Since I had more than enough time after the end of the semester & I didn't know whether I would ever come back to Canton, I decided to visit Macao. Being a cheapskate, I didn't book a hotel there & just wanted to walk around for 2 days. Nevertheless, my then-girlfriend wanted to accompany me, assuring me that she could do it.
Da ich nach dem Ende des Semesters mehr als genug Zeit hatte & nicht wußte, wann ich nochmal nach Kanton kommen würde, entschloß ich mich, Macao zu besuchen. Als Geizkragen buchte ich natürlich kein Hotel, sondern wollte nur 2 Tage rumlatschen. Trotzdem bestand meine damalige Freundin darauf, mich zu begleiten & beteuerte, sie schaffe das auch.
So, although I had my doubts, we set off for Macao. If you don't know, Macao was under Portuguese control for 400 years. It had been a permanent lease from 1557 to 1887 & then became a perpetual colony. For some reason, the Portuguese decided to return it to China in 1999, anyway. Too bad, because beside Hong Kong, it was another fine example of cultural fusion.
Also machten wir uns auf den Weg nach Macao, obwohl ich so meine Zweifel hatte. Macao war 400 Jahre lang unter portugiesischer Kontrolle. Von 1557 bis 1887 war es ein Pachtgebiet, danach wurde es zur Kolonie. Aus irgendeinem Grunde entschied Portugal, Macao 1999 an China zurückzugeben. Schade eigentlich, da es neben Hongkong ein weiteres gutes Beispiel für west-östliche Fusion war.
Coming from the PRC the above is the first sight in Macao. It's the Portas do Cerco, the old border gate erected by the Portuguese in 1849.
Wenn man aus der VRC kommt, ist dies die erste Sehenswürdigkeit in Macao. Es handelt sich um die Portas do Cerco (sorry, aber für die meisten hier erwähnten Sehenswürdigkeiten gibt es keine deutsche Wikipediaseite), ein Grenzübergang aus dem Jahr 1849.
For some reason, the first noticable thing for me inside Macao were these mantis shrimps. They are pretty common in Chinese seafood restaurants. So I should have seen them earlier. Maybe I had never gotten close enough to take a proper picture. But then the sightseeing started.
Aus welchem Grund auch immer waren diese Fangschreckenkrebse für mich die erste echte Sehenswürdigkeit in Macao. In chinesischen Restaurants sieht man sie eigentlich recht häufig. Entweder hatte ich sie nie vorher gesehen oder war nie nah genug rangekommen, um Bilder zu machen. Dann startete aber die eigentliche Stadtbesichtigung.
Macao is one of the most densely populated places on Earth. Yet, unlike Hong Kong it still has - at least in parts - the character of a town. There are lots of old colonial buildings which give the old town a certain Mediterranean feeling. Well, I haven't been there for 10 years or so. I'm afraid, Macao will become like any other major mainland city sooner or later. If you want to go there, you shouldn't wait too long.
Macao ist einer der dichtestbesiedelten Orte der Welt. Trotzdem hat es - anders als Hongkong - zumindest teilweise noch den Charakter einer Kleinstadt. Es gibt viele alte Kolonialbauten, die der Altstadt ein gewisses mediterranes Flair verleihen. Nunja, ich war mehr als 10 Jahre nicht mehr da. Befürchte, daß Macao früher oder später zu einer gesichtslosen, chinesischen Großstadt wird. Wer es besuchen will, sollte nicht zu lange warten.
This is the Santa Casa Da Misericordia which was originally built in 1569. It was a medical clinic & later an orphanage.

The Church of Saint Dominic. The building was originally finished in 1587, but most of what is visible now stems from the early 17th century. For a while in the 19th century it was converted into barracks, a stable and an office for public works. In its bell tower is the Treasure of Sacred Art Museum.
Die Sankt-Dominic-Kirche. Diese wurde ursprünlich 1587 fertiggestellt, aber was man heute noch sehen kann, stammt hauptsächlich aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert. Im 19. Jh. wurde die Kirche als Kaserne, Pferdestall & Verwaltungsgebäude genutzt. Im Glockenturm befindet sich heute ein Museum für religiöse Kunst (Treasure of Sacred Art Museum).
This building has no historical significance (I know of), but I took a picture because it reminds me of a lot of buildings you found in older parts of Cantonese cities. Just in 2006 & 07, in Shaoguan they tore down many such buildings to make way for new residential towers.
Dieses Gebäude hat keine größere historische Bedeutung, aber es erinnerte mich an viele Gebäude, die man in älteren Teilen kantonesischer Städte fand. In Shaoguan wurden die meisten derartigen Gebäude ausgerechnet 2006 & 2007 abgerissen, um Platz für neue Wohntürme zu schaffen.
Die Kathedrale der Geburt unserer Liebfrauen, ursprünglich als Holzgebäude im Jahr 1623 errichtet, stammt die heutige Konstruktion hauptsächlich aus dem Jahr 1937.

