue Lafayette, à la sortie du métro Le Peletier. Le café propose une formule brunch à 23 euros avec un choix assez classique mais qui correspond à l’idée et l’envie qu’on a pour un brunch. J’ai pris des pancakes, un toast à l’avocat et un smoothie, dont je ne me souviens pas la composition, mais il était bon et en plus, si vous ne finissez pas vous pouvez demander à l’emporter (Petit point négatif… gobelet et paille en plastique… peut mieux faire !).

It was then time for me to catch my bus for going back home. I mostly slept during all the journey… as usual! I must admit that I followed a lot of the touristic Paris and I did not really show you the hidden treasures of Paname, but for an express weekend I especially wanted to see the iconic monuments.

Ce fut ensuite l’heure pour moi de prendre mon bus pour rentrer à la maison. J’ai presque dormi durant tout le trajet… Comme d’habitude ! Je dois avouer que j’ai beaucoup suivi le parcours touristique de Paris et que je ne vous ai pas vraiment montré les trésors cachés de Paname, mais pour un week-end express j’ai surtout voulu voir les monuments emblématiques.
