Shaoguan - Cycling in the countryside / Umgebungsradeln # 10

End of March 2007, this time no golf course. Today's post is more focused on the fields.
Es ist Ende März 2007, mal ohne Golfplatz. Heute geht es eher um die Felder.
Many small farmers still used centuries-old methods to work the fields. Horribly hard work, I suppose. Why did humans ever give up hunting & gathering?
Viele Kleinbauern nutzten damals noch jahrhundertealte Methoden, um ihre Felder zu bearbeiten. Grauenhaft harte Arbeit, nehme ich an. Warum gaben Menschen jemals das Jagen & Sammeln auf?
All that hard work & then your harvest is eaten by a bunch of hungry spotted munias (Lonchura punctulata). They look very similar to African silverbills, of which I had some as pets when I was young.
All die harte Arbeit & dann wird die Ernte von einer Horde hungriger Muskatfinken gefressen. Sie sehen Silberschnäbelchen sehr ähnlich. Davon hatte ich mal einige als Haustiere, als ich noch jung war.
For what I remember, these 2 species are also very similar in behaviour. As pets, I can only recommend them. They have a very nice character, are very peaceful & sociable. But you should keep them in groups. The more, the marrier. For farmers, though, they can be a pain in the arse.
Soweit ich mich entsinne, sind diese beiden Arten auch sehr ähnlich in ihrem Verhalten. Kann sie als Haustiere nur empfehlen. Sie haben einen sehr netten Charakter, sind sehr friedlich & sozial. Man sollte sie aber in Gruppen halten. Je mehr, desto besser. Für Bauern sind sie jedoch eine Qual.

I'm not much into #peoplephotography, but this situation just looked nice. Hopefully, the kid won't have to toil in the fields like the guy above. Speaking of hard work:
Leute fotografier ich nicht unbedingt gerne, aber diese Situation sah nett aus. Man darf hoffen, daß das Kind nicht auf den Feldern schuften muß wie der Typ oben. Apropos harte Arbeit:
This ant obviously was working hard, too. Extending the nest, it was bringing out some earth. A bit further, still close to the village, there was another body floating in a pond.
Diese Ameise war auch schwer beschäftigt. Sie brachte Erde nach draußen, die beim Nestausbau angefallen war. Ein Stück weiter, immer noch sehr nah am Dorf, fand ich mal wieder einen im Wasser treibenden Kadaver.
In the reflection you can see that the houses are very close. Don't really understand why noone in China seems to care about dead animals in the water. I thought, they actually poison the water if it's just a small standing body of water.
In der Reflexion sieht man die naheliegenden Häuser. Keine Ahnung, warum tote Tiere im Wasser in China niemanden kümmern. Dachte, die verseuchen das Wasser, wenn es kleine stehende Gewässer sind.
This is a of mock strawberry (duchesnea indica) growing in the wild in Canton. IIRC, in China they are sold as dried fruits, but under a different name. Quite tasty, but I don't remember what the name is. Anyway, I always thought, they were the result of these flowers:
Hierbei handelt es sich um eine wildwachsende Scheinerdbeere. Soweit ich weiß, werden die in China als Trockenfrüchte verkauft. Recht lecker, kann mich aber nicht mehr an den Namen erinnern, unter dem sie verkauft werden. Hatte immer gedacht, sie wären das Resultat dieser Blüten:
But this is some kind of mimosoideae, an unrelated species. Both plants can be found around Shaoguan, growing in a similar environment. The leaves are very different, though, & the flowers of mock strawberries are small & yellow:
Aber dies ist eine Art der Mimosengewächse, ganz andere Spezies. Beide Pflanzen findet man um Shaoguan, in ähnlicher Umgebung. Die Blätter sind sehr unterschiedlich & die Blüten der Scheinerdbeere sind klein & gelb:
One of the many things I liked about Canton was the abundance of big wasps.
Eines der vielen Dinge, die mir an Kanton gefielen, war die Vielfalt der großen Wespen.
This is probably some kind of hornet, which kind, I don't know. It was obviously interested in tree sap.
Dies ist vermutlich eine Art Hornisse, aber keine Ahnung welche Art. Sie schien am Baumsaft interessiert zu sein.
It was seemingly the time of major field work. Not only the rice paddies were tended to. The fields were full of people & virtually no machines to be seen.
Offenbar war es die Zeit zur Erledigung der Feldarbeit. Nicht nur die Reisfelder wurden bestellt. Auch andere Felder wurden bearbeitet, fast immer ohne Maschinen.
This is the kind of poor farmer who can only afford a simple grave like this:

