This time I ventured out a bit further east of Shaoguan. Instead of footpaths, I mostly followed some country roads. This way, you can cover longer distances, but the environment is not as interesting. Still quite nice, though: | Diesmal wagte ich mich etwas weiter ins Umland östlich Shaoguans.

One nice thing about Canton is, that many of the smaller rivers are still in a fairly natural - albeit polluted - state. Or they were that way in 2007. Can't speak about now, since in China things change quickly & I haven't been there again in recent years. But back then you could still admire stuff like this: | Ein Gutes an Kanton ist die Tatsache, daß viele kleinere Flüsse immer noch relativ natürlich - wenn auch verschmutzt - sind.

A little bit further I found my first official cemetery in China. |

The above is just a screen celebrating filial piety, if I understand that correctly. Which is very important in China. One duty is to keep your ancestors happy, even after death. |

That's what a modern, official cemetery looks like (if there is a hill). For what I can see, it only contains cremated remains. Private or illegal cemeteries are more interesting. |

Back to the landscape. Formations like these could also be found in Guilin (I think), where they are famous & attract masses of tourists. In Canton, Shaoguan specifically, almost no one goes there, with the exception of the phallus-like Danxia Mountain maybe. |

Have never been to Danxia Mountain, but one of my former students gave me some pictures. So, I may write a post about it in the future. For now, I stick to my own photos. Which were not getting better, because it was getting late: | War nie selber am Danxia Shan, aber eine meiner früheren Studentinnen überließ mir ein paar Bilder.

I haven't mentioned it before, but if you go cycling in China, you have to be rather careful. Even in the cities, it might be quite dangerous because construction sites are often not (properly) secured or manhole covers are loose. In the countryside, it's even worse, particularly at night. There is often no street lighting & the bicycles usually don't feature lights, either. |

In this case I was using a rather newly built concrete road. As you can see, the steel armaments are protruding (probably to install safety rails in the future). There are no street lights & there is nothing that would warn you in the dark.

If you run into these in the dark, you're done with. Oh well, it was luckily not too dark when I got there. On my way home, I came across another nice sight: | Wenn man im Dunkeln da reinfährt, ist man erledigt.

Nothing special, probably just a traditional gate advertising a country restaurant. But looks nice, anyway. |

& that's it for that day. More to follow. | & das war's für diesen Tag. Irgendwann gibts mehr. |
