the columns of San Lorenzo in Milan

March 2022 · 2 min read · Italy

I often happen to be in Milan for work reasons and many times I passed in front of these columns but I did not know its history the other day I found a table where he explains that these columns are the last testimony of the ancient Mediolanum.

Practically these columns are located in front of the basilica of San Lorenzo are 16 in all and date back to medieval times When they were built using old materials most likely from Roman buildings.

They magically survived the looting and many demolitions that took place over time and came out unscathed from the bombings of the Second World War on the city of Milan.

Its origin however remains a mystery because no one has discovered the origin of the columns there are only some hypotheses for example the fact that it could be the monumental entrance to the basilica, or that the columns could come from the nearby amphitheater, or belong to a non specified temple dedicated to Cybele.

The fact is that this place has become very important for the Milanese who come to have an evening aperitif and therefore I recommend anyone who comes to visit Milan to come by to pay a visit.

Also because near this wonder there are many really nice restaurants and bars that I myself was able to try and I was really satisfied.

as usual I thank you for reading the article and I hope that my information will be useful to you to plan a future visit to the city of Milan but I will certainly bring other articles about Milan as I am often there for work.
