Shaoguan - Wet Market again / Frischmarkt wieder mal

May 2019 · 5 min read
Obviously I visited the wet market in Shaoguan more often than I remember. & it also seems like I only went there when the weather was rather bad. Found some more pictures from a visit in early 2007 & since there is quite some stuff in there I haven't posted before, it's worth to do this now.

As you can see, hygiene is not a major concern in China. The vegetables are sometimes lying directly on the ground, although in most cases the vendors put at least some kind of tarpaulin underneath.

Dried & cured food is very popular in China. Some of it can be found anywhere in the world, like cured bacon. Some of it is rather peculiar. Hanging in the foreground above are dried ducks.Getrocknetes & Geräuchertes ist in China sehr beliebt. Manches davon findet man weltweit, wie Räucherspeck. Manches ist aber eher speziell. Oben im Vordergrund hängen z.B. getrocknete Enten.

Also very popular in China are tortoises & turtles. Usually they are bought to prepare soup, I think. Don't remember having tried any. Maybe it was too expensive. What I tried, though, was snake.

Not my favourite Chinese food. I particularly dislike, that you have to fight the backbone to get a little meat. I liked dog meat much better. Especially dog soup can be very nice. Although, you have to be careful. Some restaurants seem to use beef, even though they advertise dog soup. Man muß jedoch etwas aufpassen.

As is obvious from the above, dog is not that special, being sold in the same shop as goat & donkey. (You can see a donkey head hanging in the background.) It's fairly expensive, though, just like donkey & goat.

At least in Canton, almost every wet market has also a section specialised in sea food. Cantonese eat pretty much anything that comes out of the water, be it fish, crab, squid or shellfish.

It doesn't actually matter whether the stuff comes from the sea, or not. Any water dweller is OK. Below you can see some swamp eels. These you can find not only in Canton, but all over China. Unten sieht man einige Kiemenschlitzaale.

Also popular all over China (& with me) are frogs. Frog stew is one of my favourite Chinese dishes. You can find it everywhere in many varieties. The frogs are often bred on farms, but at least in Shaoguan, I think, they are mostly caught in the wild. Findet man überall in diversen Rezepturen.

Coming back to snakes, one of the peculiarities of the (usually male) Chinese is their liking for snake wine (蛇酒,shéjiǔ):Kommen wir nochmal zu Schlangen.

I suppose, it's rather brandy than wine, but I never drank it, so don't really know. In China, they drink it not (only) for it's taste, but because the snakes are supposed to possess some healthy or even medicinal qualities.

No matter the weather, a visit to a Cantonese wet market is always interesting. I can only recommend it (unless you are an animal welfare activist).Egal, welches Wetter, ein kantonesischer Markt ist immer einen Besuch wert.
