Lake Merritt is a large lake, located in the heart of the city of Oakland, California.  It is a tidal estuary, fed from the San Francisco Bay.  It is historically significant as the United States' first official wildlife refuge, designated in 1870.

The lake has become a popular recreational space for Oakland residents and visitors alike.  It's surrounded by sites of historical interest, parks, attractions, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Some of the most significant places around Lake Merritt include:

Children's Fairyland, a theme park featuring storybook sets, gentle rides, friendly animals, and live entertainment. The Fairyland was opened in 1950. Walt Disney visited the theme park shortly after it opened.  It was one of the inspirations for Disneyland, which opened in 1956.

Oakland Chinatown, an ethnic center and enclave, is located just Northwest of the lake, was built by Chinese immigrants in the 1850s. Chinatown grew quickly following the San Francisco earthquake, when many Chinese people fled the earthquake-ravaged city of San Francisco.

Jack London Square is a popular entertainment district.  It is located just West of the lake along the estuary.  It is home to Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon, which opened in 1884 and was a favorite hangout of author Jack London.

1200 Lakeshore is a mid-century modern apartment building on the South shore of Lake Merritt. It is notable for its architecture, its rooftop gardens, and its many famous residents, which have included NBA All-Star Stephen "Steph" Curry, NBA champion and coach Stephen Kerr, actress Candice Bergen, and political activist Huey Newton, founder of the Black Panther party.

The Lake Merritt Gardens, made up of 11 “themed” gardens on 7 acres. The most popular garden is the Bonsai garden, one of the best known in the United States.
