Nachdem wir einige Stunden im & am Seeschlachtmuseum verbracht hatten, fuhren wir endlich ins eigentliche Humen.
The first thing I noticed there was the smell of the canals. There are quite a few canals in Humen, & back then in 2007 the water was almost black & stank horribly. Don't really know how to describe that smell, but sometimes cheap leather has a hint of it. I suppose, the prevalent textile industry was responsible. (The smell improved over the years, until 2017, since then it seems to have deteriorated again.) The second thing I noticed was the distance between the residential buildings.
Als erstes fiel mir der Gestank der Kanäle auf. Davon gibt es in Humen so einige, & 2007 war das Wasser darin fast schwarz & stank erbärmlich. Der Geruch ist schwer zu beschreiben, aber billiges Leder hat manchmal einen Hauch davon. Nehme an, die dortige Textilindustrie war verantwortlich. (Im Lauf der Jahre nahm der Geruch ab, aber seit 2017 scheint es wieder schlimmer geworden zu sein.) Als zweites fielen mir die Abstände zwischen den Gebäuden auf.
Up to then I had only known the city centre of Shaoguan, with the normal densely built-up area, or the countryside, with a lot of space around the houses. But for semi-rural areas, the typical distance between buildings is actually 1-2 metres. So, you could - if there were no bars - shake your neighbour's hand from the window.
Bis dahin kannte ich nur das Stadtzentrum Shaoguans mit seiner normalen, dichten Bebauung, oder das ländliche Shaoguan mit viel Platz um die Gebäude. Jedoch ist die übliche Distanz für halb-ländliche Gegenden 1-2 Meter. Also könnte man - wären da nicht die Gitter - den Nachbarn durchs Fenster die Hand reichen.
Also noticeable, though not uncommon in China, was the dirt. If they can get away with it, people just throw their garbage out of the window.
Auch bemerkenswert, wenn auch nicht ungewöhnlich in China, war der Dreck. Wenn sie damit durchkommen, schmeißen die Leute ihren Müll einfach aus dem Fenster.
A surprisingly large gecko was one of the first to greet me in Humen.
Ein überraschend großer Gecko war eine meiner ersten Begegnungen in Humen.
The above was a typical scene in semi-rural China in 2007. Not everyone had a TV-set, so in the evenings people gathered around shops whose owners tried to attract customers this way. Nowadays, this is not so common anymore. Usually, only older people gather there, & not so much because they don't have a TV, but for socialising.
Was man oben sieht, war 2007 im eher ländlichen Raum Chinas eine typische Szene. Nicht jeder hatte einen Fernseher, also versammelte man sich abends vor Läden, deren Besitzer auf diese Weise Kunden anlocken wollten. Heutzutage sieht man das nicht mehr so oft. Üblicherweise versammeln sich dort nur noch Ältere, & nicht, weil sie keinen Fernseher hätten, sondern um mal unter die Leute zu kommen.
Here you see my then-girlfriend at her favourite activity: winning in mahjong. Mahjong is still very, very common in China (& it's not the Memory-like game which in the West is sometimes called mahjong, read the link). It's the favourite pastime in China, much more popular than Chinese chess, for what I can see.
Hier sieht man meine damalige Freundin bei ihrer Lieblingsbeschäftigung: Gewinnen beim Mah-Jongg. Das Spiel ist in China immer noch sehr weit verbreitet (& es handelt sich nicht um eine Memory-Variante, die im Westen auch manchmal Mah-Jongg genannt wird, siehe Link). Dort ist es die beliebteste Freizeitbeschäftigung, wesentlich beliebter als chinesisches Schach, soweit ich das sehe.
These are not homeless. If you come across such a scene in China, you can safely assume that they are workers on a break or just waiting for the next job. Chinese use every chance to take a nap. You can find sleepers anywhere, from a police car to a shop's check-out.
Das sind keine Obdachlosen. Wer sowas in China sieht, kann ruhigen Gewissens davon ausgehen, daß es sich um Arbeiter bei der Pause oder wartend auf neue Aufträge handelt. Chinesen nutzen jede Möglichkeit für ein Nickerchen. Dementsprechend findet man Schläfer überall, von einem Polizeiauto bis zur Ladenkasse.
All over Dongguan, but particularly in Humen, there are these little workshops producing textiles. The textile industry has made Humen big & it's still important there. Although, recently it seems there are more workers than work.
Überall in Dongguan, aber v.a. in Humen findet man diese kleinen textilproduzierenden Betriebe. Die Textilindustrie hat Humen großgemacht & ist immer noch wichtig, obwohl es in letzter Zeit mehr Arbeiter als Arbeit zu geben scheint.
This is the major square of Humen, called Tai Ping Square, with another Opium War memorial. Funny, though, that Humen is one of the few places where I have seen people still use similar opium pipes. What they were actually smoking, though, I don't know.
Dies ist der zentrale Platz von Humen, genannt Taipingplatz, & darauf ein weiteres Mahnmal für die Opiumkriege. Lustigerweise ist Humen einer der wenigen Orte, wo ich noch Leute mit solchen Opiumpfeifen gesehen habe. Weiß aber nicht, was sie damit rauchten.
