Shaoguan - Cycling in the countryside / Umgebungsradeln #5

June 2019 · 5 min read
Back in the days of early 2007, the area around the university of Shaoguan was still very rural. (It still is rural nowadays, but there are a lot more people living there.) So, it was not necessary to venture out too far to come across interesting stuff.

This time I just went into the hills north of the university. Being rural, that also meant, there was virtually no waste removal service. They had only started building concrete roads to the villages. Hence, you saw a lot of "illegal" rubbish dumps like this:Diesmal fuhr ich nur in die Hügel direkt hinter der Uni.

Beside the overt showing off of environmental awareness, most Chinese don't really care about the environment. Luckily, China is big & in between the garbage dumps, there is still quite some nature. But, well, even if there is no village really near, suddenly you stumble across something like this:Abgesehen von öffentlichen Bekundungen des Umweltbewußtseins kümmern sich die meisten Chinesen nicht weiter um die Umwelt.

Which is probably some kind of water reservoir. But I didn't check. I was more interested in this small creep I found there:Was vermutlich so eine Art Wasserreservoir ist.

& the hills on the other side:& für die Hügel auf der anderen Seite:

One annoying thing in China's countryside are the many paths simply stopping in the Nirwana. It's good for the environment if no people go there, but to someone cycling around it can be a bit bothersome if you go uphill for a while & the path gets narrower & narrower & then stops completely:Eine eher nervige Seite von Chinas ländlichen Gegenden ist die Tatsache, daß viele Wege im Nirwana enden.

Oh, well, back to the concrete road then, while avoiding the usual bicycle traps:Nunja, dann eben zurück zur Betonstraße, während man den üblichen Radlerfallen ausweicht:

It was not really a construction site (or didn't really look like one yet). You just come out of the greenery & then there is this huge hole in the ground. Could become a bit of a nuisance, if you're cycling there in the dark.

As you can see, even though most Chinese don't really care, some can enjoy the scenery while having supper.

These are typical rural dogs in China. They all look very similar, unlike the overbred specimens you find in the cities. & unlike the soi dogs in Thailand, they are rather tame & avoid people, when possible. That's perhaps due to some Chinese liking dog meat.

That was supposed to be the first in a series of "pretty mamas", because there are a lot in China. But, me being rather anti-social & too shy to actually talk to strangers, that project never really got off the ground. It's easier to take photos of non-human animals.

Have a lot more & better images of toads & frogs. Only I don't really know yet, how to wrap them into some kind of story. Don't really like to post some individual pictures.
2 days later I encountered the water buffalo from the 1st photo. A mother & her kid were looking after it.2 Tage später kam mir dann der Wasserbüffel aus dem ersten Bild unter. Eine Mutter & ihr Kind hüteten ihn.

On that day I was out really late, so no landscape pictures. But I got a lot of toads & some other animals that evening & night. Will see how to put that into a post in the future.
