CHARITY WHILE CRUISING OR TRAVELLING because its not only bling-bling in our world #CHARITY

November 2019 · 8 min read · Italy

This is my personal story about travelling and doing charity at the same time, its a small and kind gesture that most of us can afford to do, to help another human in the world, cause together we can make a difference!

MSC is not only a cruise and freight container company, its also a human interest company which supports alot of charities. The biggest is UNICEF when you book with the companies aligned to MSC they ask you for 1 euro per person per booking of a flight, trip or cruise. Only 1 euro, thats so clever.

MSC works together and supportes UNICEF, because together you can make a difference. When we booked our trip across the Mediterranean we automatically became sponsor of UNICEF. For us who have it good in the world a small gesture. The first MSC FOR UNICEF initiative succeeded in raising a staggering 10 million and that in 8 years. So one million a year all due to generosity from the travelling customers from MSC.

MSC is a partner of UNICEF on many projects, which contribute to children , being a mum that is my soft spot. They help the production and transport of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods that was the first thing i read about. But UNICEF does more, here are some projects. ( there are more projects if you are interested go to Unicef.com ) i found this from the chairman in the MSC brochure Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises ’Executive Chairman said:“ We are pleased with the milestone we have achieved in this contribution, entirely due to the generosity of our guests. As a family business, we ensure the well-being of families around the world through the established fund on board our ships. With the "Get on Board for Children" project, life-saving facilities have been provided such as food for severely malnourished children around the world, where and when it was most needed. We thank you for cooperating “

The projects:

RE-DRESSING THE BALANCE IN BRASIL

Despite its wealth of resources, many of Brasil’s Children live in crime ridden slums. There are high mortality rates, lacking support systems and their is limited education on nutrition and life in general. That way the young, who are our future are particularly vulnerable. Brasil’s urban centres platform seeks to change this by providing the children a safe environment, education, healthcare, training and sport facilities. It’s a success and the results are there already but not fast enough.

FIGHT AGAINST MALARIA IN AFRICA

We all know them the mosquitos, when they bite we have a red dot and an itch but thats that, but when it gives malaria its a whole different ball game. It can mean dead!! Malaria remains a major cause of child mortality world wide. There are solutions available but all cost money. And that is not there. The solutions are sleeping nets with insecticide treatment, diagnostic testing and medication. But getting those solutions to the most needy is a big job. The job UNICEF is doing cut the rate back with 25 procent since 2000 but thats not enough, we need to increase that number fast. And the contribution by MSC and all its travellers is helping a huge amount.

END CHILD NUTRITION

Certain regions in the world are under deadly attack of male nutrition. Every year 1,5 million parents loose a child cause of malnutrition. That’s why UNICEF came up with plumpy-nut its a ready to use therapeutic food that is peanut based. That together with therapeutic milk is available for kids in need.

MSC already helped feeding 81000 kids between 2013 - 2017 across Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and Malawi. That all due to the generosity of guests. Again when you see it on your voucher its weird the first time but when you have it good you need to spread the good.

The RUTF solution is a ready to use food supply which container a nutritious blend of peanuts, milk powder, vitamines, minerals and sugar. This is a inexpensive tool to use against children malnutrition. Every 1 euro buys about three sachets of RUTF, and busy a malnutricious kid the meals needed a day.

PLASTIC WASTE TO SCHOOLS this year and 2021

MSC is partnering an innovative multi-pronged UNICEF programme in Ivory Coast that combines environmental conservation, poverty reduction, women empowerment and children’s education. Currently, only 5% of plastic waste in Ivory Coast is recycled and the waste collectors — mainly women — are trapped in a cycle of poverty. They often have to take their children to the waste tips where they work, since 87% of children aged 3 to 5 can't go to school because there aren't enough classrooms, denying them the opportunity to build essential skills for life. The "Plastic waste to schools" programme pays the waste collectors a fair price regularly, lifting them out of poverty while recycling the plastic waste to make innovative building bricks for the low-cost construction of much-needed classrooms. It’s in Ivory Coast, a program to foster a women-empowering recycling market that recycles plastic waste into safe and durable low-cost building materials, starting with new classrooms. The strategy is to build classrooms while empowering women and cleaning up the environment. The goal is to have it ready before 2020 and raise USD 3.75 million to clean up the environment and take 66 women out of poverty per year, recycling 880,000 kg of plastic waste into innovative building bricks to build 152 low-cost, modern, community-built classrooms, enabling 8,360 more children to go to school.

On all the cruises there is the possibility to donate. There even is an official song. MSC Cruises and UNICEF have launched a song with a children's choir from Italy. The song: I Can Believe is a soundtrack especially made for all efforts from MSC aboard the MSC cruise ships. The song is played during the MSC for UNICEF children's parade aboard every MSC Cruises ship. This creates awareness for the great cause UNICEF. Its not long and with the welcome cocktail in my hand, a magical beginning of the cruise. The boys loved that and this is DOREMI the mascotte of MSC CRUISES. They even both have a doremi to sleep with. And C has a captain Jack, the captain of msc SEAVIEW in his white suit with golden stripes.

Offcourse we had a great trip, but we also try to teach our children that not all is bling bling in our world, and that helping by giving is something that is a must. We live in a place where there is no malaria, where there is not the hunger that African children have, so this way we contribute a little to give children at the other side of the globe some relief. Alone we cannot change but together we can make a difference. And i am grateful to have spent such a great 8 days on board such a beautiful ship and see so many great things. Sometimes you need to take in that the life we have is good and that others might not have it as good as we do.
