On 10 March Patras carnival culminated in the Grand Parade. I made a number of videos & some 800 photos. Editing the videos & sifting through the pics took a lot of time. Yesterday I finished everything, only to find that viuly.io obviously stopped working (some kind of exit scam maybe?).
Am 10. März gab es den Höhepunkt des Karnevals in Patras, den großen Umzug. Ich machte einige Videos & ca. 800 Fotos. Die Bearbeitung der Videos & das Aussortieren der Bilder hat doch einiges an Zeit gekostet. Gestern war ich endlich fertig, wonach ich dann feststellen mußte, daß viuly.io anscheinend nicht mehr funktioniert.
So, now I have to decide what to do with my videos. Since my internet connection is rather bad, esp. for uploading, I don't want to upload all the videos to multiple websites. For now, I just uploaded the highlights to d.tube:
Also muß ich jetzt sehen, was ich mit den Videos machen soll. Da meine Internetverbindung recht mies ist, besonders was das Hochladen angeht, will ich sie nicht auf mehrere Videoplattformen hochladen. Für's Erste habe ich nur das Highlight-Video bei d.tube eingestellt:

Obwohl ich so lange für's Durchsehen der Bilder brauchte, sind immer noch 113 übrig. Denke mal, ich sollte nicht alle in diesem Beitrag unterbringen. Mal sehen, wieviele ich hier reinpacken kann...
As usual, I was a bit late. But I don't think I missed a lot. The above is the 1st picture I took. There were a number of jeeps with "soldiers". Don't know whether this was some kind of tribute to the liberation of Greece in WWII or just the usual carnival stuff. The jeep above looks pretty original, the others were of a more modern breed:
Wie üblich war ich ein bißchen zu spät. Aber ich glaube nicht, daß ich allzuviel verpaßt habe. Oben sieht man das 1. Bild, das ich aufnahm. Vor dem Umzug fuhren einige Jeeps mit "Soldaten". Könnte eine Art Tribut an die Befreier im 2. WK gewesen sein (oder einfach nur der normale Karnevalskram). Der oben zu sehende Jeep sieht ziemlich original aus, aber die anderen waren eher moderner Herkunft:

After the jeeps, the first marching groups appeared. As usual with the Grand Parade, there were a lot children involved.
Hinter den Jeeps kamen dann die ersten Fußgruppen. Wie üblich beim Umzug hier waren auch viele Kinder dabei.
A little later I found a spot to make the video. From then on things got a bit complicated. Taking the video with the SLR in one hand & making photos with my compact camera in the other.
Kurz darauf fand ich dann eine Ecke, an der ich ein Video aufnehmen konnte. Das machte alles ein bißchen kompliziert, da ich die SLR für die Videoaufnahme in einer Hand hatte, & die Kompaktkamera zum Fotografieren in der anderen.
For what I remember, last year there were more floats. Don't know why. Also, most of the floats were not as elaborately produced as the above. Perhaps the groups making them had not as much money this year.
Soweit ich mich entsinnen kann, gab es letztes Jahr mehr Wagen. Keine Ahnung, warum. Die Wagen, die es gab, schienen auch nicht ganz so aufwendig konstruiert zu sein. Vielleicht hatten die Karnevalsgruppen dieses Jahr nicht soviel Geld.
Some of the marching groups featured some nice & elaborate costumes, though. Just like last year the size of these groups varied greatly. Some had just some 20 members, while others counted hundreds.
Einige der Fußgruppen hatten jedoch ziemlich aufwendige Kostüme. Die Größe dieser Gruppen variierte wieder gewaltig, genau wie letztes Jahr. Manchen hatten nur etwa 20 Leute, andere zählten hunderte.
The float you see above was my favourite. Very nicely done. They had some kind of air cannon in the hand which shot out colourful pieces of paper or aluminium foil. (You can see that in the video.)
Der Wagen, den man oben sieht, gefiel mir am besten. Sehr gut gemacht. In der Hand gab es eine Art Luftkanone, die bunte Papier- oder Aluschnipsel verschoss. (Sieht man im Video.)
This group was called "Victoria's Secret". You can see why it should be kept secret.
Diese Gruppe nannte sich Victoria's Secret. Wie man sieht, sollte manches wirklich geheim bleiben.
These birds show that you can get quite impressive results without spending too much on material.
Diese Vögel zeigen, daß man auch mit relativ geringem Materialeinsatz gute Ergebnisse bekommen kann.
Sadly, my position was not the best. Particularly in the beginning there were a number of journalists in front of the barrier which I had to stay behind. Later, when it got dark, there were more & more police. Got some lucky shots in, though.
Leider war meine Position nicht die beste. Besonders am Anfang kamen mir immer wieder einige Fotoreporter in die Quere. Später, als es dunkel wurde, standen dort immer mehr Polizisten.
Also different to last year (& different to this year's Night Parade): There were not so many people whistling. Although, as you can see, there were still a number of people with whistles:
Auch anders als im letzten Jahr (& anders als beim diesjährigen Nachtumzug): Es gab zwar viele Leutchen mit Trillerpfeifen, aber der Lärm war nicht so stark.
After the Night Parade I prepared some ear plugs, because the noise was just too much. But, being me, when I went to the Grand Parade, I forgot to take them with me. Luckily, I'm not too stupid & ripped a paper handkerchief apart & stuffed it into my ears. Worked like a charm.
Nach dem Nachtumzug hatte ich Ohrstopfen präpariert, weil mir der Lärm einfach zuviel war. Aber, so wie ich nunmal bin, vergaß, sie mitzunehmen. Glücklicherweise bin ich nicht gar so blöd & zerriß ein Papiertaschentuch & stopfte mir damit die Ohren. Funktionierte wunderbar.

