Another flashback to my time in Shaoguan. This time it's mostly about exploring an abandoned golf course. It's a bit to the north of Shaoguan University.
Wieder mal ein Rückblick auf meine Zeit in Shaoguan. Diesmal geht es hauptsächlich um die Erkundung eines verlassenen Golfplatzes. Dieser befindet sich etwas nördlich der Uni Shaoguan.
Back then, it was in the middle of nowhere. Well, in the middle of a largely agrarian landscape. Lots of small farms, still worked in rather traditional ways.
Damals lag der Platz noch mitten im Nirgendwo. Naja, inmitten von Feldern. Viele kleine Bauernhöfe, die das Land noch relativ traditionell bearbeiteten.
The farmers were obviously not totally oblivious to modern life. So, if they had to sell their hogs, they had cars available to transport them. Well, kind of ...
Die Bauern waren ganz offensichtlich nicht bar aller modernen Errungenschaften. Wenn sie also mal ihre Schweine verkaufen mußten, hatten sie Autos, um diese zu transportieren. Was man so Auto nennt:
But at least they had a very new concrete road to drive on. Beside the road, motorbikes & "cars", the countryside was probably not much different to 200 years ago, it seemed.
Aber wenigstens hatten sie eine nagelneue Betonstraße, um darauf zu fahren. Abgesehen von der Straße, Motorrädern & "Autos" hatte die Gegend sich aber in den letzten 200 Jahren vermutlich nicht übermäßig verändert, wie's schien.
That was when I reached the golf course. This young water buffalo was grazing at the edge of the course. Actually, on that day, I didn't realize that it was a golf course. I was just wondering about the strange features of the landscape.
Kurz darauf erreichte ich den Golfplatz. Dieser junge Wasserbüffel graste an dessen Rand. An diesem Tag war mir übrigens nicht klar, daß dort ein Golfplatz war. Wunderte mich nur über die seltsame Landschaft.
Large areas with overgrown lawn, small lakes & then these strange sand holes. Obviously sand traps of a golf course, but you wouldn't expect one in the middle of nowhere. It only occurred to me after I found the golf club at a later date.
Größere Stellen überwachsenen Rasens, Teiche & dann diese seltsamen Sandlöcher. Ganz offensichtlich Bunker eines Golfplatzes, aber sowas erwartet man ja nicht mitten im Nirgendwo. Mir dämmerte es jedenfalls erst, als ich auf einem späteren Trip das Clubhaus entdeckte.
On that particular day I didn't see that club home. Anyway, I'm more interested in wildlife than human occupations.
An diesem Tag sah ich es jedenfalls nicht. Bin aber sowieso mehr an der Tierwelt interessiert denn an menschlichen Freizeitbeschäftigungen.
Wildlife is interesting, but death too has its fascination. As you know, there is a lot of water in Canton. This can be a death trap, if you're a small animal:
Die Tierwelt ist natürlich auch faszinierend, wenn es um den Tod geht. Wie bekannt, gibt es in Kanton sehr viel Wasser. Dieses kann zur Todesfalle werden, besonders wenn man ein kleines Tier ist:
That probably was some kind of rodent, maybe a forest rat. But Canton is also a hot place. Which means that oxygen levels in the water can become very low. & that's a problem if you're a fish in a small pond:
Wahrscheinlich war das ein Nagetier, vielleicht eine Waldratte. Aber Kanton ist auch eine recht heiße Gegend. Das bedeutet, daß der Sauerstoffgehalt des Wassers extrem niedrig sein kann. & das ist ein Problem, wenn man ein Fisch in einem Teich ist:
& just like for the rodent, it can become a death trap for fish:
& wie für das Nagetier, kann das Wasser auch für Fische zur Todesfalle werden.
Just unlucky, I suppose. Well, back to some nicer views. Like this fly catcher (I think it is):
Nur Pech gehabt, nehme ich an. Nunja, zurück zu Angenehmerem, wie diesem Fliegenschnäpper (nehme ich an):
Or some kind of cicada in a rather unusual position (i.e. one in which I can take a photo):
Oder diese Zikade in ungewöhnlicher Position (sprich: wo ich eine Aufnahme machen kann):
Lots of ants around there, too. This one is a rather big exemplar; & curious, too:
Natürlich gibt es auch viele Ameisen. Dies war ein besonders großes Exemplar; & neugierig:
This one was curious as well. Well, who wouldn't be, with some giant sticking a big black thingy in your face?
Diese war auch neugierig. Nun, wer wäre das nicht, wenn ein Riese einem ein großes, schwarzes Ding vor's Gesicht hält?
Some other interesting insects & flowers were also around. (Gosh, I just love that countryside.)
Waren auch einige andere interessante Insekten & Pflanzen in der Gegend. (Finde diese Gegend einfach herrlich.)
& then I found another free ranging chicken flock. Didn't seem to be too concerned of me coming close:
& dann fand ich wieder mal freilaufende Hühner. Waren offenbar nicht übermäßig besorgt über meine Annäherung:
Interestingly, there was a fence, but only partial. The farmer even tried to plug some holes. But what good does it do, if the area is open on the 3 other sides?
Interessanterweise gab es dort einen Zaun, aber nur ein Stück. Der Züchter hatte sogar einige Löcher geflickt. Aber wozu soll das gut sein, wenn der Bereich auf den anderen 3 Seiten offen ist?

Did I mention lots of water in Canton? There are of course also a lot of flooded rice fields. & in these fields you can often find small fish which very much look like they could be sold as aquarium fish in Europe:
Erwähnte ich, daß es in Kanton viel Wasser gibt? Natürlich gibt aus auch viele geflutete Reisfelder. & darin findet man oft kleine Fische, die aussehen, als könnte man sie in Europa in Zooläden als Aquarienfische kaufen:
Had no polarization filter, so that's the best I could do. That should do for today. The next few Shaoguan posts will probably be about wildlife, before I return to cycling. Now just a few more pics:
