The statue of Decebal, the largest stone sculpture in Romania

June 2018 · 4 min read · Romania

In the beautiful place where the Carpathian Mountains meet with the Danube, nature thought to form a wonderful place called La Cazane.
It is a spectacular place where the road that takes us there has its own beauty, this road that introduces us to this journey is bordered by the rapid waters of the Danube that narrows between the high stone walls and its strong currents give you the feeling that the water is boiling and on the other side are some very steep hills.
On this road we meet Decebal's face, carved in the rock in the Danube Clisura, Decebal being the last king of the Dacians. This sculpture was made by the wish of businessman Iosif Constantin Dragan, who wanted to leave a great and beautiful memory of our ancestors.
This sculpture is on the list of the 5 most spectacular statues in the world, with a height of 55 meters high and 25 meters wide being only 6 meters smaller than the Statue of Liberty in New York.

The construction of this statue began in 1994, this place requiring a complete deforestation of the trees on this rock, with the help of the boats all the equipment necessary for this work was brought.
The work on this sculpting in the rock lasted for 10 years, and for its realization, 12 architects worked on this project.
Under Decebal's head there was a Latin inscription in the rock: "DECEBALUS REX - DRAGAN FECIT" ("Decebal King - made by Dragan"). https://ro.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipul_lui_Decebal

This is where our journey begins, after telling you something about this statue
let's get to my story.
I took the tent, made some shopping and left to spend a night on the Danube. There were already a few friends waiting for us with the fishing sticks already launched and the grill ready.

When the tent was over, Orlando, my boy jumped directly to fishing, he caught something too, being a bit disappointed that his fish is a little bit small. But the smile quickly returned to his face when the boys took a bigger catch.

With his own hands, after suffering a little more, this was the result, a fish ... But well that other fishes followed, otherwise I remained with the image of his sad face of disappointment because of the size of this fish.

But besides the beautiful atmosphere and the wonderful view we can meet here many other beautiful places, for example a simple boat ride can turn into a real adventure.
image

If you do not have a boat ,or you simply do not want to venture alone in these places there are special boat trips for tourists. The price of this boat ride is about 7 € per person and takes about 2 hours and includes visiting the Big Boilers, Small Boilerd,Ponicova Cave, Veterans Grotto and well understood Decebal's Face. During this boat trip you can listen to the stunning stories of these places, told by the captain of the mini ship.

image

You can also hike, climb up the high cliffs through which the Danube passes, to admire something really spectacular. And in these hiking you can choose to venture alone, but it is safer to choose a guide.
There is a lot to see, and one day does not fit all of this turistic points .Sure next time we will opt for a longer vacation here. And if the tent was a choice made by us to spend a night, for several days sure we choose one of the hostels in the area, which besides accommodation provide us with pontoons for water sports and fishing boats for fishing or cruise, and for those who want a bit of adrenaline in addition you can rent pleasure boats, bananas, equipment for nautical sky. Or you can rent a bicycle for a relaxing walk around the area.
And how can end most beautiful a evening on the Danube, if not in the atmosphere of a camp fire in the silence of the forest and clean air.

And now good night, we're in the tent and we're getting ready for sleep.

The next day we were ready to leave, a last stop before we went home was the beautiful sculpture, where a few cars were stopped. We admired her after we continued our journey back home.
