No tourists in Hungary - Pictures from an empty Szentendre

April 2020 · 2 min read · Central Hungary

Szentendre is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary, after Budapest. The city is located just outside the borders of Budapest, and it is a pearl taking you back in time and giving you a totally different experience and atmosphere than Budapest and other large cities in Hungary.

Due to the coronavirus, no tourists are coming to Hungary at all these days. In fact, only Hungarians and people with a valid work permit in Hungary are allowed to enter the country. As a result, there are no tourists at all in the country, and an extreme number of people are suffering because of this.

People are still allowed to be outside, either as they go to work, to the grocery store, or as they go for a walk in the fresh air. But, if they just go for a walk, they need to keep a 1,5m distance to others outside. One would think that many people took advantage of this chance to be outside, but to my surprise, I was able to walk with my family in the totally empty streets in Szentendre this Saturday. Of course, almost everyone actually out walking was down by the Danube enjoying the sun and the river. But, the streets of Szentendre were almost empty. Just check these pictures!

Above you can see pictures from the main street in Szentendre, the Bogdanyi street. It is normally packed with tourists, but now it is almost empty, even on a Saturday afternoon.

You can also see that people are still taking care of the city and its beauty, just take a look at the beautiful flowers in the window of a closed restaurant.

Szentendre is not the only empty city. Recently, I visited popular tourist attractions in Budapest as well, and once again, they were mostly empty all of them.

And, just like people have said that they can finally see the fish swimming around in the canals of Venice, the water in the Danube is actually looking nicer and shining better due to the lack of traffic on the river.

It might be nice to have the main street of Szentendre to yourself. But, I do hope it will all come to an end as quickly as possible, and that tourists will once again return to Hungary, and that the misery of the coronavirus will leave the earth!