This is very similar to the ones I showed you recently. Only very poor people have these simple earth mounds. If possible, Chinese would build a proper tomb. In one of my next posts, you will see how that looks.
Dieses ist sehr ähnlich denen, die ich vor kurzem schon zeigte. Nur sehr arme Leute haben diese einfachen Erdhügel. Wenn möglich, bauen Chinesen eine komplette Grabstätte. In einem meiner nächsten Beiträge kann man sehen, wie das aussieht.
For now, let's go back to the watery side of things. The rice paddies, fish ponds & streams provided a good environment for all kinds of water animals. Couldn't find out which species that is. They appear to need clear water & I found them only in a few places.
Jetzt erstmal zurück zur wässrigen Seite der Dinge. Die Reisfelder, Fischteiche & Bäche ergaben eine gutes Lebensumfeld für alle Arten von Wassertieren. Konnte leider nicht herausfinden, um welche Art Fisch es sich handelt. Die Fische brauchen offenbar klares Wasser & ich fand sie nur selten.
In this case they shared the rice paddy with a dragonfly larva, so they had to be rather careful. It was just as big as the fish. But at least, there were no frogs around.
In diesem Falle teilten sie sich das Wasser mit einer Libellenlarve, & mußten dementsprechend vorsichtig sein. Sie war genauso groß wie die Fische. Wenigstens waren aber keine Frösche in der Nähe.
They were lurking at another pond.
Sie lauerten an einem anderen Teich.
This one is probably a Butler's rice frog (Microhyla butleri). It's tiny, as you can judge from the thing it's hiding under. Yep, you see right: it's a styrofoam food box.
Hierbei handelt es sich wahrscheinlich um einen Butlers Reisfrosch (Microhyla butleri, kein deutscher Wikipediaeintrag). Er ist winzig, wie man an dem Ding sehen kann, worunter er sich versteckt. Jau, es handelt sich tatsächlich um einen Styroporbehälter.
This one was just a few meters away. It's perhaps a northern tree frog (Polypedates mutus), but I'm not sure. The pictures I found show a great variety in appearance.
Dieser Frosch befand sich ein paar Meter weiter. Das ist vielleicht ein Nördlicher Baumfrosch (Polypedates mutus), aber sicher bin ich nicht. Die Bilder, die ich fand, zeigten allerlei Variation im Aussehen.
Back at the university, I found the above grasshopper. & at home a sewer gnat was waiting for me. At the time, this was also new to me. But by now I have seen them everywhere I went. (Maybe I bring them with me somehow.)
Zurück an der Uni fand ich diesen Grashüpfer. & zuhause wartete eine Schmetterlingsmücke auf mich. Damals war so ein Viech auch noch neu für mich. Aber jetzt habe ich sie so ziemlich überall gesehen, wo ich war. (Vielleicht verbreite ich sie irgendwie.)
Then there was this rather peculiar spider:
Dann war da diese recht speziell aussehende Spinne:
In spite of its appearance, I couldn't find out, which species it is. After I had taken the pictures I put it outside on the balcony. Don't think I ever saw it again.
Trotz des Aussehens konnte ich nicht herausfinden, um welche Spezies es sich handelt. Nachdem ich die Bilder gemacht hatte, setzte ich die Spinne auf den Balkon. Glaube nicht, daß ich sie jemals wiedersah.