Zum Glück gibt es hier in Giechenland keine US-amerikanischen SJWs. Falls es sich beim werten Leser um einen solchen handeln sollte, wäre es u.U. angebracht, die nächsten Bilder zu überspringen.
Blackface! Oh my! - Nope. Actually, just some harmless fun. Although it's probably only a matter of time until some idiots start complaining about Greek blackface, too.
Blackface! Wie schrecklich! - Nö, eigentlich nicht, eher harmloser Spaß. Es ist aber wohl nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis einige Idioten auch anfangen, sich über Blackface in Griechenland zu beschweren.
The above is actually a close 2nd when it comes to my favourite float. Very nice one. A lot of effort went into this one. Too bad. that by then, the sun was already going down.
Der Wagen oben ist fast so gut wie das Pustegesicht. Auch sehr gut gemacht. Da hat sich jemand viel Mühe gegeben. Zu schade, daß da die Sonne schon fast weg war.
That girl above & below must be some kind of local (or maybe even national) celebrity. She (& another girl) was for a while always moving in front of the TV cameras, talking to people & taking pictures with group members.
Das Mädel hier scheint eine lokale (oder vielleicht auch nationale) Berühmtheit zu sein. Lief zusammen mit einem anderen Mädel eine ganze Weil vor den Fernsehkameras herum, um mit allerlei Leuten zu reden & um sich fotografieren zu lassen.
When it got darker, the first flares appeared. It seems that they position the bigger youth groups at the end of the parade, just for them to be able to flare up.
Als es dunkler wurde, kamen die ersten Bengalos zum Vorschein. Scheint so, als würden die größeren Gruppen mit Jugendlichen absichtlich am Ende positioniert, so daß sie ein bißchen rumfackeln können.
These groups also whistle a lot more than the others. But some spectators didn't seem to be bothered:

Well, maybe I'm wrong about youth groups near the end. The guys above don't exactly look like teenagers. & some of those below look suspiciously young.
Nunja, vielleicht liege ich falsch, wenn ich von Jugendgruppen am Ende rede. Die Leutchen oben sehen nicht wirklich wie Teenager aus. & einige von denen auf dem unteren Bild sehen verdächtig jung aus.
Anyway, it was getting darker & this gave me the photos I like best. The next one is my absolute favourite image of this parade. The girl seems to be a bit afraid of the flares. I like it mostly because of the contrast. I used the flash for this picture which makes it look a bit surreal with the clear view of the girl on the boy's shoulders with the smoke in the background & the glowing flares.
Auf jeden Fall wurde es dunkler & das ergab die Fotos, die mir am besten gefallen. Das nächste ist mein absolutes Lieblingsbild vom Umzug. Das Mädel scheint ein bißchen Angst vor den Bengalos zu haben. Ich mag den Kontrast. Durch den Blitz sieht das ein bißchen unwirklich aus. Das Mädel auf den Schultern des Jungen ist klar erkennbar & im Hintergrund der Rauch mit den glühenden Bengalos.

Then I didn't really want to stay there much longer. I moved toward the gathering grounds for the parade, where still a lot of people were waiting to start marching. On the way I got some more flaring:
Dann kam der Punkt, an dem ich dann fast genug hatte. Also bewegte ich mich in Richtung des Aufmarschplatzes, wo immer noch eine Menge Leute darauf warteten, losmarschieren zu können. Auf dem Weg dorthin glühte noch so einiges:
In the gathering zone people were packed in the streets. Some avoided the masses by climbing on busses:

Not everybody was so lucky, as you can see. Yet, even in these crouds, some were obviously quite happy, like the girl below:
Nicht jeder hatte das Glück, wie man sieht. Trotzdem hatten die Leute auch in diesem Gedränge noch Spaß, wie man an dem Mädel unten sieht:
That was it pretty much. At the very end of the parade were 2 more floats. They were throwing chocolate into the spectator crowd. Much like carnival in the German Rhineland.
Das war's so ziemlich. Am Ende des Zugs gab es dann noch 2 Wagen. Die Auffahrenden schmissen Schokolade in die Zuschauermenge, ähnlich wie im rheinischen Karneval.
