Shaoguan - Cycling in the countryside / Umgebungsradeln # 14

This time it's not so much the countryside, but the city. The time in Shaoguan was coming to an end. It was exam time & I had not too many chances left for cycling around. So, I took pictures right & left, when I got out. There was one major event still waiting for me, though.
Dieses Mal geht es nicht so sehr um die Umgebung, sondern um die Stadt. Meine Zeit in Shaoguan ging langsam zu Ende. Es war Prüfungszeit & es gab nicht mehr viele Gelegenheiten zum Radeln. Also machte ich soviele Bilder wie möglich. Eine spezielle Gelegenheit stand mir aber noch bevor.
But before I come to that, let's first introduce what many Chinese, particularly in smaller cities, see as "Western restaurants":
Aber bevor ich dazu mehr schreibe, soll hier erstmal gezeigt werden, was viele Chinesen, v.a. in kleineren Städten als "westliche Restaurants" erleben:
Not much special about this restaurant, actually. Looks just like many other Chinese mid-level restaurants, definitely nothing particularly Western about it. The "Western food" they offered was mostly steak, steak & steak.
An diesem Restaurant ist eigentlich nichts besonders. Sieht aus wie viele andere chinesische Restaurants, nichts speziell Westliches dran. Das angeblich westliche Essen, das angeboten wurde, war hauptsächlich Steak, Steak & nochmal Steak.
Went there with my then-girlfriend. She told me that she thought that's what Westerners usually eat: steak. When I told her that I had never eaten steak before I came to China, she was quite surprised. I ordered the above to try it, my girlfriend had another Western specialty:
Ging mit meiner damaligen Freundin hin. Sie erzählte mir, daß sie geglaubt hatte, das sei, was Westler normalerweise essen: Steak. Als ich ihr erzählte, daß ich nie zuvor eines gegessen hatte, war sie einigermaßen erstaunt. Ich bestellte ein Steak, nur um es mal zu probieren. Sie entschied sich für eine andere westliche Spezialität:
Not sure in which Western country you get such a peculiar combination of krupuk, rice, chicken wing & fried egg. But I'm not much of a traveler. To eat the chicken wing, you got a pair of plastic gloves, by the way. Well, back to cycling. On the river near the restaurant I noticed some rather special boats:
Keine Ahnung, in welchem westlichen Land man solch eine interessante Kombination aus Krabbenbrot, Reis, Hühnerflügel & Spiegelei isst. Aber ich komme auch nicht viel rum. Zum Genuß des Hühnerflügels bekam man übrigens Plastikhandschuhe. Nunja, zurück zum Radeln. Auf dem Fluß in der Nähe des Restaurants fielen mir einige ungewöhnliche Boote auf:

Those are dragon boats. There are traditionally dragon boat races celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival (端午节, duānwǔjié), which falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Dabei handelt es sich um Drachenboote. Es gibt traditionell Drachenbootrennen, um das Drachenbootfest zu feiern, welches auf den 5. Tag des 5. Monats des chinesischen Mondkalenders fällt.
The rubbish collection was around, too. The river must look nice for the festival.
Die Müllabfuhr war auch da. Der Fluß muß schließlich auch gut aussehen für das Fest.
What I had come across were the preparations & training for these races. I will cover this in at least 2 later posts. But on that day, that was all I saw. On my way back to the university, there was some other interesting stuff, though.
Was mir da aufgefallen war, waren die Vorbereitungen & das Training für diese Rennen. Werde mich dem noch in mindestens 2 weiteren Beiträgen widmen. Aber an diesem Tag war das alles, was ich sah. Auf dem Weg zurück zur Uni gab es aber noch einiges Interessantes.
Even with the festival coming closer, normal life goes on. Some shop owners (I think) were drying mushrooms on the pavement, pretty close to the city center. You see that a lot in China. Wherever there is room, people put stuff out to dry.
Auch wenn es bald einen Festtag gibt, so geht das normale Leben doch weiter. Einige Ladenbesitzer (denke ich) trockneten Pilze auf dem Bürgersteig in der Nähe des Stadtzentrums. Sieht man häufiger in China. Wo immer es genug Platz gibt, legen die Menschen Zeug zum Trocknen aus.
That's a nice-looking longhorn beetle there. It's a bamboo borer (chlorophorus annularis). Didn't find much information about it, but it seems to be considered a pest.
Netter Bockkäfer. Es handelt sich um Chlorophorus annularis (Bambusbock ?). Scheint als Ungeziefer angesehen zu werden. Mehr Infos fand ich leider nicht.
Some nice birds were around as well. The above is a young Chinese bulbul. How I know this? Because the parents were around, too.
Vögel gab es auch. Oben sieht man einen jungen Chinesischen Bülbül (Pycnonotus sinensis). Woher ich das weiß? Die Eltern waren in der Nähe.
Why you should avoid all puddles you come across in China:
Unten sieht man, warum man in China Pfützen grundsätzlich ausweichen sollte.
In this case the mother was considerate enough to let her child pee in the gutter (well, in lack of a gutter, on the street). But it is very common that children are allowed to urinate wherever they are, be it the pavement, beside a street restaurant or even inside a supermarket.
In diesem Fall war die Mutter immerhin so rücksichtsvoll, das Kind auf die Straße pinkeln zu lassen. Aber es ist durchaus üblich, daß Kinder überall pieseln dürfen, auf dem Bürgersteig, neben einem Straßenrestaurant oder auch in einem Supermarkt.
A butterfly had fallen into the water. Some little fish were very interested while a dragonfly was watching from above:
Ein Schmetterling war im Wasser gelandet. Einige kleine Fische waren sehr interessiert, während eine Libelle von oben zuschaute:
That should be a Pseudothemis zonata. This species is abundant around Shaoguan. Yet it cost me close to half an hour just to find its name.
Das ist wohl eine Pseudothemis zonata. Diese Art sieht man sehr oft um Shaoguan. Dauerte trotzdem fast eine halbe Stunde, um den Namen zu finden.
Nearby was another dragonfly, this time a ditch jewel (Brachythemis contaminata). This kind is also very common in that area.
In der Nähe saß eine andere Libelle, diesmal eine Bernsteinlibelle. Diese Spezies kommt dort auch sehr häufig vor.
&, believe it or not, I found another dead dog in the water. In this case, though, the reason for its death is pretty obvious:
&, man glaube es oder nicht, es trieb schon wieder ein toter Hund im Wasser. Diesmal war aber klar, warum er wohl ins Wasser gefallen war:
& there was another young bulbul. This one was alone, obviously already large enough to look for food on its own.
& noch ein junger Bülbül. Dieser war alleine unterwegs. War wohl schon alt genug, um auf Nahrungssuche zu gehen.
Some dragonflies were already laying eggs. So, it was possible to photograph them in flight:
Manche Libellen legten schon Eier. So konnte ich einige im Flug fotografieren.
& I caught one right in the act:

Back at the university, I found this nice moth:
Zurück an der Uni sah ich eine interessante Motte:
No idea which species it is. The same sadly goes for the next grasshopper-like animal. It looks a bit like Tettigonia chinensis, but the head doesn't really fit.
Keine Ahnung, welche Spezies. Genausowenig wie für das heupferdartige Viech unten. Sieht fast wie Tettigonia chinensis aus, aber der Kopf paßt nicht wirklich.
