Tour de Slovenia - Soča river & Šunik water grove - 39 photos

June 2020 · 6 min read · Slovenia

Dear Hivean friends,

Wow, what to say after that amazing feedback I received at my last Tour de Slovenia photo story where I shared Mountain Pass Vršič and can be seen on this link.

I have to admit I didn’t expect a big boom for recent photo story, but here on Hive you never know as it is full of surprises… Positive surprises! It started with quick upvote from @theycallmedan which kind of announced something good. It continued than with one of my most ardent followers @phortun, who is also an individual curator and supported my work with @TipU upvote. From bigger upvotes at the beginning I have to mention also @czechglobalhosts which was result of my win at Asian Sunday contest. There was also couple of my regular followers recognised quality at my post and give me an upvote for what I am grateful. Few calm hours were followed by my biggest accomplishment here on Hive so far. Upvote from @blocktrades and later huge upvote from @darthknight. Come on that is real honour to be recognized by 3 top 10 members of Hive. It is a privilege, but also a commitment to hard work in the future as well.

After that I came quite high on trending page of all posts and support came from all over the place. Felling was really great, as I always want to create content to reach as many people as possible. I want to promote my photography, my home country, my travel advice, everything I create. This is my main goal here on Hive and I get huge boost now with such a success of my recent post.

I am aware that not every post will be accepted like that one, but I will do my best to share quality with you.

Huge thank you for every single one of you who read and watch my work.

After “thank you” intro, it is time to start with real reason why I am publishing new work and this is to show more beauty my country Slovenia has to offer.

This story kind of continue from last one as we went over Vršič Mountain Pass to get to Soča river, which will be the queen of this post together with amazing place I discovered on that trip – Šunikov vodni gaj (ENG: The Šunik water grove).

As already written on my blog Soča is the nicest river I know. It is something mysterious in it with turquoise colour in most parts. We, Slovenians, get to know Soča river early in the school as we have to learn poet named Soči, written by Simon Gregorčič.

So at least the start of this poem is known by almost every Slovenian for all his life, similar to National Anthem.

My fellow Slovenians will start to recite:

Krasna si, bistra hči planin,

Brdka v prirodni si lepoti,

ko ti prozornih globočin

nevihte temne srd ne moti –

krasna si, hči planin!

.

.

.

I don’t know English translation and as I see this poem as a pride of Slovenian poetry, it is OK to stay in Slovene language :)

I just wanted to bring this river and our (maybe mine?) look on it closer to you and help you understand what else can I see in it despite natural beauty it definitely offers.

So after we came across Vršič there is immediately spring of Soča river. This was my first visit of the spring. You have two options, first is to go to viewpoint only and the second one is to go all the way to the place where water is coming out.

Second option is unfortunately highly demanding and as we were there with our little one, we didn’t take a risk and go to viewpoint only. It is nothing special, but as I really like water and everything connected with it, I enjoyed about 15 minutes long hike.

Now we were already at Trenta valley, which was on the best photos from Vršič in my recent post. Valley from above looks spectacular and from down there it is not much behind that.

You can see many mountain peaks of Slovenian Alps and all this area actually already belongs to Triglavski Narodni Park. Along the road runs river Soča, so you have numerus potential stop points and photography opportunities. This day I didn’t had so much time, so I stopped only two time for a short click. After about an hour drive you get to The Great Soča Gorge which is amazing to see as everything else connected with this river. First impression there is the best. You can walk along the gorge for about a kilometre, but path is not the best and it is not exactly clearly marked. Still worth walking a bit along the water and checking for the fishes.

Lighting that day was not the best for photography, but at least we didn’t have to worry about sunburns :)

The last think we did that day, before our toddler fell asleep in the car was Šunik water grove, for which I never heard before doing research of what to see in the area we will visit. After reading few articles I knew this attraction is made for me. It is located in the valley called Lepena also close by. There is a round trail of about half an hour walk, without serious ascent. Firstly, you walk along the river, but this time it is not Soča, but it is Lepenjica. After crossing the bridge, you come to the forestry area with a lot of greenery and water running everywhere. We didn’t meet any other person on whole trail, just birds were singing so it was really relaxing.

My big wish is also to swim in some natural pool in the middle of nowhere surrounded with great nature and it seems that Šunik water grove is just the perfect place, but water activities are forbidden. Why must there always be a but :) We have to obey the rules as if everyone would be swimming there whole beauty would be lost.

You will see on the photos below of what beauty I am talking about, but you should know that in person looks even better...
