If you are in Lisbon and more precisely in the Belém district, you must visit the Mosteiro do Jerónimos.
There is a legend behind this monastery, it is thought that it was built on the remains of a small church in which Vasco da Gama took refuge to pray before leaving for the Indies, in fact in the Igreja Santa Maria de Belém, church located inside the tomb of the great navigator resides in the monastery.
This imposing building is a classic example of the Manueline style, work began in the early 1500s and took about a hundred years to complete it.
From fairy tale it is an appropriate term to describe it, once inhabited by monks then it became a school and an orphanage and now, become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can visit it.

Se vi trovate a Lisbona e più precisamente nel quartiere di Belém, dovete per forza andare a visitare il Mosteiro do Jerónimos.
C’è una leggenda dietro questo monastero, si pensa che venne eretto sui resti di una piccola chiesetta in cui si rifugiò Vasco da Gama per pregare prima di partire alla volta delle Indie, infatti nella Igreja Santa Maria de Belém, chiesa situata all’interno del monastero, risiede la tomba del grande navigatore.
Questa imponente costruzione è un classico esempio di stile manuelino, i lavori cominciarono all’inizio del 1500 e per completarlo ci vollero circa cento anni.
Da fiaba è un termine appropriato per descriverlo, una volta abitato da monaci poi diventò una scuola ed un orfanotrofio ed ora, diventato Patrimonio dell’Umanità dell’Unesco, è possibile visitarlo.

Once you have purchased the ticket, you can proceed to visit the interior where you are immediately greeted by the cloister, built in golden stone and the columns decorated with leaves and creepers, all very well preserved.
The cloister has a quadrangular structure and various sculptures scattered a bit everywhere.
The internal garden and the various terraces from which you can look make the idea of ​​the majesty of this monastery.

Già dall’esterno si può notare la maestosità e lo sfarzo, i portali a dir poco sontuosi lasciano senza parole.
Una volta acquistato il biglietto si può procedere per visitare l’interno in cui si viene subito accolti dal chiostro, costruito in pietra dorata e le colonne decorate con foglie e rampicanti, tutto egregiamente conservato.
Il chiostro ha una struttura quadrangolare e varie sculture disseminate un po’ ovunque.
Il giardino interno e i vari terrazzi da cui ci si può affacciare rendono l’idea della maestosità di questo monastero.

Igreja Santa Maria de Belém has been restored with a Renaissance style, you can see the columns that look like trunks rising towards the ceiling.
From the terrace of the upper choir you can enjoy a superb view of the interior, the carvings and the windows make everything impressive.

Dal terrazzo del coro superiore si può godere di una superba vista dell’interno, gli intagli e le vetrate rendono tutto impressionante.
