Again To The Museum

Again To The Museum

November 2019 · 5 min read · Iași

Visiting a museum can be not only instructive, useful to better understand how human civilization has evolved over time, but this is also because most of the time their museums and exhibits refer to the past. Visiting a museum with close friends is also a form of socializing and you can feel as good as at a theater show or as you go to the restaurant. The association of these activities may seem forced and abnormal but, in my opinion, if you feel good in a place, be it the opera or football stadium then it means that you have chosen well.

I started a series of presentations of the museums hosted by the Palace of Culture in Iasi. Many and well done, interesting ... for those interested. I now continue with a brief presentation of the History Museum and several rooms in the palace.

I must inform any readers who have not read my postings so far that the city of Iasi is in Romania. Little known outside the country until now, in recent years it has begun to be increasingly sought by tourists attracted by the history and beauty of its architectural monuments. Attracted by the Romanian lifestyle, good food, and wines, relatively cheap compared to Western Europe.

Any visitor to this city first sees the Palace of Culture, a famous building from now on throughout Europe, being considered among the first five castles as beauty, viewed at night. Some technical data about the building: it has an area of 36,000 square meters and 298 rooms. Impressive, isn't it?

Even the image of the day is not to be rejected, but also very beautiful. In this place, I will visit the History Museum, together with my wife and a good friend, Doru.

This time we were fortunate to have a guide who led us to the museum and told us a lot of interesting things about exhibits. It was a joy, especially since the guide, a well-known historian, was very attached to his work and gladly shared his knowledge.

At first I received explanations and information about the palace. This palace was built over the ruins of the Royal Court of Iasi (documentary attested from 1434). At the last renovation of the palace ten years ago, the builders have chosen a very interesting method to let see and parts of the old court building. They made the glass floors to see through them the ruins of the old palace.

When there is someone who knows the whole history and who is willing to tell others, this is our guide. We asked a lot of questions. She told us in particular about the role of fortified residence of the old royal palace, always subjected to military assaults, especially from the Ottoman empire and the Tatars, descendants of Genghis-Han.

Of course, the discussion about fortifications and fighting inevitably leads to weapons. These are, in fact, the most exhibited in the museum. It is also normal, as a result of the battles, many weapons are lost and so the archaeologists had what to find during the excavations.

Swords, guns and knives are more of interest to men. Fortunately, I also found something for my wife's interest. A reconstruction of a tent used in military campaigns by the Turks. Quite small, in my opinion, but upholstered with carpets. These were to the taste of my wife, probably would have liked it in the living room.

In the end, I was surprised to see that the ammunition used for the guns was made of stone. Stone balls!

We leave the museum and, at the invitation of our guide, we go to see two important rooms in the palace. The first one is called "Voievozilor Hall". It is a hall built in medieval style and has painted portraits of all the princes who ruled Moldova.

An even more interesting and beautiful hall is called the Henri Coanda Hall. Henri Coanda was one of the most important Romanian inventors, with inventions in the field of aviation and the Coanda effect. The panels in this room were made from a special cement, invented by Coanda. This cement perfectly imitates the wood!

Of course, again a lot of interest and many questions about how it was built and about the paintings on the walls.

This room has been used for a long time as a courtroom.

Before leaving this wonderful palace we walk a bit through several rooms and want to see outside, through the large windows. The position of the palace is excellent, in the middle of the city, in the part most visited by tourists. The boulevard Stefan cel Mare si Sfant, which leaves in front of the palace is pedestrianized for the most part and includes some of the most important places in the city. These are: The Church of the Three Hierarchs; Metropolitan Cathedral; Roznovanu Palace (City Hall) and National Theater.

This was one of the many museums hosted by this palace. Museums are an objective for all those who visit cities and foreign countries.

The city of Iasi, located in the north-east of Romania, and is definitely a place worth visiting. It's not just my opinion, it's just a finding. Every day I met dozens of tourists and please, believe me, they all seemed very satisfied.
