Zugspitze Glacier in Austria

Zugspitze Glacier in Austria

July 2023 · 7 min read · Tyrol

Today we went to the highest top of the mountain in this area. For those of you that dont follow me, I am currently travelling with my family and we are in Austria. The zugspitze is an glacier nearby. On a mountain both in Germany and in Austria. We had a drive of 5 minutes through the village of Lermoos to get there as we are staying in Ehrwald. The Zugspitze is a part of the Wetterstein massive mountain part and thats where the village we are staying is in also. Its half in the German and half in the Austrian part of Tirol. Normally we go here when we go skiing, but now we wanted to see what its like in summer. Its GORGEOUS !! The mountain is reachable by 2 cable cars and by the mountain train. We had originally planned take the mountain train to but the ride didn’t go because of a technical problem. We went up the top with the cable car with 100 persons a ride. The ride is 10 minutes. The price is EURO 51,00 up and down. Much but this is a must do experience if you ask me and you can stay all day , the latest ride is at 17.00 o’clock going down, so that is a plus. Time is yours. The weather was perfect , up a bit windy but thats fine. I do have to say with two family members with a freight of heights that was a thing to start with. But we made it to the second stop and the highest we been to is peak at 2950 meters.

This is at the beginning when we go onthe cable car for the ride up in 10 minutes to the height of 2950 meters.

The view is spectacular and the amount of trees and the green of the nature as a whole and the blue of the amazing clouds is breath taking. Again the ride up was with a few hickups for two lovelies ( hubby and son ) that was rough but when we arrived, and they could sit down for a few minutes, all was good. This is the renovated cable car, but this is a place where since 1820 people have been climbing. The cable car was established in 1926 and renovated in 1964, 1991 and in 2003. I know this because we visited the zugspitze museum. Its located at the entrance at the cash register , I will show that later in the blog. But all the information was available there for me to get this blog done.

The ride is 10 minutes, but the way up is about 4000 meters along the mountain, above the trees. You scan see the mountains from Germany and Switserland. The maximum speed is a is about 36 kilometres per hour. I had my phone, a camera and a go-pro and I made so many pictures. I also made a few videos so maybe there will be a dtube blog aswell. I will make a selection first. This blog i choose to use the collages to illustrate the beautiful day we had. I found the air to be somewhat tirering for me but also for the kids. The sun also did his work, so by three oclock  ( we arrived at 9.55 am )  we were beat. We decided to go down with the cable car and visit the museum.

This is the Zugspitse Gipfelkreuz, the first summit cross dated back to before wold war two, it even was blown up and relocated to the east peak. But from the safe terrace we could watch all the dare devils go up for a photo opportunity, while we were thinking what the hell atre you all doing! But the golden cross is beautiful and with the sun just above again I was in ahhhww.

What a view!!
What a view!!

We were in a bit of snow and even went off the hill on a slede. Because its summer there wasn’t enough snow but even with a little snow the fun was enormous. Now the rocks were also an opportunity to make @wesphilbin a #thoughtfuldailypost tower as we did in Italy, Bonaire and Holland in previous holidays. The kids know he would love it so why not just do it and make it a thoughtfuldailymountain here in Germany/Austria ? We also visited the chapel on the hill to say a little prayer. What a day……

The chapel was a small sweet place built on the top, I could not pass to pray there like we always do.

Above the pictures I made in the museum at the start of the cable car. Its called the Bahnorama anno 1926. Where you see the technical view of the cable car and the history. You can even try and let it run. It still works and the round wheels cling together and make the gear run like it was still being used.

The fact we got to spend the day closer to the sun was a dream. The mountain is massive and robuust, you feel small and are in ahwww 360 degrees around you. I made 320 pictures and 13 videos. This is a must see, and even when you are passing through Germany or Austria to your final destination in the summer why not book a bed and breakfast and go see this beauty. Even when you are a bit anxious about heights. The fact that the cable car has never had a problem is a reason to try. We ate at the panorama restaurant and sat outside. I did recommend wearing a long trousers and bringing a sweater. We needed it in the morning. Also take a camera, phone and video aquipment, you will regret it if you you don’t. I made one mistake because it was to crowded and the souvenir shops is at the bridge point above the ravine. I wanted a souvenir bought on top, but the fam bam was to scared so I didn’t buy it. When i finally came downstairs I regretted that. Oh well maybe we will do this again one day on our way to Italy.

All pictures are mine made with go pro 11, phone and canon camera with lens.
