Shaoguan - Cycling in the countryside / Umgebungsradeln # 9

We're back in March 2007, after a detour to November 2006 because I had deleted the folder with the pictures of the golf club house. Much of this post was also shot in & around that golf course, because the environment there was really nice & easily available via bike.
& wir sind zurück im März 2007, nach dem kleinen Umweg über den November 2006, da ich den Ordner mit den Bildern vom Golfclub gelöscht hatte. Ein Großteil der Bilder heute wurde auch im & am Golfplatz aufgenommen, da die Umgebung dort nunmal recht nett & mit dem Rad leicht erfahrbar war.
Unlike the normal countryside, which has either roads or footpaths, the golf had some proper cart tracks. & since the golf course had been abandoned, beside the common grasshopper...
Anders als sonst gab es dort nicht nur entweder Landstraßen oder Fußpfade, sondern vernünftige Feldwege. & da der Golfplatz verlassen war, konnte man dort neben dem normalen Grashüpfer ...
... you could also find some strange ant constructions which you wouldn't see on a tended green.
auch so manche seltsame Ameisenkonstruktion finden, die man auf einem gepflegten Grün sonst eher nicht sähe.
The overgrown sandtraps provided opportunities for some not-so common plants for Canton to create an interesting mini-landscape:

The wetter environment of the ponds was obviously so stimulating that these weevils had to get at it.
Die feuchtere Umgebung der Teiche war anscheinend so stimulierend, daß diese Rüsselkäfer nicht an sich halten konnten.
Then I found this strange stuff:

Not really sure what it is, but my best guess is some kind of fungus, perhaps Orbiliaceae. Nice orange, anyway.
Nicht wirklich sicher, was es ist, aber vermutlich eine Art Schlauchpilz, vielleicht Knopfbecherchenverwandte. Hübsches Orange.
Hard to recognise? That's probably a Taipei grass frog (Hylarana taipehensis). A bit later I found one in the water, so below you can see a bit better how they look. They are very shy, though. Therefore I only got a few photos.
Schwer zu erkennen? Das ist wahrscheinlich ein Taipeh-Grasfrosch (Hylarana taipehensis, kein deutscher Wikipediaartikel). Etwas später sah ich einen solchen im Wasser, also kann man ihn unten etwas besser erkennen. Diese Art ist verdammt scheu, weshalb ich nur wenige Fotos habe.
Then I actually found proof that the golf course had actually been in use once:
Dann fand ich doch tatsächlich den Beweis, daß der Golfplatz mal in Gebrauch war:
& near that golf ball was the thing below. Can you see it?
& in der Nähe des Golfballs war dies:
Some kind of stick insect or grass hopper. Couldn't find out what exactly it is.
Eine Art Stabschrecke oder Heuschrecke. Konnte nicht herausfinden, was genau.
Still on the golf course, I found 2 water buffaloes, tending to the grass. The older one didn't care, but the calf was quite inquisitive.
Immer noch auf dem Golfplatz kamen mit diese beiden Wasserbüffel unter, die das Gras pflegten. Der ältere kümmerte sich nicht um mich, aber das Kalb war recht neugierig.
Had obviously never seen a longnose & wanted to get a closer look of this strange alien.
Hatte offenbar noch nie eine Langnase gesehen & wollte sich das Fremdwesen mal näher ansehen.
The water buffaloes didn't only tend to the grass by keeping it short. Nice as they were, they also provided some nutrition:
Die Wasserbüffel pflegten das Gras nicht nur, indem sie es kurz hielten. Nett wie sie waren, stellten sie auch ein paar Nährstoffe zur Verfügung.
Growth is not the only thing going on, though. There is also death:
Es wird dort aber nicht nur gelebt, sondern auch gestorben:
Some predator got lucky with a small rodent, but didn't eat all of it. Parts of leg & foot seem almost mummified. The teeth also look a bit strange.
Ein Raubtier hatte ein kleines Nagetier erwischt, aber nicht komplett gefressen. Teile eines Beins & Fußes waren beinahe mumifiziert. Die Zähne sehen auch etwas seltsam aus.
In the hills around the golf course was more death. I found some graves of poorer folk. Seems, the graves themselves were already quite old, but not forgotten.
In den Hügeln rund um den Golfplatz gab es noch mehr Tod. Fand einige Gräber von offenbar ärmeren Leuten. Schienen schon recht alt zu sein, wurden aber noch gepflegt.
Don't remember the significance of the white paper, but Chinese often put this usually at graves on tomb cleaning day, IIRC. At the foot of the graves were some incense sticks.
Habe vergessen, wofür das weiße Papier dient, aber Chinesen kleben es oft an Gräber während des Grabreinigungstages (Qingming). Am Fuß der Grabhügel waren einige Räuchestäbchen.
Then I was on a wildlife market again. Unlike those on the golf course, these were not happy animals, as you can see.
Dann war ich auch mal wieder auf einem Tiermarkt. Anders als die Tiere auf dem Golfplatz (mit Ausnahme des Nagetiers) waren diese eher unglücklich, wie man sieht.
Chinese love their frog stew (as do I). So you find a lot of frogs on such a market. I thought, these were bred on farms, but it's possible they were actually caught in the wild. I have photos of such wild frogs, which will be in some later post.
Chinesen essen gerne Frösche (ich auch). Deshalb findet man eine Menge Frösche auf einem solchen Markt. Dachte, diese seien auf Farmen gezüchtet, aber es kann sein, daß sie doch Wildfänge waren. Ich habe Fotos von derartigen Fröschen, die in einem zukünftigen Beitrag noch verarbeitet werden.
