Dongguan 纯阳古观 - Chunyang Ancient Temple / Historischer Tempel

March 2019 · 4 min read · Guancheng Subdistrict
After finishing my article about the Grand Parade in Patras, I can finally get to the backlog of the last days of my recent trip to China. Actually, it's more or less just one day, but I was quite active on that day. Let's begin with a temple.

I wanted to go to an older part of the district of Wanjiang. On the way there I came across this Taoist temple, called 纯阳古观 (chúnyáng gǔguān ~ Chunyang ancient temple).Ich wollte einen älteren Teil von Wanjiang besuchen.

It's located in the Wanjiang Park near Wanjiang River. Not much of a park, just a big square with some trees & grass. Was man in China so Park nennt.

Contrary to what the name suggests, the temple is not very old. It was built in 1993. Well, "rebuilt". There was an older temple, stemming from the Ming Dynasty, but it was destroyed, as usual. Couldn't find out when it was destroyed, though. I doubt that it looked very much like the one they "rebuilt" there.

According to Baidu Baike, it is the only Taoist temple open to the public in the Dongguan urban area. I doubt that, too. Cantonese are a quite religious bunch & I would be surprised if there weren't other smaller Taoist temples around.

Despite being fairly new, there are some nice features to this temple.

Since there were almost no people, I ventured inside to take some pictures without disturbing anyone. The guardians didn't bother me...Da nur sehr wenige Leute dort waren, habe ich mich mal hineingewagt, um einige Bilder zu machen, ohne jemanden zu stören. Die Wächter haben mich nicht gehindert ...

Being an actual place of worship, there was no entrance fee. Maybe I should have given a small offer, but I didn't think of it.Da es ein aktiver Tempel ist, wurde kein Eintrittsgeld verlangt.

Inside there was nothing special, just another temple. But very well maintained for China. In most temples, there is a lot of dust on the statues & figurines. Not so much here ...Im Tempel gab es keine echten Besonderheiten; ein Tempel wie jeder andere.

If you're in the area, anyway, I suppose it's worth a visit. This is not a tourist trap, people actually worship here. There are not many monks (maybe 5), so you can't expect a lot of activity. But it's a proper temple, & if you want a real life experience instead of some touristy crap, that's the way to go.Wenn man sowieso gerade in der Gegend ist, ist der Tempel doch einen Besuch wert, denke ich.