Macao is a great place for simply walking around. It just doesn't get boring. My girlfriend did quite well on that first day, although in the afternoon, she ever more frequently asked to "just rest here for a while". Was OK with me because that way I had more time to take pictures. That way I got some interesting wall decorations:
Macao ist toll, um einfach nur rumzulatschen. Wird einfach nicht langweilig. Meine Freundin hielt sich am ersten Tag noch wacker, obwohl sie am Nachmittag doch immer öfter nach kleinen Pausen fragte. Was auch OK war, da ich so mehr Zeit hatte, Bilder zu machen. Bei einer solchen Gelegenheit sah ich z.B. diese interessanten Wanddekorationen:
They are probably fairly recent & show traditional life in Macao, I suppose. There were also number of nice small fountains like this:

There should also be rather many small temples & shrines, Cantonese after all are rather superstitious. & Macao was settled mostly by Cantonese. One of the few Chinese religious sites I saw was this small temple (the Kuan Tai Temple, if I'm not mistaken), though, & it was already closed:
Kantonesen sind generell ziemlich abergläubisch, weswegen es eigentlich viele kleine Tempel & Schreine geben sollte. Schließlich lebten in Macao hauptsächlich Kantonesen. Sah aber nur wenige chinesische Tempel, wie den Kuan-Tai-Tempel, der aber leider schon zu war:
Then it was dinner time & we decided to eat in a "Portuguese" restaurant called Boa Mesa:

I have no idea of Portuguese cuisine & can't really judge the authenticity of the food. But I have some doubts that the steak with French fries my girlfriend ordered were traditionally Portuguese. At least we got a proper salad, which is hard to come by in China.
Habe keine Ahnung von portugiesischer Küche & kann nicht beurteilen, wie authentisch das Essen war. Aber habe so meine Zweifel, daß das Steak mit Fritten, welches meine Freundin bestellte, traditionell portugiesisch war. Immerhin gab es richtigen Salat, was in China schwer zu finden ist.
After we finished dinner, we went back to sightseeing. These are the famous Ruins of St. Paul's. What you see is the southern facade of the former St. Paul's Church, which was built in the 17th century & destroyed by fire in 1835. This is probably the most famous sightseeing spot in Macao.
Nach dem Essen ging es weiter. Dies sind die berühmten Ruinen der Pauluskirche. Was man sieht, ist die Südfassade der Kirche, die im 17. Jahrhundert erbaut & 1835 durch ein Feuer zerstört wurde. Das ist wohl die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit Macaos.
Nearby is this very small Na Tcha Temple. I thought it was more a shrine, but it is actually a proper temple, built in 1888 to honour some god of war. As you can see, it was also already closed.
Nahebei ist der winzige Na-Tcha-Tempel. Hatte ich eher für einen Schrein gehalten, aber es ist ein richtiger Tempel, erbaut in 1888, um einen Kriegsgott zu ehren. Wie man sieht, war er auch schon geschlossen.
On the way uphill to the fortress, we had a nice view on the tower of the Lisboa Casino (the Grand Lisboa Hotel, I think), being built at that time. Will be not the last picture, because although it was still under construction, it offered some nice views.
Auf dem Weg bergauf zur Festung hatten wir einen guten Blick auf den damals im Bau befindlichen Turm des Lisboa-Casinos, der dann zum Grand Lisboa Hotel wurde. War nicht das einzige Bild davon, da er trotz der Bauarbeiten recht interessante Ansichten bot.
The fortress, called Fortaleza do Monte was of course closed. (That's my life, always being late.) So, not much to take pictures of, just a wall with some replica cannon sticking out.
Die Festung, genannt Fortaleza do Monte oder Monte Forte, war natürlich auch schon zu. (Das ist mein Leben, immer zu spät.) Also gab es nicht viel zu fotografieren, nur die Mauer mit ein paar hervorschauenden Kanonen.
Going downhill again, we got another nice view of the reflections on the Lisboa Casino tower.

Then we were finally at the money makers of Macao, the casinos. The above shows the Lisboa Casino from the side. The casino is not just one building, but a whole complex.
Dann erreichten wir endlich die Geldmaschinen Macaos, die Casinos. Oben sieht man das Lisboa von der Seite. Dabei handelt es sich nicht nur um ein Gebäude, sondern einen ganzen Komplex.

Teil des Komplexes ist auch ein kleinerer Turm. Könnte auch ein Hotel gewesen sein. Kümmert mich aber nicht wirklich, mich interessieren nur die (recht verschwenderischen) Lichterspiele:
At the foot of this tower we ran into a film crew. Seems, they just finished shooting a scene:

Don't know any of these people or what flic they were filming, though. Maybe it wasn't even a film, but some TV show (although the camera looks not like a TV camera). Which would fit, because the next sight was the Macau Tower:
Weiß nicht, wer das war oder welcher Film gedreht wurde. Vielleicht war es auch kein Film, sondern eine Fernsehshow (obwohl die Kamera eher für Filmaufnahmen gedacht erschien). Was passend wäre, da die nächste Sehenswürdigkeit der Macao-Turm (Hurra! Ein Wikipediaartikel.) war:
By then it was getting really late. We were at the seaside, near some nicely ligthened bridges:
Zu dem Zeitpunkt war es schon recht spät. Wir waren inzwischen an der Küste, in der Nähe einiger hell erleuchteter Brücken:
Since Macao is pretty much a 24-hour economy, I just wanted to keep on walking. But, as expected, my girlfriend was getting rather tired. So, we entered a hotel just to use the toilet & to wash ourselves.
Da Macao eine 24-Stunden-Ökonomie ist, wollte ich einfach weitermachen. Aber wie erwartet war meine Freundin ziemlich müde. Also gingen wir in ein Hotel, um die dortige Toilette zu benutzen & uns zu waschen.
Afterwards we went back to the coastline, where my girlfriend found herself a bench to sleep on. & that concludes day 1 in Macao, just a few more pics:
