Berlin Castel / Humboldtforum

July 2022 · 2 min read · Berlin

Historical images of revolutionary events show that the place on which the Berlin Castel e.g. the Humboldtforum now stands for not so long has been a center of expression of political power for many centuries and thus often became the target of protests and attempts to bring about radical change. In March 1848, citizens around the Berlin Palace, which stood here at the time, fought for a constitution and national unity. After the end of the monarchy in November 1918, the palace became the scene of violent clashes over the new political direction. In the fall of 1989, while the GDR leadership celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the state in the "Palace of the Republic" that stood here at the time, demonstrators outside demanded freedom and reform. There are probably few places as strongly associated with a wide variety of historical events in German history as this one.
