This was the last time that I went out cycling in Shaoguan. There was a mountain quite close to the city which seemed to have a viewing platform quite high up. So, I thought I would go up there to get some nice shots of the city from above. But I was in for a surprise.
Dies war das letzte Mal, daß ich in Shaoguan durch die Gegend radelte. Es gab einen Berg in der Nähe der Stadt, der eine hochgelegene Aussichtsplattform zu haben schien. Wollte von hoch oben ein paar Übersichtsbilder der Stadt machen. Aber mich erwartete eine Überraschung.
First I was in another part of the city, where there were a lot of small shops focused on home improvement. Below is one which provided fountains. The one in the foreground is not necessarily traditional Chinese in style. & in the background is even a Manneken pis for sale.
Aber zunächst war ich in einem anderen Teil der Stadt, wo es einige kleine Läden gab, die insgesamt als eine Art Baumarkt fungierten. Unten sieht man einen, der sich auf Brunnen spezialisiert hatte. Der im Vordergrund scheint nicht unbedingt traditionell chinesisch zu sein. & im Hintergrund sieht man sogar ein Manneken pis.
Nearby was an official building, in the typical bombastic style. Don't know what it was for, perhaps police.
In der Nähe war ein offizielles Gebäude im typischen, bombastischen Stil. Keine Ahnung, was das war, vielleicht ein Polizeipräsidium.

It's an international city. Well, internatinal, actually. You find this kind of shopping centre all over China, though usually not marketed as "internatinal". Lots of shops concentrating on a particular sector, often with the exactly same products on offer right beside each other.
Eine "internationale Stadt" (mit Schreibfehler). Diese Art Einkaufszentrum findet man überall in China, wenn auch nicht angeblich international. Viele Läden aus dem gleichen Sektor dichtgedrängt, oft mit dem exakt gleichen Produktangebot direkt nebeneinander.
Behind the centre, the streets were very Chinese. This was a typical scene back in 2007, at least in more rural areas. People simply burned their garbage beside the road. Nowadays it doesn't seem to be so normal anymore.
Hinter dem Einkaufszentrum ging es sehr chinesisch zu. Dies war eine typische Szene im Jahr 2007, wenigstens in ländlichen Gegenden. Man verbrannte den Müll neben der Straße. Heutzutage sieht man das nicht mehr so häufig.

Trash that couldn't be burned & might be useful or recyclable was collected by private collectors who then sold what was not re-usable to recycling yards.
Müll, der sich nicht verbrennen ließ bzw. noch brauchbar oder zu recyclen war, wurde von Privatleuten eingesammelt. Was nicht wiederzuverwenden war, wurde dann an Recyclingbetriebe verkauft.
The above was one of the first real (residential) high-rises they built in Shaoguan. Probably the first. Up till then the highest buildings had perhaps 14 or 15 floors.
Oben sieht man eines der ersten echten Hochhäuser in Shaoguan. Vermutlich das erste. Bis dahin hatten die höchsten Wohnhäuser dort vielleicht 14 oder 15 Etagen.
This is a typical scene near wet markets. People try to make some money by selling vegetables on the street. The wet market, in this case inside a huge hall, looked like this:
Dies zeigt eine typische Szene neben Märkten. Menschen, die versuchen, sich durch Gemüseverkauf etwas dazuzuverdienen. Der Markt selber, in diesem Fall in einer Halle, sah so aus:
You find these market halls everywhere in China, from the deep South to the freezing North. Sometimes the produce in these market halls is more expensive than on street markets, but not necessarily so. The good thing is, though, that you almost always find some vendors who put the price beside the produce. That way, they can't cheat you on the price. (They can cheat you on the weight, though, so be careful.)
Solche Markthallen findet man in ganz China, vom tiefsten Süden bis in den hohen Norden. Manchmal ist das Zeug in den Hallen etwas teurer als auf Straßenmärkten, aber nicht notwendigerweise. Gut ist allerdings, daß es fast immer einzelne Händler gibt, die ihre Ware auspreisen. So wird man beim Preis nicht so leicht betrogen (allerdings beim Gewicht, also sollte man trotzdem aufpassen).
& then I came to the end of the road. Happened quite a lot in China. Even later in Beijing, there were a lot of dead ends. But, well, cycling in Beijing is not much fun, anyway.
& das war das Ende der Straße. Passierte in China recht oft. Selbst in Peking endete ich später häufig in Sackgassen. Aber, nunja, Radeln in Peking macht eh keinen großen Spaß.
That's the Wujiang River. OK, you can't see the river for the plants, but trust me, it's there. In the background is, IIRC, the mountain I wanted to get up on.
Das ist der Wujiang. Man kann den Fluß nicht sehen, aber er ist wirklich da. Im Hintergrund sieht man (denke ich) den Berg, der mein Ziel war.
But first I notice another farmer (well, probably a farmer's daughter) working the fields, probably pulling weed.
Doch zunächst fiel mir mal wieder eine Bäuerin (naja, vermutlich eine Bauerstochter) auf, die auf dem Feld anscheinend Unkraut ausriß.
The above may show the never-before heard of Wu Li Pavilion. Not sure, though, because I went a bit around the mountain before I found a way up.
Oben sieht man den weltberühmtenWuli-Pavillon. Bin aber nicht sicher, da ich ein Stück um den Berg fuhr, bevor ich einen Weg nach oben fand.
& this is the landscape I love around Shaoguan. It's just wonderful for hiking & cycling. Albeit, sometimes you come to a dead end. Or, believe it or not, you come to a stairway cut into the mountainside:
& dies ist die Landschaft um Shaoguan, die ich so sehr mag. Einfach toll zum Radeln oder Wandern. Auch wenn man manchmal in einer Sackgasse landet. Oder an eine Treppe kommt, die in den Berg gehauen wurde:
That was perhaps the way to the pavilion. Chinese like to have stairs on their mountains. That was not the only occasion I came across a stairway like that.
War vielleicht der Weg zum Pavillon. Chinesen haben schonmal gerne Treppen an ihren Berghängen. War jedenfalls nicht das einzige Mal, daß ich eine solche sah.
Well, stairway or not, I went further uphill & got a nice picture of the smog. Mind you, that was not in winter, it was the middle of July.
Nun, Treppe oder nicht, weiter ging's bergauf. & konnte tatsächlich ein gutes Bild des Smogs machen. Das war nicht im Winter, sondern Mitte Juli.
I wanted to get closer to the top, so I followed a road I had found. Which was when I noticed this entrance of a military bunker. At that moment, I was just wondering what it was, though. (BTW, the characters say: "Long live chairman Mao") Had no idea there were military installations in Shaoguan.
Wollte höher hinauf & folgte einer Straße, die ich gefunden hatte. Dann fand ich diesen Eingang zu einem Militärbunker. Zu dem Zeitpunkt wunderte ich mich nur, was das wohl sein könnte. (Die Zeichen bedeuten übrigens: "Lang lebe der Vorsitzende Mao") Hatte keine Ahnung, daß es in Shaoguan Militäreinrichtungen gab.
An old forgotten gate? Well, not so old perhaps, but obviously not used. Didn't think much of it. (The writing just warns against using lighters in the forest, if I see that correctly.) Then came the big surprise, the "viewing platform". Suddenly I was in the middle of a military base. There had been no guards (well, Canton in summer, you rather stay with your air-co inside) or obvious warning signs.
Ein altes, vergessenes Tor? Vermutlich nicht so alt, aber offenbar nicht in Gebrauch. Kümmerte mich nicht weiter drum. (Die Aufschrift warnt nur vor dem Gebrauch von Feuerzeugen im Wald, falls ich das richtig sehe.) Dann kam die große Überraschung, die 'Aussichtsplattform'. Plötzlich war ich inmitten einer Militärbasis. Es hatte keine Wachen gegeben (Kanton im Sommer, da bleibt man lieber in der Nähe einer Klimaanlage) oder irgendwelche Warnhinweise.
I was standing there & looking around, when finally some soldiers appeared, at least as surprised as I was. After a while an officer appeared, who could speak a little English, & asked what I was doing there. I told him I was just cycling & taking pictures of the environment. Luckily, those were the days before emperor Xi came to power & this was Shaoguan. So, he told me that I was not allowed to take any pictures there & I should leave immediately. Didn't even ask for my passport. Nowadays I probably wouldn't get off so easily. (Not sure whether the picture above actually shows the base. I don't remember taking any photos inside.)
Ich stand da & sah mich um, als dann doch einige Soldaten auftauchten, die mindestens genauso überrascht waren wie ich. Nach kurzer Zeit erschien ein Offizier, der ein bißchen Englisch konnte & mich fragte, was ich dort machte. Worauf ich erwiderte, daß ich nur rumradelte, um Bilder von der Umgebung zu machen. Das war glücklicherweise, bevor Kaiser Xi an die Macht kam, & es war Shaoguan. Also sagte er mir nur, daß ich keine Bilder machen dürfe & sofort verschwinden solle. Fragte nicht mal nach meinem Pass. Heutzutage wäre ich nicht so leicht davongekommen. (Keine Ahnung, ob das obige Bild die Basis zeigt. Kann mich nicht erinnern, dort Fotos gemacht zu haben.)
Went back to downtown Shaoguan to visit a family I know there. On the way I encountered the scene above. Old buildings & makeshift shops in front & in the background a rather typical modern apartment block.
Danach fuhr ich zurück nach Shaoguan, um jemanden zu besuchen. Auf dem Weg sah ich die Szene oben. Alte Gebäude & improvisierte Läden vor dem Hintergrund eines modernen Wohnblocks.
When I was at the family's home, I found another gecko. This one was in their bathroom, perhaps hunting cockroaches.
Im Badezimmer der Familie, die ich besuchte, begegnete mir wieder mal ein Gecko, vermutlich auf der Jagd nach Schaben.

& on the way back to the university, another of those scenes. The old in the foreground & the new in the background. There are ever more of these boring apartment blocks in China nowadays, but you can still find such scenery.
& auf dem Weg zurück zur Uni, noch eine dieser Szenen. Das Alte im Vordergrund, das Neue dahinter. Es gibt heutzutage immer mehr dieser langweiligen Wohnblocks in China, aber man findet immer noch ältere Gebäude mit Charakter.
The above Chinglish shirt was the last impression of that day. That was it about my time in Shaoguan. Well, almost. I will probably write a Shaoguan overview, an introduction to the university & probably also a post about the famous Danxia Mountain, which I didn't visit myself. For now, just a few more pics:
