Macao 2007 - A visit / Ein Trip - 2/2

January 2020 · 8 min read
After walking with me for most of the first day in Macao, my then-girlfriend was too tired to go on. She had found herself a bench at the coast to sleep on. Since I wouldn't be able to sleep like that, even if I wanted to, I decided to walk around a bit to make more pictures.

Macao is busy 24 hours a day & because of all the casinos, it is one giant lightshow. Therefore it makes sense to walk around all night & take photos (if you like this kind of lightshow).Macao ist ununterbrochen geschäftig & wegen der ganzen Casinos ist es eine große Lichtershow.

There were some bridges in the area & I thought I could take some nice pictures from up there. But when I walked a few hundred metres, I noticed 3 guys conspicuously uninterested walking slowly towards my sleeping girlfriend. So, I hurried back, making more noise than usually necessary to make my presence heard. Upon which they lost their non-interest & walked a bit quicker than before in the other direction.

Well, after that I decided not to walk away too far, which also meant I couldn't take many pictures for a few hours. Luckily, my girlfriend didn't sleep too long & we could start wandering again. So, I could get some more nice nightlights.

The Lisboa Hotel under construction provided some nice reflections again:Das im Bau befindliche Lisboa-Hotel reflektierte wieder schön:

& even just with the street lights, some of the old colonial buildings are rather sightly:& selbst nur mit Straßenbeleuchtung sind die Kolonialgebäude recht ansehnlich:

What we also noticed was the considerable number of prostitutes. They were not everywhere, but in some places (IIRC, particularly where there was a concentration of jewelers) it was teeming with streetwalkers.

After dawn we also saw one of the more remarkable modern buildings. I suppose, the colours represent some precious metals, because of feng shui. But that's just an assumption.

The Lisboa complex in daylight may not be as interesting as during the night, but it's still quite nice:Der Lisboakomplex mag bei Licht besehen nicht so interessant sein wie des nachts, aber trotzdem nicht schlecht:

Not all of the colonial buildings were well-maintained. Some of the privately used ones were in a rather mediocre state:Nicht alle älteren Gebäude wurden gut instandgehalten.

Then we were back at the Monte Forte. This time it was open & we could get in. They had some nice replicas of "red barbarian cannon", which were so barbarian, that the Chinese decided to copy them.

From up there you have a nice view over Macao. Good field of fire for the "red barbarian cannon", as well.

In the fortress located is the Macau Museum. It's not too big, but they have some interesting stuff. Sadly, I didn't take a lot of photos. Don't remember, why. But 2 of the more interesting pieces in their exhibition I got.

The above is a replica of the first Gutenberg printing press brought to China. It arrived in Macao in 1595, mostly to print Christian publications. Below is a Chinese dragon cannon. Probably also a replica, but I couldn't find any further information.

Since it was nearby, we also went again to the ruins of St. Paul. Looks more interesting at night, but you can pep it up with some perspective.

Several shops in the pedestrian streets sell a Macao specialty: dried crispy meat. Don't think, I tried it there, but stuff like this is quite common in China, actually. Usually quite tasty. Meist recht lecker.

Due to the competition, the shops send promote their products outside. The promoters use scissors to cut off pieces of meat so people can try.

Just wandering around, we came across the Jardim de Lou Lim Ioc. A small park which was originally the private garden of some rich guy. In it is this nice screen:Einfach nur durch die Gegend spazierend, erreichten wir den Jardim de Lou Lim Ioc, einen kleinen Park, welcher mal der Garten irgendeines reichen Typen war. Darin gab es dieses interessante Wandbild:

A pavilion in a small lake, accessible via a typically wound Chinese bridge.

The lake features many lucky carps:Im Teich wimmelte es von Glückskarpfen:

Beside the park is the Museum of Macau Tea Culture. It's a nice colonial building, but the museum only opened in 2005.Direkt am Park ist das Museum der Macao-Tee-Kultur.

A bit further down the road is the central library of Macao. Again a nice colonial building:Ein Stück weiter befindet sich die Nationalbibliothek Macaos. Auch ein nettes Kolonialgebäude:

Somehow we made a turn & came across the Victory Garden. It commemorates the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Macao against the Dutch (the red-haired barbarians) in 1622.Irgendwie kamen wir dann an den Siegespark.

After that we came back to the Tap Seac Square, where the library is located. Beside it is the Cultural Institute of Macao:Danach waren wir wieder auf dem Tap-Seac-Platz, wo auch die Bibliothek steht. Daneben befindet sich das Kulturinstitut Macaos:

The last impression of this first visit to Macao is a building obviously from 1925. What it is or was, no idea.
