Access to the castle was guaranteed exclusively by a wooden bridge in the past while a deep moat around it made the structure inaccessible and impregnable from the outside.

The castle has lived through three different periods and works of architectural revision: from the elegant court of Frederick II to the military structure of the 16th century AD and finally it became a real prison in the 18th century. Only later was it consecrated as an art monument and works of restoration and redevelopment of entire areas of the castle are still in progress.

The courtyard is the large central space of the castle, completely open, and here in the age of Frederick II, celebrations, celebrations and even duels between weapon masters were frequent, all under the attentive gaze of the lord of the castle , which he often observed from the windows or balconies of the upper floor. Inside the rooms the signs of the different periods are evident: it is possible to notice how ornamental columns were covered by walls of the following centuries and today brought to light in all their splendor and might.

In all the halls of the castle, also thanks to the wind of this day, you can breathe a certain air of tension, as if the tourist was carefully scrutinized by the gentlemen who lived and defended the structure over the centuries. The rooms are very large but abundantly illuminated by large windows that overlook both the courtyard and the sea outside.

The castle was entirely built in the white stone of Trani. There are no paintings or mosaics on the walls, probably some works were destroyed in the later periods of Frederick II. Today the castle is an example of an elegant military structure and here in Puglia there are many castles built under the dominion of Frederick II. Some are open to the public, others private and others unfortunately no longer accessible.
