Boat People in Shaoguan

Boat People in Shaoguan

April 2019 · 4 min read · Guangdong
After I finished my stories about the recent trip to China, I can finally get back to the huge backlog about the 11 years I lived there. This time I'll show you some pics about people living on boats in Shaoguan.

These images are from 2007. Back then, there were quite a number of these boats. Mostly rather poor people lived on these boats, many of them fishing on the rivers of Shaoguan. In this case it was the Zhenshui River, pretty close to Shaoguan's city centre.

The seemingly poorest had this kind of houseboat. Looks like they were made from scrap they found lying around. The smaller boats were used for getting around or, mostly if they had some kind of shelter, for fishing.

For some reason, even though they were obviously quite poor, some of them had dogs as pets, as you can see above. At least, I don't think they needed any guard dogs. Some of them also kept chickens on their boats:Aus irgendeinem Grund hatten einige Hunde als Haustiere, trotz ihrer Armut.

The blue houseboats were of those who were a bit better off. But in the next image, you can see the best of the boats, on which they built a proper house. Not blue.

Although they were poor, they had electricity. So, it can't have been too bad. (Anyway, if you're too bad off, you wouldn't keep a dog. You would eat it.) On several boats, they were drying food:Obwohl sie arm waren, hatten sie doch Strom.

Either vegetables, as seen above, or fish heads, beside a fishing net, beside clothes:Entweder Gemüse, wie oben, oder Fischköpfe, neben einem Netz, neben Kleidern:

Cooking was done on rather primitive ovens:Gekocht wurde auf recht primitiven Öfen:

One problem of this lifestyle (at least back then) was hygiene. The boats were obviously not connected to the sewer system. So, most - er - refuse landed in the water. Though some seem to have done their business at certain hotspots:Ein Problem dieses Lebensstils (zumindest damals) war die Hygiene.

Maybe hygiene was one reason why you don't see these houseboats anymore. Perhaps the city of Shaoguan told them to bugger off & now they moved their business to the countryside. Also possible that they somehow made enough money to move onto land.

In recent years I haven't seen any of these houseboats in Shaoguan. There were still a very small number of smaller boats, apparently with people living on them, though. When I was there this year, I didn't have time to go to the countryside, so I don't know whether the houseboats still exist.
Some more pics from 2007:Noch ein paar Bilder aus 2007:
