Shaoguan - Dajian Temple / Dajian-Tempel

October 2019 · 6 min read
I have already written about the Dajian Temple before, but back then I thought that I had never ventured inside. To my surprise, though, I actually did. I had completely forgotten about it. Only when I reached the folder with the pictures of mid-May 2007, I noticed this. Still don't remember anything, but that's my memory for you.Über den Dajian-Tempel habe ich schon vorher geschrieben, aber damals dachte ich, daß ich niemals hineingegangen sei.

So, today we will go inside & see what it's like. But before we do, here's the outside on a photo from the above-mentioned post (I will add the other older pictures as well as an introduction to the temple at the end):Also gibt es heute einen Blick in den Tempel.

You can see that it looks rather similar to a normal apartment building from the front. The Dajian Temple (大鉴禅寺, Dà jiàn chán sì) is in the centre of Shaoguan & hence easily overlooked.

If you venture inside, you are greeted by the four heavenly kings who are guarding the temple. Above you see the king of the west, the one who sees all (广目天王, Guăng Mù Tiānwáng). In his hands are a snake or dragon & a pearl.

Beside him stands the chief of the kings, protector of the north, who hears everything (多闻天王, Duō Wén Tiānwáng). He holds an umbrella as a weapon. In his left hand is something that looks like a pidgeon, although according to Wikipedia he is associated to a mongoose.

On the other side of the entrance is the king of the east, god of music who upholds the realm (持国天王, Chí Guó Tiānwáng). He holds a pipa & is supposed to protect everyone.

Beside him is the king of the south, ruler of the winds & protector of the Dharma (增长天王, Zēng Zhǎng Tiānwáng). In his right hand he holds a sword.

Then you have to walk through a short hallway to reach the yard in front of the actual temple. Nothing particularly remarkable there, just the usual incense burners.

Inside, it gets a lot more interesting. Here's a big display with several Buddhas & an altar for offerings in front.Drinnen wird es deutlich interessanter. Unten sieht man einige Buddhas & einen Opferaltar davor.

A nice looking traditional drum stands beside the altar. It doesn't look particularly used, though:Neben dem Altar steht eine traditionelle Trommel. Sieht nicht übermäßig stark benutzt aus:

Another display. Similar statues, particularly like the monk on the right, have been shown to contain the mummies of the monks the statues represent. Don't know whether that's the case here, though.Einige weitere Statuen.

Close-up of the altar with offerings in front of the 3 Buddhas. The carvings on the wood are remarkable, though probably not very old.

Then there was this little roof figure, probably a storm-summoning fish (狎魚):Dann war da diese kleine Dachfigur, wahrscheinlich ein Sturmbringerfisch (狎魚):

& on the way back out there are 2 more guardians. These are probably 2 Benevolent Kings, although they look different to the ones I know. This is the one to the right:Auf dem Weg zurück nach draußen sieht man dann 2 weitere Wächter.

The altar in front has also very nicely detailed engravings:Der Altar davor ist auch sehr interessant verziert:

& that's it pretty much for the inside of the Dajian Temple. Below are some details about the temple from my earlier post & some more pictures from the inside as well as the ones from said post.& das war es weitgehend, was das Innere des Dajian-Tempels angeht.

From my old post:

The temple was founded as a monastery (if I understand everything correctly) in 660 AD. It is somehow linked to the Nanhua Temple which I already wrote about here &here. The 6th Patriarch of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, Huineng, is supposed to have taught here.
As with so many other historical buildings the temple was at least partly destroyed, until rebuilding efforts started in the 1930's & 40's. In 1958 it was repurposed by the commies. Only in the 1980's it was returned to its original religious purpose & after 1992 fully reconstructed.
