Exploring The Habitat In Search For Morel Mushrooms

March 2019 · 3 min read · Brest pod Učkom

Hello #Steemians & #mushroom #hunters!

Last spring was first time I started to study morels & I must admit that these mushrooms are quite rare here in the North - West of Croatia & I also realized that we do not have large forests of elm & ash trees but this didn't kill my will to locate the habitats so I have already started exploring.

I found out that we have 2 traditional #morel festivals going on every year - one is in Skrad & one is in Umag - so I logically concluded that somewhere near these #festival locations must be also the morels' habitats located! Still I haven't explored those areas yet but surely I intend to!

There are some more conclusions I made while studying: There are 2 villages in the North - East of Istria which are called with a same word as the elm trees - one is called - Brest & the other - Brest pod Učkom.

In Croatian the name for the elm tree is - "brijest" - can you see the connection?!

So I was asking myself why do those villages have the same name as the trees do?! But I couldn't find the answer except of going there & seeing for myself! Last Sunday I went to Brest pod Učkom & really I did find some elm trees growing & blossoming there! 😃 I also spoke with some locals about the morels & I got a confirmation that they do grow there but not in large quantities.

Except the elms blossoming, I found a lot of cornel bushes doing the same & here's the most beautiful one I saw:

& the village itself is very beautiful too! All the houses are built in the #traditional stone technique & I'm sorry now for not taking more #photos of the place...

Učka is the #mountain above the place & people there mostly live out of what the mountain gives + the tourism in the recent years cause the huge parts of the mountain are protected by the law under the level of a #natural park. Učka is on the North - East & towards the South - East there's a vertical cliff where's the incredible sight over the Boljun field can be enjoyed:

Police very rarely comes here so I've noticed a large number of unregistered cars which the locals use for the dirt roads in the mountain. This WV Golf I found totally amazing:

Funny how the cornel flowers & Golf are of the same #colors & how this yellow goes well with the blue of my jacket! There is no coincidence but surely I didn't plan to meet so much of yellow... 😂

That time I didn't reach the other Brest village but I definitely plan to, in the following days & I'll try to make more photos.

I found no morels that time cause it was too cold & too early for them to start growing bur I'm not giving up & my exploration got some results indeed! I'm satisfied!

Till the next time...