Privacy with Chinese characteristics in a Chinese hospital. My girlfriend needed some treatment. So we went to Dongguan to a better hospital. Better doesn't necessarily mean good, though. If you have to go to a clinic in China, inform yourself very well before you do so. But even in the good hospitals, don't expect European levels of hygiene, let alone privacy.
Privatsphäre chinesischer Art in einem Krankenhaus. Meine Freundin brauchte eine Behandlung & wir fuhren nach Dongguan zu einem der besseren Krankenhäuser. Besser bedeutet aber nicht unbedingt gut. Wer in China ins Hospital muß, sollte sich vorher sehr gut informieren. Selbst in den guten Kliniken sollte man aber keine europäischen Hygienstandards erwarten, geschweige denn Privatsphäre.

Another MiG-15 on display, this time in Dongguan's People's Park. (Unlike the one in Qingyuan, this one was purely to see, not to touch.) After the hospital visit we went there because it wasn't too far away, & - well - there is not much to see in Humen itself.
Wieder mal eine MiG-15, diesmal im Volkspark von Dongguan. (Anders als die MiG in Qingyuan war diese aber nicht zum Anfassen.) Nach dem Krankenhausbesuch gingen wir dorthin, weil es nicht allzu weit weg war & es - nunja - in Humen nicht viel zu sehen gibt.
In the park is also this memorial for commie martyrs. The statues were very much Soviet style.
Im Park findet sich auch dieses Denkmal für Kommi-Märtyrer. Die Statuen muten sehr sowjetisch an.
Although, well, the proportions of the guy in the middle seem a bit off.
Obwohl, hmm, der Typ in der Mitte hat doch etwas seltsame Proportionen.
The nicest place in the park is this building in traditional Chinese style. I doubt that it's very old, but it's very popular among Chinese visitors, particularly for taking selfies & such.
Das Interessanteste am Park ist dieses Gebäude in traditionell chinesischem Stil. Ich bezweifle, daß es sehr alt ist, aber es ist bei den chinesischen Besuchern sehr beliebt, insbesondere um Selfies & andere Bilder zu machen.
It's a really nice place (if there were not so many people all the time), but there is not much to see or do, beside taking pictures. Well, with one exception:
Dort ist es recht nett (wenn es nur nicht ständig soviele Leute gäbe), aber es gibt doch nicht viel zu sehen oder tun, außer Bilder zu machen. Mit einer Ausnahme:
Numerous goldfish want to be fed. & that's what the visitors there do. Maybe that brings luck. Don't know because I never tried.
Zahllose Goldfische wollen gefüttert werden. & das ist, was die Besucher dort tun. Vielleicht bringt das Glück. Keine Ahnung, da ich es nie probiert habe.
Because I had to go back to Shaoguan, I booked a hotel in Dongguan. So I could take the coach from there the next day. This is what a typical hotel room in a private, medium level hotel in China looks like. If you go to China, you should preferably book "inns" instead. These are usually part of hotel chains & they offer the best value for money.
Da ich zurück nach Shaoguan mußte, nahm ich in Dongguan ein Hotel, so daß ich von dort aus am nächsten Tag den Bus nehmen konnte. So sieht ein typischer Raum in einem privaten Hotel mittlerer Preisklasse in China aus. Wer China besucht, sollte lieber versuchen, in einem "Inn" unterzukommen. Diese gehören normalerweise zu Hotelketten & bieten das beste Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis.

Somewhere in between on this trip we were also shortly in Zhongshan. We spent only a few hours there, so there is not much to tell about this city. But I took a few pics, which I wouldn't know where else to put. The above is a fairly common street view in China (at least if there is an expensive hotel or a tourist spot nearby).
Irgendwann auf diesem Trip waren wir auch kurz in Zhongshan, aber nur für einige Stunden, weshalb ich darüber nicht viel sagen kann. Machte aber ein paar Fotos, die ich sonst nicht unterzubringen wüßte. Oben sieht man einen relativ normalen Straßenanblick in China (wenn ein teures Hotel oder eine Touristenfalle in der Nähe ist).
& by coinicidence, just when we were there, they were shooting a music video for a band I had never heard of (& have never again heard of).
& zufälligerweise wurde gerade zu dem Zeitpunkt ein Musikvideo aufgenommen, für eine Band, von der ich nie zuvor gehört hatte (& auch seidem nichts mehr gehört habe).
& that's it for my first visit to Humen. As a tourist destination, it's only interesting if you're an Opium War specialist. If you need wholesale textiles, it may be the place to go, as well. I went there quite regularly, though, when I lived in China. I like Canton in general & I have a friend in Humen.
& das war alles zu meinem ersten Besuch in Humen. Als Touristendestination ist es nur für jene interessant, die sich mit den Opiumkriegen beschäftigen. Wenn man im Textilgroßhandel ist, mag man auch mal hinfahren wollen. Ich war aber von da an relativ regelmäßig dort, solange ich in China lebte. Mir gefällt nunmal Kanton & außerdem lebt in Humen eine Freundin.
