Shaoguan - Cycling in the countryside / Umgebungsradeln # 11

After so much (night-)life, there must be death. Of which there is a lot in this post. Today's pictures are from mid-April 2007 & were mostly taken in the fields around Shaoguan.
Wo es viel (Nacht-)Leben gibt, ist der Tod nicht fern. Davon gibt es in diesem Beitrag etwas mehr als normal. Die heutigen Bilder stammen von Mitte April 2007 aus den Feldern um Shaoguan.
The next picture is actually a bit unusual for Canton. Much of this province is hilly or even mountainous & Cantonese (like most Chinese, I think) prefer to put their graves into the hill or mountain sides. In this case, though, they were put in the middle of some fields.
Das nächste Bild zeigt etwas eher Ungewöhnliches für Kanton. Zu einem großen Teil ist diese Provinz hügelig oder bergig & Kantonesen (wie die meisten Chinesen, denke ich) bevorzugen es, ihre Gräber in Hänge zu bauen. In diesem Fall hat man sie jedoch mitten in ein Feld gegraben.
In the middle is a quite well-built tomb, while on the left the graves consist just of simple earthen mounds. The one on the right is in between. Which goes a bit against my theory that the better-built a tomb is, the wealthier its builders were. Since I suppose the field is owned by one family, then they either should have become wealthier or poorer over time (depending on whichever grave was built first).
In der Mitte sieht man eine recht gut gebaute Gruft, während die Gräber links aus einfachen Erdhügeln bestehen. Das Grab rechts ist ein Zwischending. Dies widerspricht etwas meiner Idee, daß je besser die Gruft, desto wohlhabender die Erbauer.
Or the middle tomb was built for a more important family member. For which speaks that it has a bigger area around it which is not farmed. Interestingly, though, there is no white paper on this tomb, while the poorer ones are decorated. The white paper signifies mourning. Honestly, I don't know what to make of it.
Oder vielleicht wurde die mittlere Gruft für ein wichtigeres Familienmitglied errichtet. Dafür spricht, daß darum herum mehr Raum bis zum Feld ist. Interessanterweise ist jedoch kein weißes Papier auf dieser Gruft, während die ärmeren damit dekoriert sind. Das weiße Papier symbolisiert Trauer. Weiß echt nicht, wie das zu erklären ist.
A bit further I saw these 2 farmers from the title photo. The one in the foreground uses a motorized tool, while the one in the background goes the traditional way.
Etwas weiter sah ich dann die beiden Bauern des Titelbildes. Der im Vordergrund benutzt ein motorisiertes Gerät, während der im Hintergrund eher traditionell zugange ist.
In the flooded rice paddies I found a number of these frogs. This seems to be the green puddle frog (Occidozyga lima). They were just in mating mood & not too cautious.
In den gefluteten Reisfeldern fand ich eine Anzahl dieser Frösche. Dabei handelt es sich wohl um Occidozyga lima (kein deutscher Wikipediaeintrag). Die Frösche waren im Paarungsmodus & nicht sonderlich vorsichtig.
These 2 were facing each other off, just 50 cm from each other. Couldn't get them both in focus together, though. Near them was this damselfly waiting for prey:
Die beiden auf den obigen Bildern saßen sich gegenüber, nur 50 cm voneinander entfernt. Konnte sie aber leider nicht gemeinsam in den Fokus kriegen. Ganz in der Nähe wartete diese Libelle auf Beute:
A bit further on I met a free-ranging chicken. But it was clearly not interested in being photographed & only showed me its backside:
Ein Stück weiter traf ich auf ein freilaufendes Huhn. Wollte sich aber ganz offenbar nicht fotografieren lassen:
On a farm nearby I found another mother with child for my never-realized "pretty mamas" series (granny was obviously not as happy with me):
Auf einer Farm in der Nähe fand ich ein weiteres Mutter-Kind-Paar für meine nie realisierte 'Hübsche Mamas'-Serie. (Die Oma war offenbar nicht von meiner Anwesenheit begeistert.)
Then I found another interesting tomb, this time built into a hillside. Originally quite well-built, it had deteriorated a lot.
Dann fand ich eine weitere interessante Gruft, diesmal in einen Hügelhang gebaut. Ursprünglich war sie wohl ziemlich gut konstruiert, aber war deutlich verfallen.
Further into the hills, there was another of the common Chinese biker traps:
Tiefer in den Hügeln gab es mal wieder eine typisch chinesische Radlerfalle:
In the background you see pithead stocks (if that's the right term). Don't know whether that was a legal mine, or not. Judging from the size probably legal, but they didn't really care where the coal ended up. It was lying around everywhere:
Im Hintergrund sieht man Kohlehalden. Weiß nicht, ob das eine legale Mine war, aber der Umfang deutet darauf hin. Man achtete aber jedenfalls nicht darauf, was mit der Umwelt passierte. Die Kohle lag überall:

Eine nahe Gruft kriegte auch ihren Teil Kohle ab:
This one was also well-built, but left largely without maintenance. As you can see from the white paper, though, it had not been forgotten. People still decorated it.
Auch ordentlich konstruiert, aber nicht instandgehalten. Wie man am weißen Papier sieht, war sie aber nicht vergessen. Sie wurde immer noch dekoriert.
Behind this nice one were several simple earth mounds again:
Direkt dahinter waren wieder einige einfache Grabhügel:
Obviously no maintenance whatsoever for these graves, but still they were decorated with white paper.
Offensichtlich gab es keinerlei Instandhaltung, aber sie wurden dennoch mit weißem Papier geschmückt.
That swallow was watching with interest while that dumb human below was taking pictures of the landscape & graves. Like the next one, which was fairly new, but also just a simple earth mound.
Diese Schwalbe beobachtete mit Interesse den dämlichen Menschen, der da unten Landschaft & Gräber fotografierte. Wie das nächste, das auch ein einfacher Erdhügel war.
A proper tomb to the right, albeit poorly built, right beside an earth mound. Perhaps they were for husband & wife, which died in short order & they had run out of money after the first funeral.
Hier sieht man rechts eine ordentliche Gruft, während direkt links davon ein einfacher Erdhügel reichen mußte. Vielleicht waren die für Mann & Frau gedacht, die kurz nacheinander starben, & man hatte nach dem ersten Begräbnis kein Geld mehr.
In the evening then I found another dead dog in the water:

Don't know why you see that so often in Canton. In this case someone might have drowned an unwanted pup. Then the last grave for today, another earth mound:
Keine Ahnung, warum man sowas so häufig in Kanton sieht. In diesem Fall wollte vielleicht jemand ein ungewolltes Hundejunges loswerden. Ein Stück weiter fand ich das letzte Grab für heute, wieder ein Erdhügel:

Probably also a rather fresh one, although the white paper had already degraded heavily. A lot of incense sticks, though. Finally home, a hunting spider waited for a portrait to be taken:

That should be enough for now. So many graves today should qualify this post for #cemeteryphotos, I suppose.
